Book excerpt: Designed to serve as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Mechanical Engineering, this book helps promote student understanding of complex phenomena of vibration technology. The book through clear and concise writing equips students with skills required to use vibration theory in analysis and design of engineering systems and devices. The book also discusses in an exclusive chapter the detrimental effects of industrial noise on human beings, and suggests measures to control noise. The book explains the basic principles and the fundamental concepts of the vibration theory related to the study of conventional vibration phenomena such as free response, response to harmonic excitation, general forced response, non-linear analysis, self-excited oscillations, random time functions, and torsional vibration. Besides, it discusses the vibration measuring instruments used for testing in various engineering applications. The book features a wealth of excellent worked-out examples of practical applications, and a host of challenging problems at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: Noise and Vibration affects all kinds of engineering structures, and is fast becoming an integral part of engineering courses at universities and colleges around the world. In this second edition, Michael Norton's classic text has been extensively updated to take into account recent developments in the field. Much of the new material has been provided by Denis Karczub, who joins Michael as second author for this edition. This book treats both noise and vibration in a single volume, with particular emphasis on wave-mode duality and interactions between sound waves and solid structures. There are numerous case studies, test cases, and examples for students to work through. The book is primarily intended as a textbook for senior level undergraduate and graduate courses, but is also a valuable reference for researchers and professionals looking to gain an overview of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damage from noise exposure of sufficient intensity and duration is well established and hearing loss may be temporary or permanent. Fortunately, noise exposure can be controlled and technology exists to reduce the hazards. Aside from employer/employee concern with the inherent hazards of noise, added attention has been brought to focus on the subject through regulatory requirements. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) every employer is legally responsible for providing a workplace free of hazards such as excessive noise. It has been estimated that 14 million US workers are exposed to hazardous noise. This book is presented as an overview summary for employers, workers, and supervisors interested in workplace noise and its control. We believe that in order to understand and control noise it is not necessary to be highly technical. Noise problems can quite often be solved by the people who are directly affected. Presented is an overview of noise, the regulations concerning its control, an explanation of specific principles, and a discussion of some particular techniques.

Book excerpt: Environmental Noise Pollution, Second Edition, addresses the key debates surrounding environmental noise pollution, its modelling and mitigation using examples from across the globe. Environmental noise pollution is now an established concern in environmental and public policy and is considered one of the most important environmental stressors affecting public health throughout the world. Thoroughly revised, this new edition includes updated global case studies as well as new chapters on ‘soundscapes and noise mapping’ and ‘environmental noise and technology’.This book examines environmental noise pollution, its health implications, noise modelling, the role of strategic noise mapping for problem assessment, major sources of environmental noise pollution, noise mitigation approaches, and related procedural and policy implications. Drawing on the authors’ considerable research expertise in the area, the book is a fully updated resource on this major environmental stressor that crosses disciplinary, policy and national boundaries. Highlights recent developments in the policy arena, with a particular focus on global developments in environmental noise management and mitigation Explores the lessons emerging from nations within the EU and other jurisdictions attempting to legislate and mitigate against the harmful effects of noise pollution Covers the core theoretical concepts and principles surrounding the mechanics of noise pollution as well as evidence linking noise with public health concerns Thoroughly revised throughout, with more global examples and two new chapters on technology and noise and soundscapes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an updated and revised version of a book published by RAPRA in 1985 'Noise in the Plastics Processing Industry'. The original version provided guidance to managers and engineers in the plastics industry on ways to reduce high noise levels in the workplace, in order to reduce risk of noise induced hearing damage to employees. Practical methods for reducing noise from industrial machinery in general were described and then illustrated with 25 case studies all relating to plastics processing machines such a granulators, shredders, extruders and injection moulders.Noise control techniques described include standard noise control measures such as enclosures, silencers and the use of sound insulating, sound absorbing materials, use of vibration isolation and damping. Most of these techniques have not changed since 1985, however one new technique is now available - the use of active noise control methods. The scope of the revised text has been extended to include chapters on environmental noise, European Union machinery noise emission regulations, hearing protection and prediction of noise levels, and the design of quieter workplaces.A new chapter of case studies has been added which reviews many already published case studies and introduces some new ones.
