Book excerpt: One of the defining attributes of the human species is sophisticated communication, for which facial expressions are crucial. Traditional research has so far mainly investigated a minority of 6 basic emotional expressions displayed as pictures. Despite the important insights of this approach, its ecological validity is limited: facial movements express more than emotions, and facial expressions are more than just pictures. The objective of the present thesis is therefore to improve the understanding of facial expression recognition by investigating the internal representations of a large range of facial expressions, displayed both as static pictures and as dynamic videos. To this end, it was necessary to develop and validate a new facial expression database which includes 20.000 stimuli of 55 expressions (study 1). Perceptual representations of the six basic emotional expressions were found previously to rely on evaluation of valence and arousal; study 2 showed that this evaluation generalises to many more expressions, particularly when displayed as videos. While it is widely accepted that knowledge influences perception, how these are linked is largely unknown; study 3 investigated this question by asking how knowledge about facial expressions, instantiated as conceptual representations, relates to perceptual representations of these expressions. A strong link was found which changed with the kind of expressions and the type of display. In probably the most extensive behavioural studies (with regards to the number of facial expressions used) to date, this thesis suggests that there are commonalities but also differences in processing of emotional and of other types of facial expressions. Thus, to understand facial expression processing, one needs to consider more than the 6 basic emotional expressions. These findings outline first steps towards a new domain in facial expression research, which has implications for a number of research and application fields where facial expressions play a role, ranging from social, developmental, and clinical psychology to computer vision and affective computing research.

From an evolutionary perspective, humans have been more extensively exposed to dynamic faces, as static face images have only appeared recently with the advent of photography and the expansion of digital tools. Yet, most studies investigating face perception have relied on static faces and only a little is known about the mechanisms involved in dynamic face processing.To clarify this issue, this thesis aimed to use dynamic faces to investigate different aspects of face processing in different populations and age groups. In Study 1, we used dynamic faces to investigate whether the ability of infants aged 6, 9, and 12 months in matching audible and visible attributes of gender is influenced by the use of adult-directed (ADS) vs. infant-directed (IDS) speech. Our results revealed that from 6 months of age, infants matched female faces and voices when presented with ADS. This ability emerged at 9 months of age when presented with IDS. Altogether, these findings support the idea that the perception of multisensory gender coherence is influenced by the nature of social interactions.In Study 2, we used a novel 4D technique to reconstruct the dynamic internal representations of the six basic expressions in a pure case of acquired prosopagnosia (i.e., a brain-damaged patient severely impaired in recognizing familiar faces). This was done in order to re-examine the debated issue of whether identity and expression are processed independently. Our results revealed that our patient used all facial features to represent basic expressions, contrasting sharply with her suboptimal use of facial information for identity recognition. These findings support the idea that different sets of representations underlie the processing of identity and expression. We then examined our patient's ability to recognize static and dynamic expressions using her internal representations as stimuli. Our results revealed that she was selectively impaired in recognizing many of the static expressions; whereas she displayed maximum accuracy in recognizing all the dynamic emotions with the exception of fear. The latter findings support recent evidence suggesting that separate cortical pathways, originating in early visual areas and not in the inferior occipital gyrus, are responsible for the processing of static and dynamic face information.Moving on from our second study, in Study 3, we investigated whether dynamic cues offer processing benefits for the recognition of facial expressions in other populations with immature or fragile face processing systems. To this aim, we conducted a large sample cross-sectional study with more than 400 participants aged between 5 to 96 years, investigating their ability to recognize the six basic expressions presented under different temporal conditions. Consistent with previous studies, our findings revealed the highest recognition performance for happiness, regardless of age and experimental condition, as well as marked confusions among expressions with perceptually similar facial signals (e.g., fear and surprise). By using Bayesian modelling, our results further enabled us to quantify, for each expression and condition individually, the steepness of increase and decrease in recognition performance, as well as the peak efficiency, the point at which observers' performance reaches its maximum before declining. Finally, our results offered new evidence for a dynamic advantage for facial expression recognition, stronger for some expressions than others and more important at specific points in development.Overall, the results highlighted in this thesis underlie the critical importance of research featuring dynamic stimuli in face perception and expression recognition studies; not only in the field of prosopagnosia, but also in other domains of developmental and clinical neuroscience.

