When they arrive, the person in charge of the servants introduces herself as Nilda Gaziel, the margrave’s second daughter. But the name “Nilda” was conspicuously absent from the initial briefing Aura gave her husband. Did Aura know of her existence and simply not mention it? Did she forget? Or is there perhaps some more sinister meaning behind it? Things get more complicated when a delegation from the Kingdom of Nabara trespasses, causing the situation to escalate. Zenjirou is soon saddled with the task of keeping the peace to the best of his ability and must rely on Freya’s help for a solution, bringing them closer together. How much will their relationship deepen, and will Zenjirou be able to juggle everything without getting swept away by romance or political intrigue?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the seventeenth century in Spain marks a rapid rise in the commercial market for cultural production. This book examines the evolution of this commercial market as reflected in the maturation of two genres: the public theater and the novel. Through a comparative analysis of the play-wright Lope de Vega and the novelists Mateo Aleman and Miguel de Cervantes, the author explores the new poetic principles, both implicitly and explicitly, that accompany the rise of this commercialized literature. The book argues that the logic of classical economic theory becomes internalized within the poetic structure of these two genres. Within this logic, the idea of taste comes to play a new and unprecedented role as the arbiter of literary value. Exposed increasingly to the pressures of popular taste, these writers are forced to rework or abandon many of the traditional poetic ideas of the Renaissance in a process that tends to undermine the writer's control over his own work. Donald Gilbert-Santamaria teaches in the Division of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Book excerpt: The Princess Bride meets Game of Thrones in this commercial YA trilogy from acclaimed fantasy author Sarah Henning. Princess Amarande is finally on the verge of having everything she wants. To be with her true love Luca, no one nor law standing in the way. To rule Ardenia as queen outright, no marriage necessary, as Luca does the same with the reformed Torrence. To rebuild the continent of The Sand and Sky into a place not defined by archaic, patriarchal laws, but by the will of its people. However, threats await in the shadows of Amarande’s hoped-for happily ever after. One expected and deadly to both her love and every one of her objectives. The other, unexpected, and arising with a vicious aim: revenge at any cost. Against the princess who killed him, the boy whose love made her do it, and the continent cruel enough to deserve his rage. The King Will Kill You is the epic, pulse-pounding conclusion to Sarah Henning’s Kingdoms of Sand and Sky trilogy. Book excerpt: A huge ship, the Glasir’s Leaf, has just appeared off the coast of Capua’s largest port of Valentia, carrying an envoy of the Northern Continent from the Kingdom of Uppasala. The envoy in question calls herself the country’s first princess, Freya Uppasala, and wishes to open talks with Capua. Bound to the capital as she is, Aura cannot see to the matter herself, so Zenjirou is sent far from home for the sake of diplomacy. While both parties sound each other out and try to benefit from an agreement between the two countries, the ambitious General Pujol is far from idle, leading his troops into the mountains between Valentia and the salt road to combat the swarm raptor threat. Capua is now fighting on two fronts: a logistical nightmare to ensure the steady supply of salt to its lands and a diplomatic battle between royals to raise its status on the Southern Continent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Emotion explores the intersection of powerful emotional states—love, melancholy, grief, and madness—with gender and political power on the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Using an array of sources—literary texts, medical treatises, and archival documents—Nuria Silleras-Fernandez focuses on three royal women: Isabel of Portugal (1428–1496), queen-consort of Castile; Isabel of Aragon (1470–1498), queen-consort of Portugal; and Juana of Castile (1479–1555), queen of Castile and its empire. Each of these women was perceived by their contemporaries as having gone "mad" as a result of excessive grief, and all three were related to Isabel the Catholic (1451–1504), queen of Castile and a woman lauded in her time as a paragon of reason. Through the lives and experiences of these royal women and the observations, judgments, and machinations of their families, entourages, and circles of writers, chronicles, courtiers, moralists, and physicians in their orbits, Silleras-Fernandez addresses critical questions about how royal women in Iberia were expected to behave, the affective standards to which they were held, and how perceptions about their emotional states influenced the way they were able to exercise power. More broadly, The Politics of Emotion details how the court cultures in medieval and early modern Castile and Portugal contributed to the development of new notions of emotional excess and mental illness.
