Download or read book Screened Stages written by Rachel Joseph and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to tracing the variety of ways that theatre, theatricality, and performance are embedded in Hollywood cinema as screened stages. A screened stage is the literal or metaphorical appearance of a stage on screen. When the Hollywood style emerged in cinema history it traumatically severed the entwined relationship between film and theatre. The book makes the argument that cinema longs for theatre after that separation. The histories of stage and screen persistently crisscross one another making their separation problematic. The screened stage from the end of the nineteenth century until now offers a miniaturized version of cinema and theatre history. Moments of the stage within the screen compress historical styles and movements into saturated representations on film. Such examples overflow the cinematic screen into singular manifestations of presentness. Screened stages uncover what it means to be simultaneously present and absent. This book would be of great interest to students and scholars of theatre, film, dance, and performance.

Literally meaning to pull and stretch, Dō-In originated as a way of achieving longevity and attaining the highest potential of mental and spiritual development. Dō-In techniques are a series of motions designed to harmonize body systems. The Dō-In Way details the fundamental aspects of this exercise, which involves breathing, posture, and self-massage and manipulation to stimulate body systems. The gentle application of pressure on the body’s meridians corresponds with physical processes, and allows for the conditioning of internal organs. This is a comprehensive handbook to an ancient system of movement designed to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Download or read book Infinity written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selection of pastel drawings and photographs made during the past year. The title is inspired by the continuity of the artist's artistic practice as a thread woven into her life during her pivotal year of 2014. At that moment, the artist spend most of her efforts traveling between London and Sweden, as well as spending a few months in india and Finland. In time, the drawings came to constitute a personal diary, representing on paper a reflection inspired by observations of atmospheres, colors, and elements. Alongside these drawings, the book contains a selection of photographs taken in the same period. Whereas the drawings are interior impressions of these transformational experiences, the photographs are the exterior documentations. The photographs come to light from the outside, and the drawings reach the world from inside the mind and body. This book is a meeting ground of these shared and yet personal worlds, as the pages allow both of these exposures to weave infinitely through each other, representing a vastness of interdependent subtleties. the works were made between 2013 and 2014 while traveling and living in Italy, Sweden, Oman, India, Finland, and London.

Book Synopsis Of Borders and Thresholds by : Michal Kobialka
Download or read book Of Borders and Thresholds written by Michal Kobialka and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theatre is full of borders and boundaries: between the "real" and "illusionary" conditions of the stage, between the way one acts onstage and in "real" life, between stage and audience, performance and reception. As such, theatre offers a unique opportunity to examine the construction, representation, and functioning of borders. This is the task undertaken by the authors of this volume, the first to apply the lexicon and concepts of border theory to theatre history and performance theory. The contributors, highly regarded theatre historians, theorists, and practitioners, address a wide range of border-related themes. Their topics include the construction of "America" in the sixteenth century, theatre practices in eighteenth-century England, American Latino playwrights, performances of gender and sexuality, cyborg technologies, and fashion.
Download or read book Dark Matter written by Andrew Sofer and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark Matter maps the invisible dimension of theater whose effects are felt everywhere in performance. Examining phenomena such as hallucination, offstage character, offstage action, sexuality, masking, technology, and trauma, Andrew Sofer engagingly illuminates the invisible in different periods of postclassical western theater and drama. He reveals how the invisible continually structures and focuses an audience’s theatrical experience, whether it’s black magic in Doctor Faustus, offstage sex in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, masked women in The Rover, self-consuming bodies in Suddenly Last Summer, or surveillance technology in The Archbishop’s Ceiling. Each discussion pinpoints new and striking facets of drama and performance that escape sight. Taken together, Sofer’s lively case studies illuminate how dark matter is woven into the very fabric of theatrical representation. Written in an accessible style and grounded in theater studies but interdisciplinary by design, Dark Matter will appeal to theater and performance scholars, literary critics, students, and theater practitioners, particularly playwrights and directors.
