Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in the dynamics of economic activities since the last decades of the 20th century have yielded major changes in the composition of industries and the division of labor and production across different regions of the world. Despite these shifts in the global economy, some industries have remained competitive even without relocating their operations overseas. Industries and Global Competition examines how and why the specificities of certain industries and firms determined their choice of location and competitiveness. This volume identifies the major drivers of this process and explains why some firms and industries moved to other parts of world while others did not. Relocation was not the sole determinant of the success or failure of firms and industries. Indeed some were able to reinvent themselves at their original location and build new competitive advantages. The path that each industry or firm took varied. This book argues that the specific characteristics of each industry defined the conditions of competitiveness and provide a wide range of cases as illustrations. Aimed at scholars, researchers and acadmeics in the fields of business history, international business and related disciplines Industries and Global Competition exmaines the unique questions; How and why did the specificities of certain industries and firms determine their choice of location and competitiveness? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing technology and globalization are two of the main concerns facing companies today. This book argues that the success of firms such as Ericsson and Nokia is a function of how they have managed these two areas simultaneously. The author summarises the development of the global mobile communications industry to date, examining how global standards have been established, and why particular firms have succeeded within these standards. He goes on to examine the factors that will determine the market leaders in third-generation mobile communications systems and phones, and shows how other high technology industries can benefit from the strategies used.
Book Synopsis Global Competition Policy by : Edward Montgomery Graham
Download or read book Global Competition Policy written by Edward Montgomery Graham and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 1997 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing consensus among international trade negotiators and policymakers that a prime area for future multilateral discussion is competition policy. Competition policy includes antitrust policy (including merger regulation and control) but is often extended to include international trade measures and other policies that affect the structure, conduct, and performance of individual industries. This study includes country studies of competition policy in Western Europe, North America, and the Far East (with a focus on Japan) in the light of increasingly globalized activities of business firms. Areas where there are major differences in philosophy, policy, or practice are identified, with emphasis on those differences that could lead to economic costs and international friction. Alternatives for eliminating these costs and frictions are discussed, including unilateral policy changes, bilateral or multilateral harmonization of policies, and creation of new international regimes to supplement or replace national or regional regimes.

Book Synopsis Manufacturing Time by : Amy Glasmeier
Download or read book Manufacturing Time written by Amy Glasmeier and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2000-08-10 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the large-scale manufacture of personal timepieces began, industry leadership has shifted among widely disparate locations, production systems, and cultures. This book recounts the story of the quest for supremacy in the manufacture of watches--from the cottage industries of Britain; to the preeminence of Switzerland and, later, the United States; to the high-tech plants of Japan and the sweatshops of Hong Kong. Glasmeier examines both the strategies adopted by specific firms and the interplay of such varying influences as technological change, cyclical economic downturns, war, and national trade policies. In so doing, she delineates a cohesive framework within which to address such broader questions as how sustained regional economic development takes place (or starts and then stops); how decisions made by corporations are structured by internal and external forces; and the ways industrial cultures with different strategic learning capabilities facilitate or thwart the pursuit of technological change.

Book Synopsis Competition in the Open Economy by : Richard E. Caves
Download or read book Competition in the Open Economy written by Richard E. Caves and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the nations of the world becoming more interdependent, it is imperative to take international influences into account in understanding the organization of industry within a country. This book extends the structure/conduct/performance framework of analysis to present a fully specified simultaneous equation model of an open economy--Canada. By estimating a system of equations of all the major variables, the authors can identify which variables are dependent and which are independent. They are thus able to assess the relative importance of such factors as seller concentration, import competition, retailing structure, advertising expenditure, research and development spending, and technical and allocative efficiency in shaping the organization of industry in Canada. In addition, using both industry-level and firm-level data, the authors develop methods for assessing the effect of structural variables on diversification strategies and the consequences for market performance. They also study the effects of such variables on firms' access to capital markets. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings for government policy.
Book Synopsis Global Competitive Strategy by : Daniel F. Spulber
Download or read book Global Competitive Strategy written by Daniel F. Spulber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization has fundamentally changed the game of business. Strategic frameworks developed for the analysis of purely domestic business necessarily fall short in the international business context. Managers and business students require alternative approaches to understand and cope with these far-reaching changes. We must learn to think globally in order to succeed. Global Competitive Strategy shows how we can do this by providing a unique set of strategic tools for international business. Such tools include the 'star analysis' that allows strategy makers to integrate geographic information with market information about the global business environment. Also introduced is the 'global value connection' that shows managers how to account for the gains from trade and the costs of trade. Aimed at MBA students taking courses in international strategy, consultants and practising managers with responsibility for strategic development, this 2007 book offers a comprehensive strategic framework for gaining competitive advantage in the global marketplace.
Book Synopsis What is the Impact of Increased Business Competition? by : Sónia Félix
Download or read book What is the Impact of Increased Business Competition? written by Sónia Félix and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the macroeconomic effect and underlying firm-level transmission channels of a reduction in business entry costs. We provide novel evidence on the response of firms' entry, exit, and employment decisions. To do so, we use as a natural experiment a reform in Portugal that reduced entry time and costs. Using the staggered implementation of the policy across the Portuguese municipalities, we find that the reform increased local entry and employment by, respectively, 25% and 4.8% per year in its first four years of implementation. Moreover, around 60% of the increase in employment came from incumbent firms expanding their size, with most of the rise occurring among the most productive firms. Standard models of firm dynamics, which assume a constant elasticity of substitution, are inconsistent with the expansionary and heterogeneous response across incumbent firms. We show that in a model with heterogeneous firms and variable markups the most productive firms face a lower demand elasticity and expand their employment in response to increased entry.
Book Synopsis Local Industrial Clusters by : Thomas Brenner

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book establishes a mathematical model is to analyse the dynamics of clustering and the conditions that are to be satisfied if a local industrial cluster is to evolve. This model allows predictions about the spatial distribution of firms to be deducted, which are empirically tested in the book. This thorough methodology allows the author to study the existence of local industrial clusters in Germany, their stability and the industrial characteristics that are responsible for their existence." "Local Industrial Clusters will be a valuable read for policy-makers as well as academics."--Jacket.