Book excerpt: Dans le cadre de la psychologie sociale et cognitive, le travail de la présente thèse a pour objectif d'étudier de manière systématique l'influence de la perception d'une expression faciale émotionnelle sur la perception du temps. Pour cela, nous avons utilisé une tâche de bissection temporelle, dans laquelle les adultes et les enfants doivent évaluer la durée de présentation de visages neutres et de visages exprimant des émotions primaires (colère, peur, joie, tristesse et dégoût) ou secondaire (honte). Notre hypothèse est que la perception d'un visage émotionnel provoque une distorsion du temps perçu, dont les variations rendent compte de la fonction adaptative de chaque émotion en termes notamment de préparation à l'action. Les résultats de nos expériences révèlent que les émotions activatrices que sont la colère, la peur, la joie, et la tristesse, provoquent une distorsion temporelle par rapport au visage neutre, dans le sens d'une surestimation. Celle-ci est toutefois plus importante pour la colère et la peur, la préparation à l'action étant plus urgente pour ces deux émotions. Des analyses complémentaires révèlent que cette surestimation est provoquée par un mécanisme d'activation physiologique qui accélère le rythme de l'horloge interne, tel que le "temps interne" va relativement plus vite. Bien qu'étant activatrice, l'émotion de dégoût exprimée sur un visage n'affecte pas, quant à elle, la perception du temps. En revanche, quand il s'agit d'aliments suscitant cette émotion, une sous-estimation du temps est observée, liée à l'observation de l'aliment qui détourne l'attention du traitement de la durée. En fait, nos études montrent que le type de distorsions temporelles observées dépend non seulement de l'émotion évoquée, mais aussi de la nature du stimulus émotionnel et de sa signification. Par ailleurs, pour l'ensemble des émotions primaires, on observe le même type de distorsions temporelles chez des adultes et des enfants d'âges différents, indiquant qu'il s'agit d'un mécanisme adaptatif précoce. En revanche, l'effet de l'émotion secondaire de honte sur la perception du temps varie avec l'âge des enfants. Chez les enfants de 8 ans, comme chez les adultes, cette émotion provoque une sous-estimation temporelle, liée à l'évaluation du soi que déclenche cette émotion, qui du même coup capture l'attention au détriment du traitement de la durée. Chez les enfants de 5 ans, une telle sous-estimation ne s'observe pas, à cause de leurs difficultés à reconnaître ou à comprendre cette expression faciale de honte. Afin de mieux comprendre les processus impliqués dans l'effet des expressions faciales sur la perception du temps, nous avons conduit deux études supplémentaires qui montrent que cet effet est médiatisé par un mécanisme d'imitation automatique des expressions faciales. Enfin, afin de commencer à étudier l'effet sur la perception du temps du sentiment émotionnel lui-même et non seulement de la perception d'un stimulus émotionnel, une dernière étude a été réalisée sur des sujets dépressifs dont le sentiment de tristesse était élevé. Cette étude révèle que la symptômathologie dépressive provoque une sous-estimation temporelle de stimuli neutres, qui serait due à un ralentisssement de l'horloge interne, et dont le sentiment de tristesse est l'un des principaux prédicteurs. En résumé, le présent travail de recherche révèle l'importance du lien entre émotion et perception du temps pour l'adaptation du comportement de l'homme à son environnement social

Behaviour, event-related potentials (ERPs), and eye-tracking techniques can be used to investigate the underlying brain mechanisms supporting this seemingly effortless processing of facial expression. Facial expression recognition involves not only the extraction of expressive information from diagnostic facial features, known as part-based processing, but also the integration of featural information, known as configural processing. Despite the critical role of diagnostic features in emotion recognition and extensive research in this area, it is still not known how the brain decodes configural information in terms of emotion recognition. The complexity of facial information integration becomes evident when comparing performance between healthy subjects and individuals with schizophrenia because those patients tend to process featural information on emotional faces. The different ways in examining faces possibly impact on social-cognitive ability in recognizing emotions. Therefore, this thesis investigates the role of diagnostic features and face configuration in the recognition of facial expression. In addition to behavior, we examined both the spatiotemporal dynamics of fixations using eye-tracking, and early neurocognitive sensitivity to face as indexed by the P100 and N170 ERP components. In order to address the questions, we built a new set of sketch face stimuli by transforming photographed faces from the Radboud Faces Database through the removal of facial texture and retaining only the diagnostic features (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth) with neutral and four facial expressions - anger, sadness, fear, happiness. Sketch faces supposedly impair configural processing in comparison with photographed faces, resulting in increased sensitivity to diagnostic features through part-based processing. The direct comparison of neurocognitive measures between sketch and photographed faces expressing basic emotions has never been tested. In this thesis, we examined (i) eye fixations as a function of stimulus type, and (ii) neuroelectric response to experimental manipulations such face inversion and deconfiguration. The use of these methods aimed to reveal which face processing drives emotion recognition and to establish neurocognitive markers of emotional sketch and photographed faces processing. Overall, the behavioral results showed that sketch faces convey sufficient expressive information (content of diagnostic features) as in photographed faces for emotion recognition. There was a clear emotion recognition advantage for happy expressions as compared to other emotions. In contrast, recognizing sad and angry faces was more difficult. Concomitantly, results of eye-tracking showed that participants employed more part-based processing on sketch and photographed faces during second fixation. The extracting information from the eyes is needed when the expression conveys more complex emotional information and when stimuli are impoverished (e.g., sketch). Using electroencephalographic (EEG), the P100 and N170 components are used to study the effect of stimulus type (sketch, photographed), orientation (inverted, upright), and deconfiguration, and possible interactions. Results also suggest that sketch faces evoked more part-based processing. The cues conveyed by diagnostic features might have been subjected to early processing, likely driven by low-level information during P100 time window, followed by a later decoding of facial structure and its emotional content in the N170 time window. In sum, this thesis helped elucidate elements of the debate about configural and part-based face processing for emotion recognition, and extend our current understanding of the role of diagnostic features and configural information during neurocognitive processing of facial expressions of emotion.
