In the book Industrial Chic, Brigitte Durieux, one of the most well-known experts on the style, tells us the story behind 50 European and American objects that have made the surprising transition from factories to our living rooms and become cult furniture. The remarkable histories of these 50 significant objects--including the Gras lamp, the Singer stool, the Holophane reflector, the Brilli clock, and more--accompany brilliant photographs by Laziz Hamani. Featuring more than 250 images, Industrial Chic is a beautifully illustrated showcase that reveals the incredible reach, versatility, and long-lasting appeal of industrial design. Praise for Industrial Chic: "Large, lush photographs.... [A] luxe treasury for design and furniture lovers alike." --American Craft magazine

Book excerpt: To this day, some of the furniture used in factories and other industrial facilities was made by the workers and mechanics themselves for particular purposes and activities, and adapted to highly specialized production processes. In their strict orientation towards functionality, these simple and utilitarian pieces of industrial furniture, which usually feature screwed together or welded iron plates, sheet metal, steel pipes and wooden boards, differ from the typical smooth, uniform aesthetics of contemporary designer furniture.Since the 1970s, industrial furniture has increasingly been used in private living quarters, particularly in the furnishing of lofts and big-city apartments. But even if this furniture has long been valued and collected by connoisseurs and will sometimes even fetch high prices, it so far represents a hitherto entirely neglected phenomenon of art and design history. This is the first catalogue devoted to this barely recognized phenomenon of design history and accompanies the exhibition at MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art, Vienna, May – October. 2011.English and German text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American labor unions resemble private representative democracies, complete with formally constituted conventions and officer election procedures. Like other democratic institutions, unions have repeatedly experienced highly charged conflicts over the integration of ethnic minorities and women into leadership positions. In Becoming a Mighty Voice, Daniel B. Cornfield traces the 55-year history of the United Furniture Workers of America (UFWA), describing the emergence of new social groups into union leadership and the conditions that encouraged or inhibited those changes. This vivid case history explores leadership change during eras of union growth, stability, and decline, not simply during isolated episodes of factionalism. Cornfield demonstrates that despite the strong forces perpetuating existing union hierarchies, leadership turnover is just as likely as leadership stagnation. He also shows that factors external to the union may influence leadership change; periods of turnover in the UFWA leadership reflected employer efforts to find cheap, non-union labor, as well as union efforts to unionize workers. When unions are threatened by intensified conflict with employers and when entrenched high status groups within the union are obliged to recruit members of lower socioeconomic status, then new social groups are likely to be integrated into union leadership. Becoming a Mighty Voice develops a theory of leadership change that will be of interest to many engaged in the labor, civil rights, and women's movements as well as to sociologists or historians of work, gender, and race, and to students of political and organizational behavior.

Using robust empirical material this book offers a multidisciplinary, comprehensive overview, critique and extension of long-established theories underpinning patterns of firm (re)location. It explores dominant trends in the mobility and relocation of industries and firms, examines the factors guiding such trends and evaluates their consequences in both developed and emerging economies in Europe, Asia and Latin America. This book will be appreciated by diverse audiences. Geography and regional science researchers of ‘economic activity location’ can engage with the critical appraisal of key theoretical concepts and an analysis of recent empirical data. Students of human and economic geography, planning, regional development, and global supply chain management in senior years of undergraduate programmes and completing postgraduate degrees will appreciate the accessible language, multiple examples and graphical illustrations of theoretical frameworks underpinning location and relocation of firms and industries, and its consequences. Practitioners, including local and regional policy makers and location consultants will enjoy the comparative discussion of solutions and practices adopted in localities, regions and countries as diverse as China, Brazil, The Netherlands and Poland.
