Book excerpt: An investigation was performed to study the effects of slip character and crack closure on the propagation of small fatigue cracks in titanium- aluminum alloys. The materials examined were solution-treated Ti-4Al and Ti-8Al, as well as aged Ti-8Al. The propagation of naturally initiated surface cracks of depths as small as 25 micrometers was compared with the behavior of large through-thickness cracks. An extensometer was used to monitor crack closure throughout the large crack tests, and the closure behavior of the small cracks was measured using a computerized laser interferometric displacement gage having a displacement resolution of 0.01 micrometer. The measurements of crack closure were used to compute an effective stress intensity factor range. In all three alloys and for all test conditions, which included a range of stress levels and stress ratios, small cracks propagated faster than large cracks subjected to an equivalent Delta K, and the small cracks propagated under conditions that were significantly below the large-crack threshold, Delta K(th). Although the character and distribution of slip in Ti-Al alloys may have a dramatic influence on fatigue crack initiation and on the propagation of large cracks, this effect was minimal for small cracks.

Book excerpt: A series of fracture tests were conducted on Middle-crack tension M(T) and compact tension C(T) specimens to determine the effects of specimen type, specimen width, notch tip sharpness and buckling on the fracture behavior of cracked thin sheet (0.04 inch thick) 2024-T3 aluminum alloy material. A series of M(T) specimens were tested with three notch tip configurations: (1) a fatigue pre-cracked notch, (2) a 0.010-inch-diameter wire electrical discharge machined (EDM) notch, and (3) a EDM notch sharpened with a razor blade. The test procedures are discussed and the experimental results for failure stress, load vs. crack extension and the material stress-strain response are reported. Book excerpt: As Directors of this NATO Workshop, we welcome this opportunity to record formally our thanks to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division for making our meeting possible through generous financial support and encouragement. This meeting has two purposes: the first obvious one because we have collected scientists from East, far East and west to discuss new development in the field of fracture mechanics: the notch fracture mechanics. The second is less obvious but perhaps in longer term more important that is the building of bridges between scientists in the frame of a network called Without Walls Institute on Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture". Physical perception of notch effects is not so easy to understand as the presence of a geometrical discontinuity as a worst effect than the simple reduction of cross section. Notch effects in fatigue and fracture is characterised by the following fundamental fact: it is not the maximum local stress or stress which governs the phenomena of fatigue and fracture. The physic shows that a process volume is needed probably to store the necessary energy for starting and propagating the phenomenon. This is a rupture of the traditional "strength of material" school which always give the prior importance of the local maximum stress. This concept of process volume was strongly affirmed during this workshop.

Book excerpt: A relationship between the stress concentration factor and the fracture toughness parameter was examined for the case of an elliptical hole in an infinite solid. Edge-notched specimens from three high-strength aluminum alloys were tensile loaded to failure. The resulting data from these tests were analyzed, using this relationship. It was indicated that the predicted proportionality between the fracture toughness parameter and the square root of the notch root radius does exist. Further examination of the relationship showed that the fracture occurs at a fixed state of strain within a plastic zone having a size proportional to the original root radius. A departure, however, from the predicted behavior was evident with the introduction of plane strain components at the notch root. This is also discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the mechanical properties of high-strength, structural aluminum alloys produced in heavy sections. Although tensile strengths of the alloys ranged from 40,000 to 75,000 psi, little difference in fatigue and corrosion fatigue properties was found among alloys on the basis of a 10,000,000 cycle life. Tests run to 100,000,000 cycles indicated some superiority for the lower strength alloys of the group. Notch bend tests, with specimens up to 3 in. sq, were conducted with alloys 5456-H321, 6061-T6, and 7079-T6 as a means of evaluating notch behavior and susceptibility to brittle fracture. The results demonstrated a marked decrease in fracture stress under conditions causing brittle fracture in alloy 7079. It is concluded that the notch bend tests, correlated with energy release rate concepts of brittle fracture propagation, offer a better approach to the study of notch behavior in these alloys than the more conventional impact tests. Part II: Applications in Aluminum Alloy Quality Assurance of Fracture Toughness written by WF. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is concerned with the use of the sharply notched cylindrical specimen as an index of plane-strain fracture toughness in quality assurance of aluminum alloy products. Specifically, information is presented that relates to the use of the ASTM Tentative Method for Sharp-Notch Tension Testing with Cylindrical Specimens (E 602-76T) in quality assurance programs. The first part of this paper describes the results of an investigation into the influence of fundamental testing variables on the sharp notch strength of several high-strength aluminum alloys. The results indicate that variations in the notch root radius and eccentricity of loading (expressed in terms of the percent bending in a verification specimen) within the range permitted by the Tentative Method can contribute significantly to the scatter observed in relations between the sharp notch to yield strength ratio (NYR) and KIc. The results also show that the upper limit of KIc beyond which the NYR loses useful sensitivity to further increases in KIc decreases with decreasing specimen size (diameter). It appears that the notch strength of the smaller of the two specimens (1⁄2 and 1116 in. diameter; 13 and 27 mm diameter) specified in the Tentative Method will have rather limited application as an index of KIc for the tougher high-strength aluminum alloys. However, the upper limit of 1.3 presently placed on the NYR appears to be overly conservative for high-strength aluminum alloys.
