Book excerpt: This volume contains all the papers presented at the Ninth International Con- rence on Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT’98), held at the European education centre Europ ̈aisches Bildungszentrum (ebz) Otzenhausen, Germany, October 8{ 10, 1998. The Conference was sponsored by the Japanese Society for Arti cial Intelligence (JSAI) and the University of Kaiserslautern. Thirty-four papers on all aspects of algorithmic learning theory and related areas were submitted, all electronically. Twenty-six papers were accepted by the program committee based on originality, quality, and relevance to the theory of machine learning. Additionally, three invited talks presented by Akira Maruoka of Tohoku University, Arun Sharma of the University of New South Wales, and Stefan Wrobel from GMD, respectively, were featured at the conference. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our invited speakers for sharing with us their insights on new and exciting developments in their areas of research. This conference is the ninth in a series of annual meetings established in 1990. The ALT series focuses on all areas related to algorithmic learning theory including (but not limited to): the theory of machine learning, the design and analysis of learning algorithms, computational logic of/for machine discovery, inductive inference of recursive functions and recursively enumerable languages, learning via queries, learning by arti cial and biological neural networks, pattern recognition, learning by analogy, statistical learning, Bayesian/MDL estimation, inductive logic programming, robotics, application of learning to databases, and gene analyses.

Book excerpt: Cross-device Web Search is the first book to examine cross-device search behavior, which takes place when people utilize multiple devices and several sessions to research the same topic. Providing a comprehensive examination of cross-device search behaviors, the book also models and analyses their most important features and, by doing so, helps to elucidate the motivations behind such behaviors. Drawing on a variety of methods and sources, including system design, user experiments, and qualitative and quantitative analysis, the book introduces cross-device search, relates it to relevant conceptual models, and identifies cross-device search topics. Providing discussion of a comprehensive range of behaviors in the context of cross-device search, including querying, gazing, clicking, and touching, the book also presents the design and development of a system to support cross-device search, explores cross-device search behavior modeling, and predicts users’ search performance. Cross-device Web Search will be of great interest to academics and students situated in the fields of library and information science, computer science, and management science. The book should also provide fascinating insights to practitioners and others interested in information search retrieval, information seeking behavior, and human-computer interaction communities.

There are articles on weakly o-minimal theories, algorithmic complexity of relations, models within the computable model theory, hierarchies of randomness tests, computable numberings, and complexity problems of minimal unsatisfiable formulas. The problems of characterization of the deduction-detachment theorem, ?1-induction, completeness of Le?niewski's systems, and reduction calculus for the satisfiability problem are also discussed. The coverage includes the answer to Kanovei's question about the upper bound for the complexity of equivalence relations by convergence at infinity for continuous functions. The volume also gives some applications to computer science such as solving the problems of inductive interference of languages from the full collection of positive examples and some negative data, the effects of random negative data, methods of formal specification and verification on the basis of model theory and multiple-valued logics, interval fuzzy algebraic systems, the problems of information exchange among agents on the base topological structures, and the predictions provided by inductive theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961, C. Zener, then Director of Science at Westinghouse Corpora tion, and a member of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences who has made important contributions to physics and engineering, published a short article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences entitled" A Mathe matical Aid in Optimizing Engineering Design. " In this article Zener considered the problem of finding an optimal engineering design that can often be expressed as the problem of minimizing a numerical cost function, termed a "generalized polynomial," consisting of a sum of terms, where each term is a product of a positive constant and the design variables, raised to arbitrary powers. He observed that if the number of terms exceeds the number of variables by one, the optimal values of the design variables can be easily found by solving a set of linear equations. Furthermore, certain invariances of the relative contribution of each term to the total cost can be deduced. The mathematical intricacies in Zener's method soon raised the curiosity of R. J. Duffin, the distinguished mathematician from Carnegie Mellon University who joined forces with Zener in laying the rigorous mathematical foundations of optimizing generalized polynomials. Interes tingly, the investigation of optimality conditions and properties of the optimal solutions in such problems were carried out by Duffin and Zener with the aid of inequalities, rather than the more common approach of the Kuhn-Tucker theory.
