In it, Mill advocates the rights of the individual against Society, with special emphasis to the importance of individuality. The main focus of this book is on nature and the limits of power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual. Among others, Mill examines the questions of whether one or more persons should be able to curtail another person's freedom, to express a divergent point of view and whether there are instances when society can legitimately limit individual liberty. On Liberty remained one of the most read works of the political philosophy to this day. Book excerpt: Individualism is one of the most criticized and least understood ideas in social and political thought. Is Individualism the ability ot act independently amidst a web of social forces? A vital element of personal liberty and a shield against conformity? Does it lead to or away from unifying individuals with communities? Individualism: A Reader provides a wealth of illuminating essays from the 17th to the early 20th centuries. In 26 selections from 25 writers, individualism is explained and defended, often from unusual perspectives. This anthology includes not only selections from well-known writers, but also many lesser-known pieces-reprinted here for the first time-by philosophers, social theorists, and economists who have been overlooked in standard accounts of individualism. Both richly historical and sharply contemporary, Individualism: A Reader provides a multitude of perspectives and insights on personal liberty and the history of freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals and Individuality criticizes Hegel’s theory of dialectic for eliminating the possibility of irreducible individuality. The argument then goes on to defend and expand Peirce’s theory of firstness, secondness, and thirdness as a more nearly adequate account of individuality. The discussion culminates with an interpretation of art as illustrating the essence of individuality. Brian Martine lays a foundation for a more complex discussion of what it means to be individual. This book provides an elegant account of the nature of the individual, without reducing it to a cluster of universals or claiming that it is a bare particular that must be acknowledged but never articulated. Martine gets in between universality and individuality in both a sensitive and responsible fashion.

Book excerpt: Individualism is a school of philosophy that has always held a particular appeal to artists and writers due to its situation of the individual at the core of its beliefs. To artists, the issue of autonomy has always been of the utmost importance because through it, they establish themselves as objective chroniclers and critics of society. This connection between individualism and the artist led Oscar Wilde to state in The Soul of Man under Socialism (1891) that 'Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known. I am inclined to say that it is the only real mode of individualism that the world has known' (142). With this idea in mind, it is worth reconsidering the English artist and writer Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) because prevalent throughout all of his work is a concern for the artist and the issue of maintaining one's autonomy. For Lewis, individualism is a philosophy that encourages uniqueness, and so throughout Lewis's work one can see an evolving personal philosophy, a bringing together of elements from numerous schools of thought, so as to create a personalised philosophy. This thesis charts the evolution of Lewis's individualism, which begins with his strong endorsement of the individual in the avant-garde magazine Blast and an opposition to French philosopher Henri Bergson's time philosophy, which then develops throughout his fictional works "Enemy of the Stars," "The Crowd Master", and ends with his first novel Tarr. It engages but eventually defines itself against German philosopher Max Stirner's philosophy of Egoism and is a philosophy that is couched in French Sociologist Gustave Le Bon's rhetoric of herd opposition, incorporates in elements of Nietzsche's Übermensch; and ends with a philosophy that through its combination of various diverse elements is entirely unique to Lewis.

Book excerpt: Bhargava carefully disentangles the different forms of methodological individualism, and then identifies the key assumptions of its most plausible version that beliefs are attitudes individuated entirely in terms of what lies within the individual mind. He argues that once this assumption is challenged, it is possible to rehabilitate a non-individuated methodology that permits a contextual study of beliefs and desires and even a study of social context relatively independent of the beliefs and desires of individuals.
