Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with algebraic topology, homotopy theory and simple homotopy theory of infinite CW-complexes with ends. Contrary to most other works on these subjects, the current volume does not use inverse systems to treat these topics. Here, the homotopy theory is approached without the rather sophisticated notion of pro-category. Spaces with ends are studied only by using appropriate constructions such as spherical objects of CW-complexes in the category of spaces with ends, and all arguments refer directly to this category. In this way, infinite homotopy theory is presented as a natural extension of classical homotopy theory. In particular, this book introduces the construction of the proper groupoid of a space with ends and then the cohomology with local coefficients is defined by the enveloping ringoid of the proper fundamental groupoid. This volume will be of interest to researchers whose work involves algebraic topology, category theory, homological algebra, general topology, manifolds, and cell complexes.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the study of infinite matrices and their approximation by matrices of finite size. The main concepts presented are invertibility at infinity (closely related to Fredholmness), limit operators, and the stability and convergence of finite matrix approximations. Concrete examples are used to illustrate the results throughout, including discrete Schrödinger operators and integral and boundary integral operators arising in mathematical physics and engineering.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of the best-selling, highly acclaimed first edition, the technology and clinical applications of medical imaging have changed significantly. Gathering these developments into one volume, Webb’s Physics of Medical Imaging, Second Edition presents a thorough update of the basic physics, modern technology and many examples of clinical application across all the modalities of medical imaging. New to the Second Edition Extensive updates to all original chapters Coverage of state-of-the-art detector technology and computer processing used in medical imaging 11 new contributors in addition to the original team of authors Two new chapters on medical image processing and multimodality imaging More than 50 percent new examples and over 80 percent new figures Glossary of abbreviations, color insert and contents lists at the beginning of each chapter Keeping the material accessible to graduate students, this well-illustrated book reviews the basic physics underpinning imaging in medicine. It covers the major techniques of x-radiology, computerised tomography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, in addition to infrared, electrical impedance and optical imaging. The text also describes the mathematics of medical imaging, image processing, image perception, computational requirements and multimodality imaging.

The main problem for mathematics teachers being how to facilitate their students' understanding of the mathematics being taught. In combining elements of maths, philosophy, logic, linguistics and the psychology of maths education from her own and European research, Dr Sierpinska considers the contributions of the social and cultural contexts to understanding. The outcome is an insight into both mathematics and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique path for graduate or advanced undergraduate students to begin studying the rich subject of functional analysis with fewer prerequisites than is normally required. The text begins with a self-contained and highly efficient introduction to topology and measure theory, which focuses on the essential notions required for the study of functional analysis, and which are often buried within full-length overviews of the subjects. This is particularly useful for those in applied mathematics, engineering, or physics who need to have a firm grasp of functional analysis, but not necessarily some of the more abstruse aspects of topology and measure theory normally encountered. The reader is assumed to only have knowledge of basic real analysis, complex analysis, and algebra. The latter part of the text provides an outstanding treatment of Banach space theory and operator theory, covering topics not usually found together in other books on functional analysis. Written in a clear, concise manner, and equipped with a rich array of interesting and important exercises and examples, this book can be read for an independent study, used as a text for a two-semester course, or as a self-contained reference for the researcher.
