Book excerpt: Due to the concern of underutilization of counseling services by Mexican Americans, several factors which have been identified in the research (acculturation, stress, and discrimination) were examined in relation to counseling attitudes. Ninety- seven Mexican American university students, who fit the criteria of Mexican American based on self identification participated in the study. All students were administered five measures which included the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans, a cultural commitment scale, the Hispanic Stress Inventory, the Perceptions of Discrimination Scale, and the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale. The purpose of the study was to explore the roles of acculturation, discrimination, and acculturative stress in relation to attitudes toward counseling for Mexican American college students and to further contribute to our understanding and knowledge of racism and its impact on ethnic minorities in counseling. Subjects were divided into high and low groups on measures of acculturation, acculturative stress, and perceptions of discrimination which was based on scores above and below the medians of instruments assessing these variables. Those who indicated experiencing higher levels of acculturative stress and perceptions of discrimination had overall more favorable attitudes toward seeking counseling than did those experiencing lower levels of acculturative stress and perceptions of discrimination. Women consistently had more favorable attitudes toward counseling than men based on the Need and Confidence subscales of the ATSPPH. The results of the Multiple Regression Analysis showed that discriminatory behaviors and attributes were significant predictors of overall Attitudes toward seeking psychological help. No significant differences were found between levels of acculturation and attitudes toward seeking counseling or between levels of cultural commitment and attitudes toward seeking counseling.

A second purpose of this study was to compare college students (n = 158) with their parents on their attitudes toward mental illness and toward seeking counseling. Among predictor variables, social stigma and the belief that mental illnesses are untreatable were the primary variables predicting attitudes toward seeking counseling. The more college students and their parents perceived there to be social stigma attached to those seeking therapy, and the more parents believed that mental illnesses are untreatable, the less favorable attitudes they had about seeking professional help. These attitudes were linked to their acculturation levels; in general, the more acculturated they were toward the Hispanic culture, the more pejorative their attitudes were toward mental illness and their willingness to seek professional help. Last, college students in general had significantly more positive attitudes toward mental illness and professional counseling than their parents. Recommendations for providing counseling with Hispanic clients are provided in the context of the present findings.

Book excerpt: This study sought to understand why college students of Mexican origin underutilize mental health services (i.e., university counseling services). Previous research has identified several potential reasons for the underutilization of mental health services by Mexican Americans. These reasons can be grouped into one of three categories: (1) negative attitudes toward mental illness and mental health services, (2) greater use of alternative, informal resources, and (3) barriers. To examine these factors in the context of help-seeking behavior, Ajzen's theory of planned behavior (TPB) was used. The TPB assumes that the best predictor of a certain behavior is an individual's intention to perform that specific behavior. This model includes three determinants of the intent to perform a certain behavior: (1) attitudes toward the behavior, (2) subjective normative beliefs about performing the behavior, and (3) perceived behavioral control of performing the behavior. The primary aim of this study was to examine the meditating effects of culture on the TPB and investigate the unique factors contributing to help-seeking behavior in college students of Mexican origin reporting anxious and/or depressive symptoms. Results showed that the TPB was effective in predicting help-seeking behavior, with attitudes and subjective normative beliefs as the strongest predictors. Acculturation and cultural values did not mediate the TPB model as originally predicted, however the TPB determinants differed in predictability between help-seekers and non help-seekers. Specifically, among help-seekers, attitudes predicted intent to seek psychological services; among non help-seekers, subjective normative beliefs predicted intent. Help-seekers also reported more ease than non help-seekers on a few of the steps toward help-seeking. Lastly, qualitative measures supported findings based on the TPB and provided additional support for the strong stigmatizing views among college students of Mexican origin. These findings suggest that non help-seekers are a complex group and other variables, such as acculturative stress, perceived social support, and screening participants on perceived symptom distress and impairment, need to be addressed. In addition, subjective normative beliefs need to be considered in the development of psychoeducational interventions which encourage seeking psychological services for individuals of Mexican origin experiencing significant anxious or depressive symptoms.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study is to understand better how acculturation, specifically acculturative stress, influences health and wellness among U.S.-born Mexican-heritage females. Specifically, the study explored the experiences of second- and U.S.-born Mexican-heritage women and their experiences of loss and gain of culture and its role in health and wellness, particularly mental health. Specifically, the study sought to explore how acculturative stress influenced health and mental health-maintenance practices. The Latino/a population is a large and fast growing population in the U.S. and the expected growth by 2050 will be 25% of the population (Pew Hispanic Center, 2012). Of the current total Latina/o population, 64% are of Mexican origin and 66% of those Mexican-origin Latina/os are U.S.-born (Pew Hispanic Center, 2012). However, literature regarding the healthand mental health of U.S.-born Latino/as is limited and asserts that there is a connection between racism, discrimination, and acculturation and health (Sternthal, Slopen, & Williams, 2011). The Hispanic Health Paradox highlights the perplexing direction with health outcomes among Spanish-speaking individuals (Markides & Coreil, 1986) and the decreasing health outcomes for the U.S. born generations (Acevedo-Garcia et al., 2007; Collins & David, 2009; de la Rosa, 2002; Guendelman et al., 1990; Ruiz et al., 2006; Scribner & Dwyer, 1989). The decrease is largely attributed to negative effects of acculturation and/or acculturation processes (de la Rosa, 2002; Guendelman et al., 1990; Scribner & Dwyer, 1989). A content analysis was conducted as the exploratory qualitative method for analyzing data for two reasons: (a) indicative and unobtrusive category formation and (b) easy integrationof cultural competence. The multi-step analyses of qualitative data per LeCompte (2000) was utilized as the framework for analysis of the current study, which included a process of coding, organizing, and interpreting the data. Participants included eight U.S.- born Mexican heritage female participants, of second-generation status. The participants' ages ranged from 24-37 years old (M = 32.12, SD = 5.51). As per study criteria, all participants reported their place of birth in the U.S. and in the state of California. In addition, half of the participants spoke both English and Spanish (n = 4) and the other half spoke English only (n = 4). All eight participants reported their language preference for English. In addition, all participants reported their generational status as second- generation, as per criteria for study participation. All of the participants identified their race as Hispanic or Latino and their ethnicity as Mexican/Mexican American. The findings revealed a number of meta-themes that described a bi-cultural world with which the U.S.-born Latinas contend, prominent experiences of racism and discrimination, conceptualization of health and wellness, and strength in one's Latina identity. In particular, the intersection of ethnicity and gender seemed to bring many difficult points of contention as well as strength. The findings provided some insight into a large gap into the literature exploring U.S.-born Mexican American heritage Latinas experiences of acculturative stress and health values.

