Book Synopsis Computer-assisted Instruction by : Esther R. Steinberg
Download or read book Computer-assisted Instruction written by Esther R. Steinberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1991 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a theoretical framework and background for designing computer-assisted instruction (CAI). Its goal is to synthesize theoretical and applied research in CAI-relevant fields including theories of learning and instruction, systems for instructional design, and experience with CAI. Building on this knowledge, the book shows how computer technology interacts with instruction to influence the design of effective lessons. Designers, practitioners, and students of CAI and computer-based training (CBT) should find this text very helpful in developing a better understanding of the potential and limitations of computers as tutors.
Book Synopsis Computers As Cognitive Tools by : Susanne P. Lajoie
Download or read book Computers As Cognitive Tools written by Susanne P. Lajoie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting and illustrating several important and interesting theoretical trends that have emerged in the continuing development of instructional technology, this book's organizational framework is based on the notion of two opposing camps. One evolves out of the intelligent tutoring movement, which employs artificial-intelligence technologies in the service of student modeling and precision diagnosis, and the other emerges from a constructivist/developmental perspective that promotes exploration and social interaction, but tends to reject the methods and goals of the student modelers. While the notion of opposing camps tends to create an artificial rift between groups of researchers, it represents a conceptual distinction that is inherently more interesting and informative than the relatively meaningless divide often drawn between "intelligent" and "unintelligent" instructional systems. An evident trend is that researchers in both "camps" view their computer learning environments as "cognitive tools" that can enhance learning, performance, and understanding. Cognitive tools are objects provided by the instructional environment that allow students to incorporate new auxiliary methods or symbols into their social problem solving which otherwise would be unavailable. A final section of the book represents researchers who are assimilating and accommodating the wisdom and creativity of their neighbors from both camps, perhaps forming the look of technology for the future. When the idea of model tracing in a computer-based environment is combined with appreciation for creative mind-extension cognitive tools and for how a community of learners can facilitate learning, a camp is created where AI technologists and social constructivist learning theorists can feel equally at home.

Book Synopsis Preparing Teachers to Teach with Technology by : Charalambos Vrasidas
Download or read book Preparing Teachers to Teach with Technology written by Charalambos Vrasidas and published by IAP. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher preparation programs in the United States and around the world have finally begun to address this deficiency in their programs. The realization that technology is a powerful driving force in education coupled with a renewed emphasis on teacher preparation by governments have resulted in some dramatic changes in teacher preparation programs. I believe that we have just begun to see changes in teacher preparation and that the pace of change will continue to accelerate. This volume covers some of the more exciting developments in the field, including the emergence of wireless computing in the classroom and the preparation of teachers in an online environment. In short, I am optimistic. For those of you who are also in the field, I think you will agree. For those who are just entering the field, this book is a great place to start as you change education. Finally, while this book is the last book of the three part series that we at CAIT conceptualized with Charalambos Vrasidas and Gene Glass, it is also the beginning of a new relationship. We are excited to join with a new partner, CARDET, to present this book. Over many years in the education and R&D field, I have come to realize the value of partnerships and relationships. I want to thank both Charalambos and Gene for making this series a reality and such a success. We are looking forward to working with them and CARDET in the near future.
Book Synopsis Learning From Media 2nd Ed. by : Richard E. Clark
Download or read book Learning From Media 2nd Ed. written by Richard E. Clark and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Clark’s observation that “…media are mere vehicles that deliver instruction but do not influence student achievement any more than the truck that delivers our groceries causes changes in our nutrition” is as misunderstood today as it was when first published in the Review of Educational Research in 1983. The convincing if little read scientific evidence presented by Clark has divided the field and caused considerable concern, especially among the providers of newer media for learning. A collection of writings about the “media effects debate,” as it has come to be called, was published in 2001. Edited by Clark, Learning From Media was the first volume in the series “Perspectives in Instructional Technology and Distance Education.” The series editors are convinced that the writings of Clark and those who take issue with his position are of critical importance to the field of instructional technology, Thus, a revised, second edition of Learning From Media is now being offered. The debate about the impact of media on learning remains a fundamental issue as new mediated approaches to teaching and learning are developed, and Clark’s work should be at the center of the discussion. The critical articles on both sides of this debate are contained in Learning From Media, 2nd Edition.

Book Synopsis The Impact of Computer-assisted Instruction on Ninth- and Tenth-grade Students by : Melanie May McNeely
Download or read book The Impact of Computer-assisted Instruction on Ninth- and Tenth-grade Students written by Melanie May McNeely and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 60 years of education reform, including the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) in 1958, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975, and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2002, the achievement gap still existed at the beginning of the 21st century, and the effectiveness of the U.S. public school system continued to be questioned. This study was conducted to examine the effect of the use of a computer-assisted instruction curriculum, Achieve 3000®, among select secondary reading students in a central Florida school district and their implications for student achievement. This study showed significant difference existed in the type of students rather than the reading program. The ANCOVA performed on all students and the ANOVAs performed for exceptional education students, males and females, free/reduced lunch and ethnic subgroups did not show a significant statistical difference in the 2012-2013 reading achievement scores. The Achieve 3000® reading program did not close the achievement gap any more than the non-Achieve 3000® reading program. Conversely, the ANOVA performed for English language learners did show a significant statistical difference between the 2012-2013 reading achievement scores. However, the effect size each question was small indicating the practical implication was also small. Ultimately, this study made a strong argument for the need for further research.
