Book excerpt: The influence of a grandmother can be an important factor in a new mother's decisions about infant feeding. Research suggests that an important predictor of choosing to breastfeed is whether or not your own mother breastfed her child(ren). In addition mothers state that they need and want their mothers' support both in making the decision to breastfeed and in being supported while doing so. In Newfoundland and Labrador, many grandmothers who had their children during the 1960s or 1970s when breastfeeding rates were low are unable to pass on helpful breastfeeding advice. However, including the maternal grandmother in a discussion on infant feeding practices with the goal of better understanding their experiences and perspectives is important. The purpose of this study was to examine the primary influences that impacted grandmothers' choices of infant feeding in Newfoundland and Labrador and to explore the role that grandmothers feel they played in their daughters' choices about infant feeding. Twenty two maternal grandmothers who bottle fed their children and whose daughters bottle fed their babies were recruited to participate in either one of four focus groups or two semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were analysed using the constant comparative method of analysis to reveal insights into the grandmothers' perceptions and experiences. Three themes emerged describing how the grandmothers felt about infant feeding: powerlessness, modesty, and ambivalence. These themes provided insight into the way that the grandmothers made decisions about how to feed their babies and the way that they interacted with their daughters in regards to infant feeding. A better understanding of grandmothers' views of infant feeding may be used to develop an educational intervention to help improve grandmothers' knowledge and perceptions of breastfeeding and to therefore help mobilize the much needed support their daughters require to breastfeed.

Is the popularity of boiled dinner--salt beef or pork with root crops--on the wane? Why do the Innu of Davis Inlet call Social Services "the food boss"? How prevalent was beriberi in pre-Confederation Newfoundland? What are dietitians and food scientists in the province concerned about now? The only book of its kind in Canada, this bibliography answers these questions and asks others that are equally compelling.

Book excerpt: “Did you ever go to bed and wonder if your child was getting enough to eat?” For food insecure mothers, the worry is constant, and babies are at risk of going hungry. Through compelling interviews, Lesley Frank answers the breastfeeding paradox: why women who can least afford to buy infant formula are less likely to breastfeed. She exposes the shocking reality of food insecurity for formula-fed babies and the constraints limiting mothers’ ability to breastfeed. Out of Milk calls out the pressing need to establish the economic and social conditions necessary for successful breastfeeding and for accessible and safe formula feeding for families everywhere.

Book excerpt: In the current environment of deepening class and income inequality, it is essential to understand the socio-economic conditions that shape the health of individuals and communities. Now in its third edition, Dennis Raphael’s Social Determinants of Health offers a comprehensive discussion of the primary factors that influence the health of Canada’s population. This seminal text on the social determinants of health contains contributions from top academics and high-profile experts from across the country. Taking a public policy approach, the authors in this edited collection critically analyze the structural inequalities embedded in our society and the socio-economic factors that affect health, including income, education, employment, housing, food security, gender, and race. The thorough updates to this edition include a greater focus on the political mechanisms that explain the distribution of the social determinants of health and additional material on public policy, early childhood education in Canada, and the determinants of Indigenous peoples’ health. Rich in pedagogical tools including critical thinking questions and lists of recommended readings and online resources, this book will actively engage students and researchers alike.
