Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt dabei auf dem Einfluss, den Armut auf die Entwicklung eines Kindes nimmt. Kinder werden nicht von selbst arm, Kinder werden in Armutsverhältnisse hineingeboren. Das Aufwachsen in beengtem Wohnraum, Arbeitslosigkeit der Eltern und fehlendes Geld für kulturelle, bildende oder sportliche außerfamiliäre Aktivitäten fehlt. Die daraus resultierenden Konsequenzen für die gesundheitliche Entwicklungsdimension von Kindern werden in dieser Arbeit erläutert und dargestellt. Verschiedene Wohlstandsorganisationen untersuchen seit einiger Zeit den Einfluss der sozialen Lage auf die kindliche Entwicklung. Durch empirische Fakten und Zahlen wird dargestellt, welches Ausmaß die Kinderarmut in Deutschland hat und inwiefern dieses Ausmaß zur Beeinträchtigung der Gesundheitsqualität von Kindern beiträgt. Betrachtet werden hier die Haushaltsstrukturen in denen Familien mit Kindern leben. Im letzten Schritt der Arbeit wird der gesundheitliche Zustand von Kindern im Zusammenhang mit ihrem sozialen Status untersucht. Dabei soll beleuchtet werden welche gesundheitlichen Beeinträchtigungen Kinder aus sozial schwächeren Familien erleben und wie die Verteilung der Faktoren allgemeiner Gesundheitszustand, Psyche und Verhaltensauffälligkeiten, sowie Übergewicht dargestellt ist.

Die Auswertung des Mikrozensus, eine repräsentative Haushaltsbefragung des Statistischen Bundesamtes ergab, dass im Jahr 2014 etwa 1,9 Millionen Kinder unter 15 Jahren in einkommensarmen Haushalten lebten. Seitdem wird das Phänomen wieder verstärkt auf sozialpolitischer Ebene und in den Medien diskutiert. Im Vergleich zu anderen Industrieländern galt das Thema Kinderarmut in Deutschland jedoch lange Zeit als gesellschaftliches Randphänomen, dem nur geringfügig Interesse geschenkt wurde. Bis in die späten 1990er Jahre wurde die Armut von Kindern und Jugendlichen hierzulande lediglich als Teilaspekt der Familienarmut behandelt. Erst mit der Veröffentlichung altersspezifischer Armuts- und Sozialberichte wurden Kinder und Jugendliche als eigenständige soziale Gruppe in der Armutsforschung wahrgenommen und ihre Armutsbetroffenheit als gesondertes Problem- und Forschungsfeld begriffen. Inzwischen herrscht sowohl in der Politik als auch in der Fachpraxis Einigkeit darüber, dass „Kinderarmut ein ernst zu nehmendes Problem [sowohl] für Individuen [...] [als auch] für die Gesellschaft darstellt“
