Book Synopsis The Making of Southeast Asia by : Amitav Acharya
Download or read book The Making of Southeast Asia written by Amitav Acharya and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a framework to study "what makes a region," Amitav Acharya investigates the origins and evolution of Southeast Asian regionalism and international relations. He views the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) "from the bottom up" as not only a U.S.-inspired ally in the Cold War struggle against communism but also an organization that reflects indigenous traditions. Although Acharya deploys the notion of "imagined community" to examine the changes, especially since the Cold War, in the significance of ASEAN dealings for a regional identity, he insists that "imagination" is itself not a neutral but rather a culturally variable concept. The regional imagination in Southeast Asia imagines a community of nations different from NAFTA or NATO, the OAU, or the European Union. In this new edition of a book first published as The Quest for Identity in 2000, Acharya updates developments in the region through the first decade of the new century: the aftermath of the financial crisis of 1997, security affairs after September 2001, the long-term impact of the 2004 tsunami, and the substantial changes wrought by the rise of China as a regional and global actor. Acharya argues in this important book for the crucial importance of regionalism in a different part of the world.

Book Synopsis The Peoples of Southeast Asia Today by : Robert L. Winzeler
Download or read book The Peoples of Southeast Asia Today written by Robert L. Winzeler and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2010-01-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peoples of Southeast Asia Today offers an anthropological treatment of the ethnography and ethnology of Southeast Asia, covering both the mainland and the insular regions. Based on the proposition that Southeast Asia is a true culture area, the book offers background information on geography, languages, prehistory and history, with a particular emphasis on the role of colonialism and the development of ethnic pluralism. It then turns to classic anthropological topics of interest including modes of adaptation, ways of life, and religion, all illustrated with relevant, current case studies. Students will find well-supported discussions of subjects ranging from the development of agriculture and language dispersals, to fantasy and reality in hunter-gatherer studies, to disputed interpretations of Thai Buddhism and Javanese Islam, to ongoing government efforts to manage religion, create proper citizens, resettle and assimilate indigenous populations, end shifting cultivation and promote modernization.
Book Synopsis Southeast Asian Tribes, Minorities, and Nations, Volume 1 by : Peter Kunstadter
Download or read book Southeast Asian Tribes, Minorities, and Nations, Volume 1 written by Peter Kunstadter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major source of political instability in Southeast Asia has been ethnic diversity and the lack of congruence between ethnic distributions and national boundaries. Here twenty specialists base their papers largely on original field work in Burma, China, India, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Contrary to the usual picture of tribal people as isolated, homogeneous, stable, and conservative, the papers show tribesmen are often a dynamic force in the modern history of Southeast Asian states. Descriptions of tribal life and government programs, together with charts, tables, maps, and photographs give a wealth of data. Originally published in 1967. Book Synopsis Tragic Orphans by : Carl Vadivella Belle
Download or read book Tragic Orphans written by Carl Vadivella Belle and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938, noting that the bulk of the Indian population formed a "e;landless proletariat"e; and despairing of the ability of the factionalized Indian community to unite in pursuit of common objectives, activist K.A. Neelakanda Ayer forecast that the fate of Indians in Malaya would be to become "e;Tragic orphans"e; of whom India has forgotten and Malaya looks down upon with contempt"e;. Ayer's words continue to resonate; as a minority group in a nation dominated politically by colonially derived narratives of "e;race"e; and ethnicity and riven by the imperatives of religion, the general trajectory of the economically and politically impotent Indian community has been one of increasing irrelevance. This book explores the history of the modern Indian presence in Malaysia, and traces the vital role played by the Indian community in the construction of contemporary Malaysia. In this comprehensive new study, Carl Vadivella Belle offers fresh insights on the Indian experience spanning the period from the colonial recruitment of Indian labour to the post-Merdeka political, economic and social marginalization of Indians. While recent Indian challenges to the political status quo - a regime described as that of "e;benign neglect"e; - promoted Indian hopes of reform, change and uplift, the author concludes that the dictates of political discourse permeated by the ideologies of communalism offer limited prospects for meaningful change.
Book Synopsis Empire of Convicts by : Anand A. Yang
Download or read book Empire of Convicts written by Anand A. Yang and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empire of Convicts focuses on male and female Indians incarcerated in Southeast Asia for criminal and political offenses committed in colonial South Asia. From the seventeenth century onward, penal transportation was a key strategy of British imperial rule, exemplified by deportations first to the Americas and later to Australia. Case studies from the insular prisons of Bengkulu, Penang, and Singapore illuminate another carceral regime in the Indian Ocean World that brought South Asia and Southeast Asia together through a global system of forced migration and coerced labor. A major contribution to histories of crime and punishment, prisons, law, labor, transportation, migration, colonialism, and the Indian Ocean World, Empire of Convicts narrates the experiences of Indian bandwars (convicts) and shows how they exercised agency in difficult situations, fashioning their own worlds and even becoming “their own warders.” Anand A. Yang brings long journeys across kala pani (black waters) to life in a deeply researched and engrossing account that moves fluidly between local and global contexts.

Book Synopsis Early Interactions Between South and Southeast Asia by : Pierre-Yves Manguin
Download or read book Early Interactions Between South and Southeast Asia written by Pierre-Yves Manguin and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2011 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes stock of the results of some two decades of intensive archaeological research carried out on both sides of the Bay of Bengal, in combination with renewed approaches to textual sources and to art history. To improve our understanding of the trans-cultural process commonly referred to as Indianisation, it brings together specialists of both India and Southeast Asia, in a fertile inter-disciplinary confrontation. Most of the essays reappraise the millennium-long historiographic no-man's land during which exchanges between the two shores of the Bay of Bengal led, among other processes, to the Indianisation of those parts of the region that straddled the main routes of exchange. Some essays follow up these processes into better known "classical" times or even into modern times, showing that the localisation process of Indian themes has long remained at work, allowing local societies to produce their own social space and express their own ethos.
Book Synopsis Taking Southeast Asia to Market by : Joseph Nevins
Download or read book Taking Southeast Asia to Market written by Joseph Nevins and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent changes in the global economy and in Southeast Asian national political economies have led to new forms of commodity production and new commodities. Using insights from political economy and commodity studies, the essays in Taking Southeast Asia to Market trace the myriad ways recent alignments among producers, distributors, and consumers are affecting people and nature throughout the region. In case studies ranging from coffee and hardwood products to mushroom pickers and Vietnamese factory workers, the authors detail the Southeast Asian articulations of these processes while also discussing the broader implications of these shifts. Taken together, the cases show how commodities illuminate the convergence of changing social forces in Southeast Asia today, as they transform the terms, practices, and experiences of everyday life and politics in the global economy.
