We assume that agents care about the expected payoff differences among themselves over all periods of a game, so that it is in fact a dynamic game that is being played. In such a game, not only do inequity-averse agents cooperate on equal and nearly efficient levels of contribution to the public goods, but also could selfish agents make active contributions. These results are robust to asymmetric information about agents' types. Our findings also correspond to the end-game effect, the restart effect and a pulsing behavior that are often observed in experiments.

In this research, we use the model of inequity aversion [Fehr and Schmidt, 1999] to predict how inequity induced through mandated contributions influences voluntary contribution behavior in a threshold public good game. Contrary to the model's predictions, we find that inequity induced through mandates does not have a significant effect on individual contribution behavior; rather individuals tend to contribute equal absolute amounts to the public good. Regardless of the predictability of the Fehr and Schmidt [1999] model, we do find that mandates significantly decrease the voluntary provision of the public good, compared to a traditional threshold public good game. The results of this research illustrate the impacts of mandates on voluntary contribution behavior, as well as the behavioral implications of inequity in the provision of public goods..

Standard economic theory did not give much credit to the role of networks until the early 1990s, but since then the study of the theory of networks has blossomed. At the heart of this research is the idea that the pattern of connections between individual rational agents shapes their actions and determines their rewards. The importance of connections has in turn motivated the study of the very processes by which networks are formed. In Connections, Sanjeev Goyal puts contemporary thinking about networks and economic activity into context. He develops a general framework within which this body of research can be located. In the first part of the book he demonstrates that location in a network has significant effects on individual rewards and that, given this, it is natural that individuals will seek to form connections to move the network in their favor. This idea motivates the second part of the book, which develops a general theory of network formation founded on individual incentives. Goyal assesses the robustness of current research findings and identifies the substantive open questions. Written in a style that combines simple examples with formal models and complete mathematical proofs, Connections is a concise and self-contained treatment of the economic theory of networks, one that should become the natural source of reference for graduate students in economics and related disciplines.

The evidence rejects the hypothesis that early players believe that their opponents are inequality averse and also rejects the hypothesis that early players are concerned with security. As a result, less able agents may benefit from initially disadvantageous inequality. Moreover, the more inequity averse the agents, the more inequality should be imposed even by an egalitarian social planner.

Fehr and Schmidt (1999) show that in public good games conditional cooperation among rational players is feasible if cooperators are sufficiently inequality averse and if there are not too many free riders. The derived equilibria are characterized by cooperators who all choose the same above minimum contribution level (symmetric cooperation). We generalize this result by showing, first, that there exist equilibria in which cooperators choose different above minimum contribution levels and, second, that there exist equilibria with three or more different contribution levels. We refer to these as equilibria with "asymmetric cooperation" in contrast to the symmetric equilibria in which all cooperators choose the same contribution level.
