Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Keeping as an Industry for Farmers and Cottagers Poultry keeping is a pursuit which recommends itself very strongly indeed to the small farmer and cottager, in that the outlay of capital required is very little in deed, and the returns are quickly arrived at. Chickens bred for the table can be marketed within a few weeks those intended as layers will commence operations by the time they are five months old. Only in one or two other branches of farming can the same rapid return be secured. There need be no outlay for rent, and, except upon large farms, where a special poultry woman is kept, wages do not enter into consideration. It is, in fact, one of those pursuits which can be engrafted upon the regular operations with very little additional outlay But there is a further benefit to be derived. F owls play an important part in cleaning and enriching land upon which they are kept, and in the following chapters evidences of this are given. If the example shown by vine growers in France were followed, and every fruit grower maintained a flock of poultry, large or small according to his occupation, his profits would be added to considerably, his land would be cleaned by the fowls, their manure would improve his creps, and their produce would be a welcome addition to his income. We are strongly of Opinion that every fruit grower should also be a poultry keeper. The same applies to dairy farms. In Devon and Cornwall nearly every dairy farmer keeps poultry, and in his contracts bar gains for delivering so much butter and so many eggs. As a rule he declines to sell'one without the other. Milk or butter and eggs are bought together, and ought to be produced on the same place, and equal care should be taken to market one as fresh as the other. The dairy farmer has a great advantage in that his connections enable him to find a sure and constant outlet for his eggs, with a minimum of trouble. Whilst to some extent attention has been paid to improvement of breeds, and just as we are going to press an announcement is made that the Congested Districts Board of Ireland has granted 100 and the Royal Dublin Society 50 for the purchase of stock birds to be distributed in the West of Ireland, the equally important details as to preparation of and mar keting poultry, and the collection, sorting, packing and marketing of eggs, have, as a rule, been dealt with in a most haphazard fashion. It is true that in Sussex, in Buckinghamshire, and Norfolk, so far as poultry are concerned, the trade is conducted on systematic lines. In these counties may be found examples of what can be done by method and enterprise, examples which ought to stimulate the efforts of breeders and dealers in all parts of the country. But in Britain we cannot point to any district where a system of collecting and marketing eggs has been adopted at all approaching that met with in France and other continental coun tries, except in Devon and Cornwall. Last spring we made an enquiry into this question in Yorkshire, and learnt that, with a practically unlimited demand on the one side, and a specially favourable district for poultry keeping on the other, the York and Malton districts are dependent on foreign supplies during a large por tion of the year. A trader in York informed us that he sells about eggs per week, but, excepting the first three or four months of each year, he has to obtain Irish, French and Danish eggs to supply his needs. What is true there applies to many other sec tions of the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Breeding and Management The remarkable development of poultry culture during the past two decades is one of the outstanding features of American agriculture. Twenty years ago the possibilities of poultry-keeping as an industry were scarcely dreamed of. While it does not yet receive the consideration it deserves - far from it - nevertheless it has made immense gains both in popular recognition and in production. This has been brought about by a better realization of the pro ductive value of the hen. The idea of fuss and feathers, long associated with the keeping of fowls, has gradually given way to the idea of a poultry industry whose first and only business, as an industry, is the production of eggs and meat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of Poultry Keeping If these five things are realized in a poultry house the birds will thrive and be productive in it, provided they are well and regularly fed and watered. It makes no difference particularly to the well - being of the birds how these necessary specifications of their dwelling are attained. To the poultryman, however. It is important that they be attained at the smallest expense, hav ing regard to (a) initial cost. (b) repairs and up - keep and (cl labor necessary to operate the house to get the specified results The housing problem is to the poultryman, then. Both a biologi cal and an economic one. The biological solution is definite. The requisites named above must be met, and there is one addi tional factor to be taken into account: namely size of house. Experiments made at various times and places indicate clearly that in northern climates, where birds must be shut up in the house during a part, of the Year in order to give best results. There should be allowed in the house at least