Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the technology of inspection of metals, the main emphasis on final part inspection at the manufacturing facility or on receipt at the user's facility. The unique feature of this book is that it provides an intermediate level introduction to the different methods used to inspect metals and finished parts and a more detailed review of the specific inspection methods for important metal product forms. The book is divided into two parts: Part I gives the basics of the most important methods used for inspection and testing, while Part II covers the types of methods used to inspect different classes of metallic parts. The advantages and limitations of each method are discussed, including when other methods may be warranted. In particular, the chapters on specific product forms (e.g., castings) compare the different inspection methods and why they are used.

This book, Industrial Ultrasonic Inspection, is designed to meet and exceed ISO 9712 training requirements for Level 1 and Level 2 certification. The material presented in this book will provide readers with all the basic knowledge of the theory behind elastic wave propagation and its uses with the use of easy to read text and clear pictorial descriptions. Discussed UT concepts include: - General engineering, materials, and components theory - Theory of sound waves and their propagation - The general uses of ultrasonic waves - Comprehensive lab section - Methods of ultrasonic wave generation - Different ultrasonic inspection techniques - Ultrasonic flaw detectors, scanning systems, and probes - Calibration fundamentals - General scanning techniques - Flaw sizing techniques - Basic analysis for ultrasonic, phased array ultrasonic, and time of flight diffraction inspection techniques - Codes and standards - Principles of technical documentation and reporting It is my intention that this book is used for general training purposes. It is the ideal classroom textbook. -Ryan Chaplin

Book excerpt: Over the years inspection technology has evolved as a major area of study due to the exponential growth of industrial system technology that has brought new dimensions to the engineering field. Almost every developed industries depends on inspection technology for better productivity. The approach followed in preparation of this book is lucid and elementary. There are many modern industrial approaches end of each section. This book addresses inspection theory and analysis in the context of an overall effort to achieve quality. It is designed for use as a primary book as a supplementary text in a material/mechanical/Industrial engineering course, and as a resource for academic and practical approach. The main characteristics of this book are: -It assumes that the reader's goal is to achieve a suitable balance of cost, schedule, and quality. It is not oriented toward critical systems. -It presents modern optimization techniques suitable for near-term application, with sufficient technical background to understand their domain of applicability and to consider variations to suit technical and organizational constraints.

Book excerpt: Measurement and inspection technology are important parts of manufacturing industry today. They provide important feedbacks to modern control systems, detect failures and flaws either online or offline, and hence enhance boost the productivity and improve the quality of final products. The continued development and evolution of measurement principles and systems have produced increasingly precise and reliable results. Published literature and industry practice show that better measurement results usually require both a "ruler" of finer scales and a better method to make more stable readings; however, these are bottlenecks in developing new methods and improving existing systems. In this thesis a probability-based method (PBM) for length measurement is proposed which produces measurement results more accurate than the physical scales on the "ruler". As a natural extension to the classic approach, this measurement model uses probability readings as indicators and evaluates the measurands. Around this method, a theory is established and proven for various levels of priori knowledge. Following this, real-world obstacles in implementation and practice usage of PBM are considered. For example, mis-alignments which not only cause trigonometric errors but also induce a discrete random behavior on the measurand, sources of sampling randomness consisting of synthetic parts and those from random errors, and impacts of laboratory gantry systems are fully investigated. A validation process is conducted using existing hardware with newly developed software. Multiple tests are conducted. The experiment results confirmed the validity of PBM and therefore shows that this method will make a positive contribution to the industrial inspection.
