Book excerpt: The "scientific frontier" is a term used by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (Lord Beaconsfield) of Great Britain in 1878 to denote a border between British India (in present-day Pakistan) and Afghanistan, which could be occupied and defended according to the requirements of the science of military strategy, as opposed to the existing frontier, which had been formed by a haphazard pattern of British expansion through agreements and annexations. The term subsequently figured prominently in British discussions about the defense of British India from a possible Russian invasion through Afghanistan. Our Scientific Frontier, published toward the end of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), is an analysis of this subject, written to influence the British debate on the terms of peace. The author, William Patrick Andrew, was chairman of the Scinde, Punjab, and Delhi Railway Company, and thus an expert on logistics and transport in India and along its frontiers. The book contains chapters on the Northwest Frontier, the history, geography, and economy of Afghanistan, the independent border tribes, mountain passes, probable routes of invasion from Afghanistan into India, and the "Powindahs, or Soldier-Merchants of Afghanistan." Three appendices cover the Sherpur entrenchments that were part of the defense of Kabul, the Bolan and Khyber railways (neither of which was constructed until after the period discussed), and transport by rail of troops, horses, guns, and war matériel in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Simpson provides an innovative account of how distinctive forms of colonial power and knowledge developed at the territorial fringes of colonial India during the nineteenth century. Through critical interventions in a wide range of theoretical and historiographical fields, he speaks to historians of empire and science, anthropologists, and geographers alike. The Frontier in British India provides the first connected and comparative analysis of frontiers in northwest and northeast India and draws on visual and written materials from an array of archives across the subcontinent and the UK. Colonial interventions in frontier spaces and populations were, it shows, enormously destructive but also prone to confusion and failure on their own terms. British frontier administrators did not merely suffer 'turbulent' frontiers, but actively worked to generate and uphold these regions as spaces of governmental and scientific exception. Accordingly, India's frontiers became crucial spaces of imperial practice and imagination throughout the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: India Has A Rich History Of Scientific Accomplishments. In The Fifth Century, Nearly One Millennium Before Copernicus, The Indian Astronomer And Mathematician Aryabhata Theorized That The Earth Spins On An Axis. Likewise, In The Twentieth Century Physicist Meghnad Saha S Ionization Equation Opened The Door To Stellar Astrophysics. But India S Scientific Achievements Have Occurred As Flashes Of Brilliance Rather Than As A Clear Trajectory Of Progress. So How Did India, With Its Historic University System And Excellent Observatories, Lose Its Scientific Edge? Cosmologist, Founder Director Of The Inter-University Centre For Astronomy And Astrophysics, And Science Fiction Author Jayant V. Narlikar Tracks The Highs And Lows Of Indian Science Across The Millennia, Distinguishing Fact From Fiction. Through A Lively Narrative Of Breakthroughs And Failures, He Explores India S Multifaceted Scientific History. Narlikar Explores The Glories Of India S Scientific Advances And Questions The More Fanciful So-Called Discoveries. His Essays Are Invigorated By His Excitement For New Findings, And He Argues Passionately For Preserving The True Scientific Temperament Instead Of Granting Legitimacy To Such Pseudosciences As Astrology. Above All, Narlikar Raises Issues That Both The Lay Person And The Scientist Need To Consider As India Seeks To Lead The World In Information Technology And Biotechnology.

Book excerpt: India: it's a nation of geeks, swots and nerds. Almost one in five of all medical and dental staff in the UK is of Indian origin, and one in six employed scientists with science or engineering doctorates in the US is Asian. By the turn of the millennium, there were even claims that a third of all engineers in Silicon Valley were of Indian origin, with Indians running 750 of its tech companies. At the dawn of this scientific revolution, Geek Nation is a journey to meet the inventors, engineers and young scientists helping to give birth to the world's next scientific superpower - a nation built not on conquest, oil or minerals, but on the scientific ingenuity of its people. Angela Saini explains how ancient science is giving way to new, and how the technology of the wealthy are passing on to the poor. Delving inside the psyche of India's science-hungry citizens, she explores the reason why the government of the most religious country on earth has put its faith in science and technology. Through witty first-hand reportage and penetrative analysis, Geek Nation explains what this means for the rest of the world, and how a spiritual nation squares its soul with hard rationality. Full of curious, colourful characters and gripping stories, it describes India through its people - a nation of geeks