three square feet of floor space per bird and preferably a little more. Four square feet floor space per bird is a liberal allowance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry and Eggs for Market and Export This pamphlet is intended as a handy guide for farmers and others in practical methods of poultry-keeping. It is only in recent years that much attention has been given in New Zealand to poultry-rearing on a large scale, and it is not always recognised that a good deal of know ledge, as well as industry, is required to insure success. It is the desire of the writer to supply this knowledge and prevent beginners from falling into the mistakes which are often made and from spending money unnecessarily. Since the work of instruction was undertaken by the Government there has been a great improvement in the class of poultry kept by farmers, in the methods practised, and in the production of table-poultry and eggs. There is room for much further improvement, and in this direction the officers of the Poultry Division of the Depart ment of Agriculture are always willing to assist with information and advice. The results will depend, as in all business undertakings, upon the skill, industry, and business capacity of those engaged in it. With good management poultry-keeping will give steady cash returns at an early period after embarking in the enterprise, and no other class of stock will give so much profit on the capital invested as poultry will. Poultry-keeping should go hand-in-hand with dairying, also with fruit growing and bee-culture. In addition to their direct profit, poultry are valuable on the farm in enriching the soil or restoring impoverished soil to a fertile condition; in the orchard they search for and devour insects of all kinds, and not a grub will escape them. Poultry-keeping is full of details: attend to these and success will follow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Poultry Poultry Keeping Suited to ail - Poultry keeping is one of the most valuable industries carried on in connection with every well-con ducted farm or rural home. The money-making possibilities of poultry farms may be in doubt, but hens can be made pay on even the poorest farm in the Province. Probably no class of live stock is so widely scattered and universally reared. From the warmest regions of the tropics to the cold, bleak regions of the Yukon, man demands eggs as one Of the staple articles necessary to sustain life. Fresh eggs are pre ferred, therefore the hen has been introduced, and poultry has become adapted and acclimatized to all regions inhabited by civilized man. The flesh of fowls is delicious and nutritious; and eggs, one of the most per fect of human foods, are being used more and more. In former times poultry keeping was, and in many places is yet, a side issue, a mere incident to general farming, its responsibilities and cares falling on the overworked housewife or some of the very small chil dren. The fowls gathered their own subsistence, stole their nests, brought forth a few chickens, which lived or died according to conditions. The poultry was compelled to roost in the trees, on the fences, or perchance in the barn. About the only care given was to occasionally throw them a little food. Poultry is kept on all farms. But it is evident that the importance of keeping poultry is greater for the small than for the large farms, as the former lack other sources of income. It is, and purposely so. It is designed first and last for the amateur who has no time or inclination to read technical and semi-tech nical books on poultry keeping. It aims to tell the man with a few hens what to do and how to do it. There are certain statements with which some poul try keepers will disagree. We may look for the millennium when the men who keep hens come to be of one mind as to the management of them. However, no pet theory has been put forward or new system advocated. What has been written is based largely on personal experience and what has been learned in visits to many poultry plants, large and small, in different parts of the country. It is sent out with the hope that some amateurs may find in it a suggestion or two which will help them to get more eggs with less expense and have more fun doing it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Profitable Poultry Production Poultry production is commonly practiced on every farm, but profitable poultry production so far as the farm is concerned, is rare indeed. No one, as a rule, has better natural conditions for poultry raising than has the farmer. It is only a matter of embracing opportunities that is wanting. This book. Profitable Poultry Production, is written to present the case fairly and squarely so the farmer may see the advantages that poultry offers as a means of making money. The book lays special emphasis upon all the important practices and new wrinkles that have been found profitable by professional breeders and poultry-men. It shows how these can be easily applied by any one and what may be expected in the way of results. From cover to cover it is intended as an encouragement and a stimulus to everyone interested in poultry. Not only does it indicate which are the lines likely to be most profitable, but it points out those branches of the business not likely to be remunerative, except under special conditions.
