Book excerpt: AIR QUALITY MONITORING AND CONTROL STRATEGY essentially deals with air quality and underlines a strategy to improve it. To this effect this volume describes briefly the problem of air pollution, impact of various pollutants present in the indoor/outdoor atmosphere on health, the various monitoring techniques/instruments and their practical use, instructions, precautions etc., control instrumentation and environment impact assessment. The answer to questions like the need for air quality monitoring, choice of monitoring location and parameters, averaging time and frequencies etc. has been provided along with the basic statistics required to work out certain statistical figures in air quality. The science of meteorology, an important subject that takes care of dispersion/dilution of air pollutants at a place, has been discussed briefly. A chapter on noise pollution, another vital air toxicant, has also been dealt with to a certain limit. Two case studies have been incorporated to elucidate the importance of EIA and the need to develop a strategy for management of ambient air quality. Revised new standards have also been included.

The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.

Book excerpt: With all the emphasis on atmospheric air pollution and efforts to control it, we forget that most of us spend much of our lives indoors where air quality is quite different and often much worse than that outdoors. Addresses the recent, rapid expansion of interest in indoor air quality and its contribution to total human exposure to air pollutants by presenting past and present developments and also the directions that the field seems to be taking.

The indoor air pollutants of most concern are radon, formaldehyde, and certain combustion products - nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and various respirable particles. Many techniques exist to control the concentrations of these pollutants and other indoor pollutants that are only now being recognized as significant. The purpose of this book is to provide a current review and evaluation of these control techniques.

Book excerpt: Air quality and air pollution control are tasks of international concern as, for one, air pollutants do not refrain from crossing borders and, for another, industrial plants and motor vehicles which emit air pollutants are in widespread use today. In a number of the world's expanding cities smog situations are a frequent occurrence due to the number and emission-intensity of air pollution sources. Polluted air causes annoy ances and can, when it occurs in high concentrations in these cities, constitute a seri ous health hazard. How important clean air is to life becomes apparent when consid ering the fact that humans can do without food for up to 40 days, without air, how ever, only a few minutes. The first step towards improving the air quality situation is the awareness that a sound environment is as much to be aspired for as the development of new tech nologies improving the standard of living. Technical progress should be judged es pecially by how environmentally benign, clean and noiseless its products are. Of these elements, clean air is of special concern to me. I hope that this book will awaken more interest in this matter and that it will lead to new impulses. Due to the increasing complexity of today's machinery and industrial processes science and technology can no longer do without highly specialized design engineers and opera tors. Environmental processes, however, are highly interdependent and interlinked.

Book excerpt: The monitoring of indoor air pollutants in a spatio-temporal basis is challenging. A key element is the access to local (i.e., indoor residential, workplace, or public building) exposure measurements. Unfortunately, the high cost and complexity of most current air pollutant monitors result in a lack of detailed spatial and temporal resolution. As a result, individuals in vulnerable groups (children, pregnant, elderly, and sick people) have little insight into their personal exposure levels. This becomes significant in cases of hyper-local variations and short-term pollution events such as instant indoor activity (e.g., cooking, smoking, and dust resuspension). Advances in sensor miniaturization have encouraged the development of small, inexpensive devices capable of estimating pollutant concentrations. This new class of sensors presents new possibilities for indoor exposure monitoring. This Special Issue invites research in the areas of the triptych: indoor air pollution monitoring, indoor air modeling, and exposure to indoor air pollution. Topics of interest for the Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following: low-cost sensors for indoor air monitoring; indoor particulate matter and volatile organic compounds; ozone-terpene chemistry; biological agents indoors; source apportionment; exposure assessment; health effects of indoor air pollutants; occupant perception; climate change impacts on indoor air quality.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in indoor air quality (IAQ) is growing at public, political and scientific levels. Complaints about poor IAQ, associated with acute symptoms such as mucous irritation, headaches and bad odor occur frequently, particularly in the office environment, where typical patterns of symptoms often occur, leading to the coining of the term `Sick Building Syndrome'. In the present book, internationally known experts address the following issues: the dynamics of the indoor environment and strategies for indoor measurement chemical and microbiological pollution, important species, sources and detection methods effects of indoor pollution, in particular sensory irritation, including odor airway, eye and skin irritation by organic indoor pollutants and their assessment immune effects, including allergic sensitization chemical hyper-responsiveness controlled human reactions to organic pollutants building investigation: approaches and results source characterization and control criteria, norms and techniques in indoor air pollution, and regulatory aspects. The complex, multifactorial nature of sick building syndrome requires multidisciplinary collaboration from very diverse fields. It is evident that communication between researchers coming from very different areas, all speaking their own language, is a difficult task. This book, presenting as it does the state of the art on sick buildings and how to cure them, is a sound foundation on which to build for the future.
