Book excerpt: This paper reports recently completed structural dynamics experimental activities with new ultra-lightweight and inflatable space structures (a.k.a., "Gossamer" spacecraft) at NASA Langley Research Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Nine aspects of this work are covered: 1) inflated, rigidized tubes, 2) active control experiments, 3) photogrammetry, 4) laser vibrometry, 5) modal tests of inflatable structures, 6) in-vacuum modal tests, 7) tensioned membranes, 8) deployment tests, and 9) flight experiment support. Structural dynamics will play a major role in the design and eventually in-space deployment and performance of Grossamer spacecraft. Experimental research and development such as this is required to validate new analysis methods.

Book excerpt: NASA and other space agencies are now looking to create a lunar settlement for the continued exploration of Moon and beyond. The most challenging aspect of a lunar settlement is its construction, and the weight and size of building materials brought from Earth. In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) and inflatable structures are considered to be the most preferred way for the fabrication of a lunar settlement because they minimize weight and size. The use and performance of inflatables and flexible structures in space applications have been increased in the recent past due to the technological advancements in materials technology. So, we propose the concept of two-tier semi-rigid inflatable structure where the base is built with the help of autonomous robots using ISRU, and the main inflatable structure is manufactured on Earth and inflated on the lunar surface. Also, magnesium is proposed as the base material as it is the most abundantly available structural-strength material in lunar environment, and it is relatively easy to machine. A hemispherical inflatable structure placed on top of a cylindrical base with regolith shielding around the structure is considered as a possible lunar design as well as the test prototype. A static analysis is first conducted on the proposed design using ANSYS, and the stress values are order-of-magnitude verified with simple calculations that prove the possibility of the material and model. Also, an order-of-magnitude analysis is conducted on meteoroid impact loads where we estimate the maximum size of meteoroid that our structure can sustain. As future work, we suggest the framework known as Performance Based Engineering. We had spent some time attempting to use this framework for a simplified lunar structural analysis. However, large data gaps precluded significant progress. But we include it as one of our future research topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical algorithm is created in general context and is flexible for a large variety of material models. For a closed membrane structure, the skew symmetric constraint parameters vanish, while the existing symmetric domain variables mirror preservation of the system. This procedure does not demand the discretization of the fluid (gas) domain or the link between coupling of fluid (gas) and membrane. As a result of this basic fact, the computation is drastically simplified. The adaptive structures model introduces a novel approach in harnessing solar power for reuse on the ground as a stable source of power. The simulations were based on the space part of the stiff structure created of hexagonal membrane cells. Simulations are carried out in Abaqus Finite Element Analysis software for simplicity & a comparison for validation purposes is tested against an experimental inflatable cell within a vacuum chamber. It was showcased that the final configuration could be achieved regardless of the packaging shape of the inflatable cell array. The inflatable beam model is comprised of two sections, the bending & buckling of the inflated beam and the post-inflation of the bent and buckled beam. Abaqus software was used to simulate the inflatable beam during each configuration utilizing the integration of a modified VUMAT subroutine. A comparison is showcased representing the importance of the integration of the VUMAT subroutine within our Abaqus model.

Book excerpt: Inflatable structures used for space applications offer mass, volume, and cost savings to spacecraft programs, allowing larger space structures to be built. For certain space applications, there are advantages to using large structures. For example, antennas achieve higher gains when they are increased in size. Higher gains equate to higher data throughputs. Therefore, inflatable structures offer improvements in performance to certain types of spacecraft components. Environmental factors induce surface errors on large inflatable structures, though. This degrades performance, especially for inflatable antennas. To reduce this degradation, active and passive control systems can be used to sense errors and control the shape of the antenna. One method of applying an active and passive control system is by using piezoelectric films that are either attached to or are part of the inflatable structure. The research performed for this thesis explored the theoretical performance of a large inflatable space-based antenna via spreadsheet analysis and the physical performance of a piezoelectric film via laboratory experimentation. For the laboratory experiment, the film was attached to a drum and varying internal pressures and voltages were applied. Also, in order to validate the experimental results, an analytical model was created using MSC/PATRAN and MSC/NASTRAN software.

Book excerpt: This book collects state-of-the-art research and technology for design, analysis, construction and maintenance of textile and inflatable structures. Textile composites and inflatable structures have become increasingly popular for a variety of applications in – among many other fields – civil engineering, architecture and aerospace engineering. Typical examples include membrane roofs and covers, sails, inflatable buildings and pavilions, airships, inflatable furniture, airspace structures etc. The book contains 18 invited contributions written by distinguished authors who participated in the International Conference on Textile Composites and Inflated Structures held in Barcelona from June 30th to July 2nd, 2003. The meeting was one of the Thematic Conferences of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS). The different chapters discuss recent progress and future research directions in membrane and inflatable structures built with new textile composite materials. Approximately half of the book focuses on describing innovative numerical methods for structural analysis of such structures, such as new nonlinear membrane and shell finite elements. The rest of the chapters present advances in design, construction and maintenance procedures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials being considered for use in thin-film applications of inflatable structures were exposed to a simulated space environment representing a 5-year Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and also to a 5-year Geo- synchronous Orbit (GEO). Solar absorptance and tensile test measurements were performed, pre- and posttest. The materials consisted of various thin polymer foils, including 0.0005-in. bare and metallized Kapton E, LaRC-CPl, LaRC-CP2, FEP Teflon, Triton conductive COR, and slightly thicker (0.0008 to 0.0018-in.) films of Triton TOR, Triton TOR-LM, and Triton TOR-RC. A total of 34 samples were exposed plus control and contamination monitors. Measurements of solar absorptance and tensile properties were made on samples corresponding to both Low Earth and Geosynchronous Orbit exposures. Increases in solar absorptance were observed for many of the samples. Changes in mechanical properties are also indicated by the results, but there was scatter in the test data due to the limitation of the number of samples that allowed only two of each type to be exposed to each orbital condition, and some to only GEO exposure conditions. The property changes on thin polymer films due to space environmental exposure must be considered in the design of inflatable structures. The Kapton E samples and the fluorinated polyimides (CPl and CP2) showed the least degradation. The low-modulus version of TOR (TOR-LM) appeared to be the most stable of the other films.
