Book excerpt: Indonesia has the second largest expanse of tropical moist forests in the world: about 78 per cent of its land mass is classified as forest land. These forests are important to Indonesia for their economic and social significance and to the global community for their biodiversity and as a carbon sink. The main pressures on the forests come from logging, degradation from forest concessions and plantations, rural consumption, and forest fires. This case study is one of six evaluations of the implementation of the World Bank's 1991 Forest Strategy.

This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a parent, you want your children to grow up to become self-motivated, financially savvy, contributing members of society who maintain a deeply satisfying adult life. This is why it is essential to “bratproof” your children against turning into spoiled, egotistical materialists who feel entitled to misbehave and take their lives for granted. This book will help you raise emotionally healthy kids who will grow to become mature, well-rounded adults. Protect your children from the potentially negative influences of a life of privilege and blinding effects of America’s abject consumerism by instilling these seven positive character traits: • High self-esteem • Joy and optimism • Serenity • Hard work and thrift • Loving kindness • Forgiveness • Integrity These will help give your children a sense of purpose while providing direction and clarity to their lives. Instead of seeking guidance through wealth or a misplaced notion of superiority, your children will develop a strong “work ethic” centered on selflessness, sacrifice, and ambition. This book offers simple, practical strategies you can integrate into daily parenting to help you effectively raise your child. A vital precept of this work is how to instill an obligation of financial responsibility in your son or daughter, and protecting your wealth from being decimated because they are unprepared for the financial realities of life. The book’s clear-cut analysis of the fundamentals of wealth transfer, discussion of the use of trusts, and detailed instruction regarding how to build a lasting legacy through charitable donations prepares you to discuss these complex topics with your advisors as well as your inheritors.

Book Synopsis The World Bank and the post-Washington Consensus in Vietnam and Indonesia by : Susan Engel
Download or read book The World Bank and the post-Washington Consensus in Vietnam and Indonesia written by Susan Engel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the history, structure and current operations of the World Bank, which despite being the largest development organisation and the largest development research body in the world with tremendous direct and indirect influence on developing economies, has rarely received the critical attention its importance merits. The book’s unique contribution is twofold: it provides an original analysis of the interaction between economic theory, political practice and the Bank’s development praxis as well as two detailed, grounded studies of the Bank’s lending practices. The book starts with a detailed examination of the development theory and practice of the World Bank from its Keynesian origins to the current shift through the Washington Consensus to the so-called post-Washington Consensus. The second part is a detailed analysis of the Bank’s lending practices in two countries, Vietnam and Indonesia. The case studies extensively utilise World Bank sources —analysing the Project Appraisal Documents for some 113 loans. They also draw on the secondary literature and on interviews with World Bank staff, government officials, academics and NGOs in both countries. The case studies enable the development of empirically-based conclusions regarding the impact of Bank policies on the economic and social development of two important Southeast Asian nations making possible an assessment of the extent to which the rhetoric of the post-Washington Consensus has been incorporated into the Bank’s lending practices. This book will be of interest to both advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as specialist audiences in the fields of international political economy, development, international organizations and Southeast Asian Studies.
Book Synopsis IDA's Partnership for Poverty Reduction by : Catherine Gwin
Download or read book IDA's Partnership for Poverty Reduction written by Catherine Gwin and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During its 40-year history, the International Development Association (IDA) has worked to improve global welfare by allocating resources to growth and poverty reduction programs. In 1990, a new framework for IDA's poverty reduction efforts was created which resulted in significant structural change to its programs. The focus of the programs became one of labor-intensive growth and expanded access to social services and safety nets to improve incomes levels among the poor. Additionally, the IDA agenda was expanded to include gender, the environment and governance as facets of the poverty reduction framework. This report evaluates IDA's performance from 1994 through 2000 against the three specific replenishment commitments of the period. While finding the performance level only partially satisfactory, the review suggests ways to improve the effectiveness of IDA programs, replenishment process and its ability to match corporate and country priorities.
Book Synopsis Social Development in Asia by : Kwong-leung Tang
Download or read book Social Development in Asia written by Kwong-leung Tang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Asian countries have shown a strong commitment to rapid economic development. Economists have argued that the fruits from economic development will be spread equitably throughout the population. In the absence of a strong tradition of social rights, social development in Asia has long been taken for granted. This collection documents social development in the Asian countries of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and India and concludes that social development has lagged behind economic development. This has given rise to `distorted development' in many countries. Serious development problems of poverty and inequalities have lingered even in these economically advanced countries of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. These problems have been exacerbated in the wake of the Asian economic crisis. In order to harmonize social development with economic growth, Asian states ought to be more proactive in their development agendas. As a text on social development in Asia, this book is primarily intended for practitioners and students of social work, social administration, and social policy. It is also relevant for students and practitioners of sociology, economics, and public policy.
Book Synopsis Rules of Law and Laws of Ruling by : Franz von Benda-Beckmann
Download or read book Rules of Law and Laws of Ruling written by Franz von Benda-Beckmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering an anthropological perspective, this volume explores the changing relations between law and governance, examining how changes in the structure of governance affect the relative social significance of law within situations of legal pluralism. The authors argue that there has been a re-regulation rather than a de-regulation, propagated by a plurality of regulative authorities and this re-regulation is accompanied by an increasing ideological dominance of rights talk and juridification of conflict. Drawing on insights into such processes, this volume explores the extent to which law is used both as a constitutive legitimation of governance and as the medium through which governance processes take place. Highlighting some of the paradoxes and the unintended consequences of these regulating processes and the ensuing dynamics, Rules of Law and Laws of Ruling will be a valuable resource for researchers and students working in the areas of legal anthropology and governance.

Download or read book International Assistance and State-University Relations written by Jo Bastiaens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the goals, efforts and outcomes of international assistance to higher education over the past three decades and investigates how these have impacted changing State-university relations. Focusing on the case study of Indonesia, Bastiaens demonstrates how international aid facilitated and at times actively encouraged changing patterns of state-university relations from state control towards greater institutional autonomy. Through the use of various case studies from throughout the country and critical analysis of the relationships between international donors and domestic reformers, Bastiaens shows how the educational system of Indonesia was able to diversify resources, generate income, and become increasingly autonomous from government.
