Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, researchers shocked the world by showing that many folktales are not just centuries old, but older than Homer and the Bible. Some tales even trace their origin as far back as the Proto-Indo-Europeans-an astonishing survival of some 6,000 years. Folktales in the Indo-European Tradition is a massive collection of 150 folktales arranged by how far back they can be traced in the Indo-European migrations. This volume includes dozens of colour illustrations by the artist Graman and many tales newly translated into English. In the foreword, we learn how folklore can be one of the most faithful preservatives of Indo-European culture, religion, and even ritual, and how powerful of a tool comparative folkloristics can be in reconstructing the Proto-Indo-European worldview. This volume is an original contribution to the study of folklore and a beautiful treasure to be handed down through the generations, containing some of our people's most ancient stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indo-Europeans, speakers of the prehistoric parent language from which most European and some Asiatic languages are descended, most probably lived on the Eurasian steppes some five or six thousand years ago. Martin West investigates their traditional mythologies, religions, and poetries, and points to elements of common heritage. In The East Face of Helicon (1997), West showed the extent to which Homeric and other early Greek poetry was influenced by Near Eastern traditions, mainly non-Indo-European. His new book presents a foil to that work by identifying elements of more ancient, Indo-European heritage in the Greek material. Topics covered include the status of poets and poetry in Indo-European societies; metre, style, and diction; gods and other supernatural beings, from Father Sky and Mother Earth to the Sun-god and his beautiful daughter, the Thunder-god and other elemental deities, and earthly orders such as Nymphs and Elves; the forms of hymns, prayers, and incantations; conceptions about the world, its origin, mankind, death, and fate; the ideology of fame and of immortalization through poetry; the typology of the king and the hero; the hero as warrior, and the conventions of battle narrative.

Book excerpt: This book examines the figure of the returning warrior as depicted in the myths of several ancient and medieval Indo-European cultures. In these cultures, the returning warrior was often portrayed as a figure rendered dysfunctionally destructive or isolationist by the horrors of combat. This mythic portrayal of the returned warrior is consistent with modern studies of similar behavior among soldiers returning from war. Roger Woodard's research identifies a common origin of these myths in the ancestral proto-Indo-European culture, in which rites were enacted to enable warriors to reintegrate themselves as functional members of society. He also compares the Italic, Indo-Iranian, and Celtic mythic traditions surrounding the warrior, paying particular attention to Roman myth and ritual, notably to the etiologies and rites of the July festivals of the Poplifugia and Nonae Caprotinae, and to the October rites of the Sororium Tigillum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curiosities of Indo-European Tradition and Folk-lore (1863) was historian Walter Keating Kelly's one and only book on mythology, and it sought to popularize for English-speaking audiences the exciting new science of mythology being developed in Germany. The author was particularly taken with German Sanskrit scholar Adalbert Kuhn's idea that the earliest Indo-European myths were associated primarily with thunder and lightning. Today, Keating's book remains the most important and influential English language source for Kuhn's ideas, as his works were not translated into English in his own time. Keating, however, did more than report the German findings; he illustrated and expanded upon them with incidents from English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish lore. Consequently, the Curiosities is a treasure-house of comparative mythology and folklore, recording hundreds of myths and legends, famous and obscure. In these pages are stories of the sun and of storms, of werewolves and the Wild Hunt, of witches and wishing rods. The Curiosities was extremely influential in its time, widely-cited in Victorian scholarship and widely read among both scholars and the general public, who were fascinated by its expert explication of obscure myths and legends. It is widely believed to have been instrumental in stimulating the collection of British folklore, and it remains a foundational text for the study of Indo-European mythology and folklore. This edition is an unabridged republication of the 1863 first edition published by Chapman and Hall.

Book excerpt: Critically examining the discourse of Indo-European scholarship over the past two hundred years, Aryan Idols demonstrates how the interconnected concepts of “Indo-European” and “Aryan” as ethnic categories have been shaped by, and used for, various ideologies. Stefan Arvidsson traces the evolution of the Aryan idea through the nineteenth century—from its roots in Bible-based classifications and William Jones’s discovery of commonalities among Sanskrit, Latin, and Greek to its use by scholars in fields such as archaeology, anthropology, folklore, comparative religion, and history. Along the way, Arvidsson maps out the changing ways in which Aryans were imagined and relates such shifts to social, historical, and political processes. Considering the developments of the twentieth century, Arvidsson focuses on the adoption of Indo-European scholarship (or pseudoscholarship) by the Nazis and by Fascist Catholics. A wide-ranging discussion of the intellectual history of the past two centuries, Aryan Idols links the pervasive idea of the Indo-European people to major scientific, philosophical, and political developments of the times, while raising important questions about the nature of scholarship as well.
