Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 27 papers in all. The papers included in this volume provide various facets of the management perspectives in the field of human resources, corporate governance, sustainability, entrepreneurship and gig economy, among others. Admittedly, in a multi-author book such as this, a divergence of topics and issues as well as views on a given topic or issue is inevitable. The book encompasses in its fold a wide range of business and policy issues in the Indian setup. Further, in view of the fact that the various papers included in the present volume are authored by researchers with diverse interests and backgrounds, it is not surprising that each paper may look unique even in terms of its structure of presentation, too. In such a situation, the editor’s dilemma should not be difficult to imagine for the reader. As editors of this volume, therefore, we deliberately preferred to keep the author’s style, arguments or conclusions, intact. In more precise terms, the papers included in this volume are largely in their original form and content. Although we, not being completely oblivious of our editorial responsibilities, have attempted some cosmetic aesthetics here and there in respect of some papers.

Book excerpt: It is now widely recognised that rising inequality of income and wealth on the one hand and a slowdown in the rate of economic growth on the other are two of the most important challenges faced today by the global economy as well as by most of the developing economies. This book starts by explaining how these two issues are interrelated. There is no dearth of books on the role that the economic policies of the government can play in meeting these twin challenges. The role of business managers in the private sector of the economy, however, is a relatively neglected area. This book seeks to close this gap in the literature. The central message of the book is that, contrary to popular belief, it is in the interests of private business itself that business managers take into account the effects that their decisions have on the economy as a whole. It is shown that a failure to do so would hurt their own economic prospects in both the short run and the long. Emphasis is given on the importance of an appropriate orientation of managerial decisions and on the role of investors (i.e. the suppliers of capital) in inducing managers to take socially optimal decisions. The book is addressed as much to business managers and students in management courses as to the general reader. Therefore, no prior knowledge of advanced economic theory is presumed. All arguments are built from first principles.

Yet, the improvement in material conditions for the country’s vast majority has not kept pace with that growth. This is mainly because India is still grappling with poor employment conditions and widespread unemployment. However, there is not much clarity on the exact nature of this problem and the steps required to tackle it. This short introduction addresses this lack of information. Reviewing the evolution of employment conditions in India since Independence, this volume underscores the linkages between it and economic growth and development. It not only clearly outlines the contours of the employment challenge that India is now confronted with but also discusses viable ways of overcoming this hurdle.

This book analyses the current legislative framework, ongoing reforms, saving and investment patterns, and financial products that are aimed at the rapidly burgeoning retirement market. In a world divided between the pension haves and the pension have-nots, the relative absence of retirement literacy remains a giant concern, a gap the book aims to address. For both policymakers and individual savers, The Great Indian Retirement Crisis makes a compelling story.

Book excerpt: The benefits of high integrity and high-responsibility organizations are well[1]established conscience mechanisms based on the principles of inclusion that emphasize justice, care, and fair practices at workplaces. Superrich Amazon investor Nick Hanauer writes in Oxfam’s state of wealth inequality report published on Monday (January 21, 2019) “I am a practitioner of capitalism,” ... The most important lesson I have learned from these decades of experience with market capitalism is that morality and justice are the fundamental prerequisites for prosperity and economic growth (Singh Sengupta, 2021). When leaders and organizations operate from a deep awareness of their consciousness—they naturally behave responsibly beyond what appears to be their own self-interest...The managers who integrate spiritual values with their managerial styles in the entire operations management system bring integrity and oneness to the organizations...

It demonstrates the vitality of thought from around the world by connecting theories and traditions, including reflections on European colonization, to build shared, rather than universal, understandings. Across 36 chapters, the Handbook offers a series of perspectives and cases from different locations, enabling the reader better to understand the particularities of specific contexts and how they are connected to global movements and structures. By moving beyond standard accounts of sociology and social theory, this Handbook offers both valuable insight into and scholarly contribution to the field of global sociology.
