Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Some Distinguished Indian Women IN her Introduction, Mrs. Chapman expresses some fear lest people in England should begin to weary of the subject of Indian women, so much having been written of late concerning them and their peculiar trials. But this little book needs no apology; and I, for one, have never read anything more interesting or more likely to be useful to the cause of female education in India than this small collection of biographies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India's Women Tell Me simply how proud thou art, how sensitive, egotistical, mean, and indolent; and ask Me to come and help thee in all the efforts thou makest against it. Poor child, do not blush; there are in heaven many saints who had thy faults; they prayed to Me, - and little by little their faults were corrected. Do not hesitate to ask Me for blessings for the body and mind, for health, memory, success. I can give all things, and I always give when blessings are needed to render souls more holy. To-day, what wilt thou have, My child? If thou knewest how I long to do thee good Hast thou plans that occupy thee? Lay them all before Me. Do they concern thy vocation? What dost thou desire? Dost thou wish to give pleasure to thy mother, to thy family, to those on whom thou dost depend? What wouldst thou do for them? And for Me - hast thou no zealous thought for Me? Dost thou not wish to do a little good to the souls of thy friends whom thou lovest, and who have perhaps forgotten Me? Tell Me in whom thou art interested, what motives move thee, what means thou wouldst employ. Whom dost thou wish interested in thy work? I am Master of hearts, My child, and lead them where I will. I will bring round thee all who will be necessary to thee. Be tranquil. Bring Me all thy failures, and I will show thee the cause of them. Hast thou not troubles? Oh, my child, tell them all to Me fully. Who has caused thee pain? Tell Me all, and thou wilt finish by adding that thou wilt pardon, thou wilt forget; and I will bless thee. Dost thou dread something painful? Is there in thy heart a vain fear which is not reasonable, but which is tormenting? Trust thyself wholly to My care. I am here. I see everything. I will not leave thee. Are there those near thee who seem less kind to thee than they have been, and whose indifference and neglect separate thee from them, while thou canst see nothing in which thou hast wounded them? Pray earnestly to Me for them, and I will bring them back to thee, if they are needed for thy life's sanctification. Hast thou not joys to make known to Me? Why dost thou not let Me share thy happiness? Tell Me what has happened since yesterday to cheer and console thee. Was it an unexpected visit which did thee good? a fear suddenly dissipated? a success thou thoughtest thou shouldst not reach? a mark of affection, a letter, a gift, which thou hast received? a trial which left thee stronger than thou supposed? I have prepared it all for thee. Thou canst show thy gratitude and give Me thanks. Hast thou promises to make to Me? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Between the Twilights: Being Studies of Indian, Women by One of Themselves In the language of the Zenana there are two twilights, "when the Sun drops into the sea," and "when he splashes up stars for spray, ..". the Union, that is, of Earth and Sun, and, again, of Light and Darkness. And the space between is the time of times in these sun-wearied plains in which I dwell. One sees the world in a gentle haze of reminiscence - reminiscence of the best. There, across the horizon, flames the Sun's "goodbye." Great cave of mystery, or lake of liquid fire: anon pool of opal and amethyst, thoughts curiously adjustable to the day that is done, memory of joy or sorrow, of strength of love, or disregard of pain. Gradually the colour fades, now to a golden fleece of the softest, now to wisps of translucence, blush-pink, violet: oft-times the true ecstasy of colour is in the east, away from the Sun's setting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Indian Sisters During the first twenty years of this latter half of the century female emancipation has most rapidly advanced, and I had the happiness of being acquainted more or less with some of the most active leaders of the movement. I left India with infinite regret, and with an undying interest in the people and their evangelization. I have always been ready to speak and write on these subjects, and not least on the status of women and their elevation. I have not been content with the knowledge I gained whilst in India, but ever since have read all that was within my reach on these questions, studied them, and noted whatever seemed to be of value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in American History Value of Woman's Work. - From the founding of the first English settlements in the New World the women of America have bravely and nobly done their part in making our country a great nation. It is true that the pages of history are filled with stories of the deeds of men, while not many names of women are recorded. The reason for this is that woman's work for the most part has been done quietly and inconspicuously. The home has been her Kingdom, and until recent years there was no place for her in public life. To men were left the making of wars, the administration of government, and the leadership of movements affecting communities and states. But even before she entered public life woman's part in the making of our history was just as important as that of men. Women as Home Makers. - You remember how in the Virginia colony the womanless settlement at Jamestown was rapidly drifting to ruin through homesickness, discontent and idleness. Then a shipload of English maidens arrived at the Virginia shores. The young women became the wives of the settlers and established real homes in the wilderness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1902 The Gramophone Company in London sent out recording experts on "expeditions" across the world to record voices from different cultures and backgrounds. All over India, it was women who embraced the challenge of overcoming numerous social taboos and aesthetic handicaps that came along with this nascent technology. Women who took the plunge and recorded largely belonged to the courtesan community, called tawaifs and devadasis, in North and South India, respectively. Recording brought with it great fame, brand recognition, freedom from exploitative patrons, and monetary benefits to the women singers. They were to become pioneers of the music industry in the Indian sub-continent. However, despite the pioneering role played by these women, their stories have largely been forgotten. Contemporaneous with the courtesan women adapting to recording technology was the anti-nautch campaign that sought to abolish these women from the performing space and brand them as common prostitutes. A vigorous renaissance and arts revival movement followed, leading to the creation of a new classical paradigm in both North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) classical music. This resulted in the standardization, universalization, and institutionalization of Indian classical music. This newly created classical paradigm impacted future recordings of The Gramophone Company in terms of a shift in genres and styles. Vikram Sampath sheds light on the role and impact of The Gramophone Company’s early recording expeditions on Indian classical music by examining the phenomenon through a sociocultural, historical and musical lens. The book features the indefatigable stories of the women and their experiences in adapting to recording technology. The artists from across India featured are: Gauhar Jaan of Calcutta, Janki Bai of Allahabad, Zohra Bai of Agra, Malka Jaan of Agra, Salem Godavari, Bangalore Nagarathnamma, Coimbatore Thayi, Dhanakoti of Kanchipuram, Bai Sundarabai of Pune, and Husna Jaan of Banaras.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paper Read by Colonel Temple, on the Women of India, at the Royal Palace Hotel, Kensington, on March 8th, 1899 An orthodox Indian woman's life in its ordinary course is divided into two clearly defined parts, which are quite distinct, though separated from each other only by the fateful day on which she first goes to take up her abode within her father-in Iaw's family. Note that it is not called in the Indian languages her husband's family, for that, under the Indian family system, it can seldom be in the case of a bride. Childhood rather than girlhood is the heyday of the Indian woman. Free to play as she pleases, with plenty of companions, for children galore can hardly ever be wanting in a family which all live together, from oldest to youngest; free to run in and out of the houses of friends, never bothered to learn anything except what she can pick up from the women about her, never worried with caste restrictions, never asked to do more in the way of labour than to help in the housework, petted by her parents, spoilt by her aunts and uncles, and beloved by her brothers, an Indian girl child is indeed happy - as children count happiness.
