Book excerpt: This study investigated effects of fire on vegetation and small mammals in a tallgrass blackland prairie remnant. At Leonhardt Prairie, vegetation and small mammals were monitored from February 2007 through May 2008 with a burn occurring Fall 2007. Pre-burn, dense litter and vegetative cover accommodated two dominant species, Baiomys taylori and Sigmodon hispidus, with a relative abundance (captures/100 trapnights) of 5.85 and 4.99, respectively. Post-burn, removal of vegetation led to an increase of Peromyscus maniculatus from a relative abundance of 0.12 pre-burn to 5.23 post-burn. Baiomys taylori and Sigmodon hispidus were not captured on burned sections for 7 months, though the unburned section maintained capture rates similar to pre-burn data. Shift in species composition has occurred from Baiomys taylori and Sigmodon hispidus to Peromyscus maniculatus, suggesting short-term fire response of small mammals in tallgrass prairies. This secondary successional cycle of 7 months suggests the prairie's natural fire frequency was high.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on papers presented at a 1987 symposium, "Fire in North American Grasslands," cosponsored by the Ecological Society of America and the Botanical Society of America, this book represents an important contribution to key unanswered questions concerning the role of fire in grassland ecosystems: How often did fires occur in the past? Were they primarily natural or caused by humans? At what time of year did grasslands normally burn? How should fire be used as a management tool? What constitutes a proper prescribed burning regime both with and without grazing?

This book was released on 2007 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To assess the interactive effects of prescribed fire on small mammals in these altered ecosystems, we performed a randomized experiment where we applied prescribed fire on 36 of 54 plots. The effects of fire on many small mammal populations and the composition of the small mammal community varied along the invasion gradient, suggesting that fire functions differently in areas dominated by nonnative plants relative to those dominated by native plants. Invasion by this nonnative grass has clearly shifted the composition of faunal communities in semi-desert grasslands and has altered ecosystem processes, therefore reestablishing fire is not likely to be an omnibus solution for restoration.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following decades of fire suppression, many savanna ecosystems have changed drastically to dense forests. Restoration of these ecosystems is seen as a way to reduce woody encroachment, dangerous fuel loads, and loss of biological diversity. The management practices to achieve these goals, thinning and prescribed fire, have the potential to affect small mammal communities. Because small mammals exercise key ecosystem functions, changes in their community structure and in their habitat use through the direct and indirect effects of land management practices should be monitored carefully. The overall goal of this research was to determine the effects of low-basal area (BA) practices (thinning and prescribed fire) on small mammal communities in southeast Oklahoma. First, I determined how low-BA practices altered small mammal habitat. Low-BA practices significantly changed dominant ground covers and reduced litter and duff depths, BA of live trees, and the distance of vulnerability (DOV), a measure of understory vegetation structure and animal vulnerability to terrestrial predators. Overall, my results showed that low-BA practices increased ground layer productivity. Second, I assessed whether low-BA management practices altered the community structure of small mammal species in southeast Oklahoma. I found significant differences between the small mammal communities of thinned stands that were burned frequently (low-BA stands) and stands that were not thinned recently and not burned as frequently (high-BA stands). Significant differences in the capture rates of Peromyscus leucopus were documented and differences in the community assemblage between low- and high-BA stands were recorded. Third, I determined habitat preferences of three common small mammal species in southeast Oklahoma: P. leucopus, P. maniculatus, and R. fulvescens. All species preferentially selected low-BA stands. In low-BA stands, P. leucopus selected sites with higher volumes of coarse woody debris and longer DOV, while P. maniculatus selected sites with shorter DOV. In high-BA stands, P. leucopus selected sites with higher ground cover of down woody debris and longer DOV, while P. maniculatus did not appear to respond to those characteristics. Reithrodontomys fulvescens selected low-BA stands with shorter DOV. Knowing how low-BA practices affect small mammals can inform land managers on how to manage for small mammal diversity.

Download or read book The Effects of Prescribed Burning on Small Mammal Communities in Lava Beds National Monument, California written by Richard Wilmarth Frenzel and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of prescribed burning on the abundance, species composition, and reproduction of small mammals were studied over a one year period. Two burn areas were studied, one in sagebrush/ bunchgrass and one in cheatgrass. The short-term effects were studied using monthly mark-recapture trapping on two treatment and two control areas totaling 9600 trap nights, with 1208 individuals captured 3650 times. The effects of the fires after a one year period were studied by continuous 15 day removal trapping at two burn and two control areas prior to burning and one year later. Removal trapping totaled 30, 000 trap nights with 3994 individuals captured. Results indicated that the number of individuals actually killed in the fires was insignificant. In general, the fires had no major effects on the small mammal communities in terms of species abundance, age and sex ratios, weights and reproductive condition.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small mammals were trapped on an unburned area, a recently burned area and an area burned eight years earlier (further references to the three areas will use the titles control area, new burn area and old burn area.) The study was conducted from Junethrough October 1987, near Berea, Kentucky. Live-trapping data were analyzed to estimate small mammal populations and pitfall trapping data were analyzed to compare species diversity and community similarity among the three areas. Herbacious (1 m), shurb layer (1 m, 3 m), and three layer (3 m) vegetation was sampled and compared among the three areas.

Book Synopsis The Effects of Prescribed Fires in Different Seasons on Small Mammals in a Sierra Nevada Mixed Conifer Forest by : Michelle Erin Monroe

This book was released on 2005 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Prescribed fire is an important management practice used to restore natural fire regimes in Sierra Nevada mixed conifer forests where fire has been suppressed over the last century. It is not well known, however, how the timing of prescribed fire affects wildlife species. I compared the effects of prescribed fires during the early season (spring and early summer) with those during the late season (late summer and fall) on small mammal populations using model selection and inference methods. ... Lodgepole chipmunk (Neotamias speciosus) movements differed between years, but there was no effect of prescribed fires on their movements (Chapter 1). Deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) movements differed between age groups within years. Prescribed fire treatments did not affect deer mouse movements, except when only adult female deer mouse movements were analyzed. Year effects were more important than fire effects on lodgepole chipmunk densities, total small mammal biomass, deer mouse densities, and deer mouse age ratios (Chapter 2). Prescribed burning had a positive effect on deer mouse pregnancy ratios, and there was only limited support for an effect of year on these ratios. There was essentially no support for different effects of fire depending on the season of fire on total small mammal biomass and deer mouse densities, and only limited support for these effects on lodgepole chipmunk densities, deer mouse age ratios, and deer mouse pregnancy ratios. The prescribed fire treatments differentially impacted small mammal habitat components depending on the season of the fire (Chapter 3). However, there were few significant relationships between these habitat components and deer mouse densities, lodgepole chipmunk densities or small mammal species richness. Overall, year effects often had the greatest influence on the small mammal populations examined, and there were few strong differences between the effects of early season fires and late season fires on these populations."--Abstract.
