Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen essays in this collection are organized around five themes. The first group is concerned with the pricing implications of recent developments in the theory of the firm. The subject of the second group is wage-price guidelines, in theory and practice. The third set deals with pricing in regulated industries, with special attention to marginal cost pricing. Marketing models and empirical studies of pricing behavior are considered in the fourth set of essays. And the final group, closely related to this, deals with the rationality properties of business pricing decisions and the implications of pricing practices for antitrust enforcement. If a common view on pricing emerges from these provocative and timely papers; it is that an eclectic approach to pricing theories, policies, and practices appears at this stage to be appropriate, since neither neoclassical theory nor recent amendments, extensions, or alternatives to it appear individually rich enough to embrace the full range of variety that pricing behavior affords.

Book excerpt: This paper develops a model of political regulation in which politicians set the regulated price in order to maximize electoral support by signaling to voters a pro-consumer behavior. Political incentives and welfare constraints interact in the model, yielding an equilibrium in which the real price in a regulated industry may fall in periods immediately preceding an election. The paper also provides empirical support for the theoretical model. Using quarterly data from 32 industrial and developing countries over 1978-2004, we find strong statistical and econometric evidence pointing toward the existence of electoral price cycles in gasoline markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foundation of Complex Evolving Systems seeks to offer an integrated analysis of the anatomy and physiology of the capitalist engine of generation and exploitation of technological organizational and institutional innovations - from the drivers of knowledge accumulation, to the modes in which such knowledge is incorporated into business firms, all the way to the processes of innovation-driven "Schumpeterian competition" and macroeconomic growth. In that, it advances the interpretation of such patterns, in terms of economies seen as complex evolving systems. The basic objects of analysis are the history of the emergence and development of modern capitalist economies and their current functionings. Indeed , the tall ambition of the book is to address two basic questions at the core of the whole economic discipline since its inception. They regard, first, the drivers and patterns of change of the capitalistic machine of production and innovation and, second, the mechanisms of coordination among a multitude of self-seeking economic agents often characterized by conflicting interests. In order to do that, this Manual, in addition to the nature of technology and innovation, considers from a profoundly alternative perspective, all domains of analysis typically addressed (or not) by microeconomic texts, including micro behaviours, the theory of the firm, the theory of production, consumption patterns, market dynamics, and industrial evolution.

Book excerpt: Economics: Private and Public Choice, Second Edition deals with modern Keynesian theory, monetarist theory, collective decision-making, and the traditional demand-side of macroeconomics. The book explains economic principles, such as taxation, government expenditure, public choice theory, rate of employment, aggregate supply, fiscal policy, low productivity, inflation, and adaptive expectation hypothesis. The text also covers microeconomics, particularly, capital interest, profits, energy market, and the indifference curve analysis. The book discusses inequality, income mobility, and the battle against poverty where a market system can encourage the careful use of resources, high productivity, and freedom of choice for individuals to bear the costs and reap the benefits. The text points out that income redistribution can result in some conflicts. As an example, the book analyzes income inequality in the United Sates, income inequality in other countries, as well as its causes. The book also describes the characteristics of less developed countries as having low per capita income, dominance of agriculture-household sector, rapid population growth, income that is more unequally distributed, including inadequate health care and education. The book is suitable for economists, sociologists, and policy makers involved in national economic development.

It is a rapidly developing field in which many new research advances have been made in recent years. The book was written in honour of Basil Yamey by his former research students.
