Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Inflammation by : Charles N. Serhan
Download or read book Fundamentals of Inflammation written by Charles N. Serhan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-26 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acute inflammatory response is the body's first system of alarm signals that are directed toward containment and elimination of microbial invaders. Uncontrolled inflammation has emerged as a pathophysiologic basis for many widely occurring diseases in the general population that were not initially known to be linked to the inflammatory response, including cardiovascular disease, asthma, arthritis, and cancer. To better manage treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of these wide-ranging diseases, multidisciplinary research efforts are underway in both academic and industry settings. This book provides an introduction to the cell types, chemical mediators, and general mechanisms of the host's first response to invasion. World-class experts from institutions around the world have written chapters for this introductory text. The text is presented as an introductory springboard for graduate students, medical scientists, and researchers from other disciplines wishing to gain an appreciation and working knowledge of current cellular and molecular mechanisms fundamental to inflammation.

Book Synopsis Inflammation and the Microcirculation by : D. Neil Granger
Download or read book Inflammation and the Microcirculation written by D. Neil Granger and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and enhanced thrombosis, increased vascular permeability, and an increase in the rate of proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels. A variety of cells that normally circulate in blood (leukocytes, platelets) or reside within the vessel wall (endothelial cells, pericytes) or in the perivascular space (mast cells, macrophages) are activated in response to inflammation. The activation products and chemical mediators released from these cells act through different well-characterized signaling pathways to induce the phenotypic changes in microvessel function that accompany inflammation. Drugs that target a specific microvascular response to inflammation, such as leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion or angiogenesis, have shown promise in both the preclinical and clinical studies of inflammatory disease. Future research efforts in this area will likely identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention in inflammation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Historical Perspectives / Anatomical Considerations / Impaired Vasomotor Responses / Capillary Perfusion / Angiogenesis / Leukocyte-Endothelial Cell Adhesion / Platelet-Vessel Wall Interactions / Coagulation and Thrombosis / Endothelial Barrier Dysfunction / Epilogue / References

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although clinicians have recognized the importance of inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of heart disease for well over 200 years, it has taken nearly as many years for clinicians and scientists to focus on the basic biological mechanisms by which inflammatory mediators contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiac disease states. Over the past decade there has been increasing interest in the potential role that inflammatory mediators, play in a variety of cardiac disease states, including chronic heart failure. The Role of Inflammatory Mediators in the Failing Heart provides a state-of-the-art review on inflammatory mediators and the failing heart. This book will serve both as a useful introduction to the field, as well as an update for those interested in the role of inflammatory mediators and the failing heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Pure and Applied Biology, Modern Trends in Physiological Sciences, Volume 37: Chemical Mediators of the Acute Inflammatory Reaction traces the history of investigation into the acute inflammatory reaction from the early observations in invertebrates to the experiments of therapeutic significance for humans. This book focuses on mediators that are accepted as being commonly involved in the inflammatory reaction, such as histamine, kinins, serotonin, prostaglandins, and permeability factors. The topics discussed include the phagocytic system and antibody production; factors which influence phagocytosis; measurement of the acute inflammatory reaction; and combined actions of mediators. The reaction to injury and manifestation of inflammation and biochemical aspects of anti-inflammatory drug reaction are also covered. This volume is beneficial to anatomists, biochemists, physiologists, immunologists, pathologists, pharmacologists, and clinicians interested in acute inflammatory reaction.

Book Synopsis Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease by : Z. Kmiec
Download or read book Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease written by Z. Kmiec and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is only during the last decade that the functions of sinusoidal endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells, pit cells and other intrahepatic lymphocytes have been better understood. The development of methods for isolation and co-culturing various types of liver cells has established that they communicate and cooperate via secretion of various intercellular mediators. This monograph summarizes multiple data that suggest the important role of cellular cross-talk for the functions of both normal and diseased liver. Special features of the book include concise presentation of the majority of detailed data in 19 tables. Original schemes allow for the clear illustration of complicated intercellular relationships. This is the first ever presentation of the newly emerging field of liver biology, which is important for hepatic function in health and disease and opens new avenues for therapeutic interventions.