Nevertheless, for decades, Latinos have trailed behind other ethnicities academically. Latinos also have a high risk of dropping out of high school and are less likely to enroll in four-year colleges (Ryan & Siebens, 2012; A stronger America, 2012). There are a number of factors that may influence this gap in academic achievement. For example, people who have more positive school attitudes appear to consistently perform better in school (Colangelo et al., 1993; McCoach, 2001). Thus, one of the factors that may affect academic achievement among Latinos is their attitude toward school. Another factor that may influence both school attitude and academic achievement is that of acculturation. Acculturation refers to the psychological and behavioral changes that the individual experiences as a result of being exposed to a new culture or group (Berry, 1987). In 1987, Berry proposed a bidimensional model that incorporates four different acculturation strategies: Integration, assimilation, marginalization, and separation. Individuals who use the integration strategy tend to maintain the heritage culture while adapting to the host culture. Individuals who use the assimilation strategy typically discard the heritage culture and fully immerse themselves in the host culture. In the separation strategy, individuals engage with the heritage culture and reject the host culture. Finally, in the marginalization strategy, individuals disconnect from both the heritage and host cultures. Assimilation and integration are believed to be associated with more positive outcomes, while separation and marginalization are believed to be associated with more negative outcomes (Berry 1997). In addition to acculturation, other studies have suggested that variables such as depression, anxiety, substance use, and perceived discrimination are negatively associated with academic outcomes (Alamilla, Kim, & Lam, 2010; Berry, 1997; Eccles et al., 2006). Thus, this thesis posits that these variables may mediate the relationship between acculturation and academic outcomes (including both school attitude and academic achievement). The results of this study indicate that acculturation was not related to academic achievement. However, it was related to the degree to which a student feels satisfied with teachers, class material, and academic related activities or services. In other words, acculturation was related to school attitude. Participants who reported a higher level of integration had a more positive school attitude, while participants who scored higher on assimilation had a more negative school attitude. Acculturation was also related to substance use, depression, anxiety, and perceived discrimination. Students who scored higher on separation were more likely to experience high levels of depression, anxiety, and perceived discrimination. Students who scored higher on assimilation were more likely to engage in higher levels of substance use, but were less likely to experience perceived discrimination. Students who scored high on integration were slightly less likely to report symptoms of depression. Depression meditated the relationship between the use of the separation acculturation strategy and school attitude. Substance use mediated the relationship between integration and school attitude. The thesis demonstrates the importance of acculturation strategy in understanding academic outcomes among Latino college students. These factors include acculturation, depression, anxiety, substance use, and perceived discrimination. It also discusses the implications of these findings for educators and programs targeting the academic success of Latino college students.
