Book excerpt: This celebration grew out of a wish to mark significant milestones in 1998 for 2 distinguished local research sites in Montana: the 50th anniversary of the start of research at Coram Experimental Forest and the 30th year at Miller Creek Demonstration Forest. This area is blessed with world class natural attractions. From the distant reaches of Glacier Nat. Park's alpine highlands, to the shimmering, clear waters of Flathead Lake, this setting nurtures a remarkable diversity of native plants, wildlife, and interesting people. Everyone who wished to do so was invited to contribute written reflections on the Flathead. This book is their gift to us all. Includes photos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rails Trails and Other Tales weaves the reader through the romance and adventure of hopping freight trains and being out in the wilderness. Along with others, there are stories of dogs, ducks and commentaries on the misunderstood mule. Stories lived and stories handed down, kept alive with the telling and given longevity with the pen. Adventure and experiences through which the reader can get an idea of how life in the open and on the move can get into ones psyche to the point that wondering becomes solace to a wayward spirit. Some experiences in life we pursue and acquire, others just come along and happen to us when we put ourselves in their paths. Either way experiences and adventures are elements in life that give substance to our memories. We may not be able to experience all we wish, but we can, visit some experiences lived by others. You, reader may not be able to wander in the fi rst person but here you can sit back and do some arm-chair wandering and have a look at some other tid-bits of life. Also you may get a little look into what can happen sometimes when one just casts his way into the winds of chance. Meynardie

Book excerpt: Consisting of more than a million acres straddling the Continental Divide, Glacier is one of the largest, wildest, and most spectacular of our national parks. Ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 feet in elevation, with moist climates to the west and dry ones to the east, Glacier is rich in topographical and biological diversity, and although it attracts over 2 million visitors a year, it is still largely wilderness. Like the first two guides in this new series, Grand Canyon and Great Smokies, this book includes a fascinating narrative that captures the park's unique personality, natural history, and human history, as well as a wealth of reference material on plants and animals, geology, climate, and visitor information. The book is illustrated with photographs, drawings, and maps.

Book excerpt: We face an epidemic of disengagement in American high schools as our institutions fail to offer meaningful and relevant ways to connect curriculum with students' emerging life stories. These students do not see how schooling, as it is presently constituted, is important to their own developing identities. One solution to this problem is to organize the curriculum around the concept of community and to link the study of abstract concepts and principles to their manifestations in the places that students know and care about (local history, shared traditions, civic pride, etc.). The Power of Community-Centered Education provides psychological, sociological, historical, and philosophical insights into why community works so well as an organizing principle for high school.

Book excerpt: During September 1-4, 1805, the Corps of Discovery under the command of Lewis and Clark bushwacked their way northward over the dividing ridge between the waters of what they called Lewis' River on the south and Clark's River on the north. They began on the Salmon River in Idaho and their destination was the Bitterroot River in Montana. They were not following an established Indian trail because they chose to go due north over the most direct route possible. The established Indian trail, at that time, looped eastward through the Big Hole before going northward up Trail Creek, over Gibbons Pass, and then into the Bitterroot Valley. The route of the Corps of Discovery over Lost Trail Pass is, to repeat an often used phrase, "a puzzle wrapped in a mystery, shrouded by an enigma." It remains a major challenge to the Lewis and Clark trail community to determine their route for September 1-4, 1805 and their September 2nd and 3rd camping sites. This paper reports on a technique the author has developed, using topography and computer analysis techniques, that can be applied to the Lost Trail route. For the past 12 years, I have been doing research on the Lolo Trail from Lolo, Montana to Weippe, Idaho. This work is nearing completion and will result in the accurate location and documentation of the trails within the Lolo Trail System: the Northern Nez Perces Trail, the Bird-Truax Trail, and the Lewis and Clark route. The research techniques developed for the Lolo Trail were applied to the Lost Trail route using modern map data and the expedition*s journal narratives and maps. While the Lolo Trail research results were validated by cross-checking with many other historical sources, as well as ground truthing, no known equivalent resources exist for the Lost Trail route. The party "bushwhacked" their way over the pass and did not follow an established "roade." Without the remnants of a well-travelled Indian trail, we are left with only their journal records and the topography to be our guide.
