Book excerpt: This is a process report for research performed from July 1, 1986 to June 30, 1987, for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under subcontract number 9265205 with the project title: Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactor Cavity Analysis. This research generally considers the problems of vaporization and condensation of liquid metal or solid first surface materials in high yield ICF facilities such as reactors or high yield target test experiments. The past year's research consisted of 1.2 man years of effort on three tasks. These tasks were: verify the current vaporization-condensation models in CONRAD through literature surveys of relevant published data, and evaluation and comparison of these data with predictions by CONRAD on condensation phenomena, and with predictions by CONRAD, ZPINCH, and/or MIXERG on radiation phenomena, design a small-scale vaporization experiment by evaluating existing experimental facilities, selecting a primary facility, and conceptually designing an experiment complete with facility parameters and measurables, and design a small-scale condensation experiment including experimental parameters, measurables, and diagnostics. 48 refs.

Book excerpt: Cavity phenomena in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) are created by the interaction of energy released by the fuel pellet microexplosion with the medium inside the reactor cavity. The ambient state of the medium in ICF reactor cavities is restricted primarily by its effects on laser beam propagation and on the fuel pellet trajectory. Therefore, a relatively wide choice of ambient conditions can be exploited to gain first-wall protection and advantages in energy extraction. Depending on the choice of ambient cavity conditions and on fuel pellet design, a variety of physical phenomena may develop and dominate the ICF reactor cavity design. Because of the cavity phenomena, the forms of energy released by the fuel-pellet microexplosion are modified before reaching the first wall, thus giving rise to different cavity design problems. The types of cavity phenomena encountered in the conceptual design of ICF reactors are examined, the approaches available for their modeling and analysis are discussed, and some results are presented. Most phenomena are sufficiently well understood to permit valid engineering assessments of the proposed ICF reactor concepts.

Book excerpt: This report describes models and analyses devised at Los Alamos National Laboratory to determine the technical characteristics of different inertial confinement fusion (ICF) reactor elements required for component integration into a functional unit. We emphasize the generic properties of the different elements rather than specific designs. The topics discussed are general ICF reactor design considerations; reactor cavity phenomena, including the restoration of interpulse ambient conditions; first-wall temperature increases and material losses; reactor neutronics and hydrodynamic blanket response to neutron energy deposition; and analyses of loads and stresses in the reactor vessel walls, including remarks about the generation and propagation of very short wavelength stress waves. A discussion of analytic approaches useful in integrations and optimizations of ICF reactor systems concludes the report.

Book excerpt: Approximate analytic models are used to explore relations among technical and economic characteristics of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) facilities. Presented are attainable pulse rates for different reactor cavities and dependencies of the unit production cost of electricity on ICF driver pulse energy and repetition rate and on the facility size and the performance of the driver-pellet combination. The results indicate that economic electricity production with ICF reactors may require repetition rates of approx. 15 Hz or 20 Hz but that it may be achieved with values of the driver efficiency-pellet gain product as low as approx. 3 or 4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfer of energy produced by the interaction of the intense pulses of short-ranged fusion microexplosion products with materials is one of the most difficult problems in inertially-confined fusion (ICF) reactor design. The short time and deposition distance for the energy results in local peak power densities on the order of 1018 watts/m3. High local power densities may cause change of state or spall in the reactor materials. This will limit the structure lifetimes for ICF reactors of economic physical sizes, increasing operating costs including structure replacement and radioactive waste management. Four basic first wall protection methods have evolved: a dry-wall, a wet-wall, a magnetically shielded wall, and a fluid wall. These approaches are distinguished by the way the reactor wall interfaces with fusion debris as well as the way the ambient cavity conditions modify the fusion energy forms and spectra at the first wall. Each of these approaches requires different heat transfer considerations.

This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential for using fusion energy to produce commercial electric power was first explored in the 1950s. Harnessing fusion energy offers the prospect of a nearly carbon-free energy source with a virtually unlimited supply of fuel. Unlike nuclear fission plants, appropriately designed fusion power plants would not produce the large amounts of high-level nuclear waste that requires long-term disposal. Due to these prospects, many nations have initiated research and development (R&D) programs aimed at developing fusion as an energy source. Two R&D approaches are being explored: magnetic fusion energy (MFE) and inertial fusion energy (IFE). An Assessment of the Prospects for Inertial Fusion Energy describes and assesses the current status of IFE research in the United States; compares the various technical approaches to IFE; and identifies the scientific and engineering challenges associated with developing inertial confinement fusion (ICF) in particular as an energy source. It also provides guidance on an R&D roadmap at the conceptual level for a national program focusing on the design and construction of an inertial fusion energy demonstration plant.

Book excerpt: "Direct laser-driven fusion uses multiple laser beams to symmetrically illuminate a frozen deuterium-tritium shell. The motive is to produce a hot confined central plasma - the core - which would initiate fusion reactions and lead to self-heating by alpha particle energy deposition. The OMEGA laser produces ~25-30 kJ of on-target energy, approximately 1.4% of the energy available on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Currently, the NIF is not configured to perform symmetric illumination while the 60 beam OMEGA routinely irradiates targets symmetrically. To help motivate NIF to explore direct drive targets in a future symmetric illumination configuration, OMEGA experimental results and their scaling provide a valuable and cost-effective tool. This theoretical and numerical analysis shows that the experiments at the OMEGA [Regan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 025001 (2016)] when hydrodynamically scaled to 1.9 MJ would produce several times the fusion energy output than that achieved with the highest performing indirectly driven targets at NIF [Hurricane et al, Nature 506, 343{348 (2014)]. In order to determine the optimal path to thermonuclear ignition, it is necessary to have a metric to estimate implosion performance and the level of alpha heating. A simple model describing the final stage of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosions and the performance metric is shown. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) produces long- and mid-wavelength distortions of the core, which degrade the implosion performance. A theoretical analysis of the effect of the two types of asymmetries on the implosion hydrodynamics and fusion neutronics is discussed. The experimental observables for the high performing OMEGA implosions were analyzed for investigation of the degradation sources, this is essential for future improvements of the implosion quality. The analysis of several repeats of the cryogenic implosion experiments suggests a systematic degradation mechanism a ecting the implosions. It is found that using a combination of the two types of asymmetries, all of the experimentally observed implosion core conditions could be simultaneously reproduced in simulations. The scaling of the core to NIF required developing a theoretical understanding of the scaling of the deceleration-phase RTI. The scaling of thermal conduction and radiation transport, which mitigate the RTI growth, is shown. It is found that the degradation of implosion performance caused by the RTI is similar for NIF and OMEGA. Using all of these, a general fusion-yield extrapolation procedure has been developed to estimate ICF implosion performance at higher laser energies. The scaling assumes only that the implosion hydrodynamic effciency is unchanged at higher energies, and relies solely on a volumetric scaling of the experimentally observed core conditions. Since the stagnation physics for conventional hot-spot ignition is equivalent for both direct- and indirect-drive, the technique, in general, can be applied to both. Using this, the OMEGA experiments were extrapolated to NIF scale. It is estimated that the current best-performing OMEGA implosion extrapolated to a 1.9 MJ laser driver with the same illumination configuration and laser-target coupling would produce 125 kJ of fusion energy, with similar levels of alpha heating as observed on NIF implosions, but with ~5 times more fusion energy; showing the advantage of direct drive over indirect drive as one approaches the burning plasma regime. Correction of the systematic degradation in the OMEGA implosions - by improving either the low- or mid-mode symmetry - can produce conditions for a burning plasma when scaled to NIF energies."--Pages xi-xiv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis addresses the critical issue of the final transport of a heavy ion beam in an inertial confinement fusion reactor. The beam must traverse the reaction chamber from the final focusing lens to the target without being disrupted. This requirement has a strong impact on the reactor design. It is essential to the development of ICF fusion reactor technology, that the restrictions placed on the reactor engineering parameters by final beam transport consideration be understood early on.
