Book excerpt: This important volume on the history of sociology in India locates scholars, scholarship, theories, perspectives, and practices of the discipline in different cities and regions of the country over a century. It argues that this history is enmeshed in political projects of constructing a ‘society’, which took place as a result of colonialism and dominant nationalism. The book affirms the existence of both strong and weak traditions of scholarship in India and underscores three processes that have aided this development at various points of time: reflexive interrogation of received scholarship; probing ideal types of theories within classrooms; and questioning existing debates on society and its language by the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Sciences in India have acquired the status of a profession. Although they are relatively recent, their achievements have been remarkable. The papers collected in this volume relate to some aspects of the growth of the profession of social sciences in India. Written by one of the distinguished and leading sociologists of the country Professor Yogesh Atal — these essays convey an insider-view of the profession. The growth of the profession and the general problems related to teaching and research are discussed in the first two chapters. The reader is then introduced more intimately to the twin disciplines of sociology and social anthropology as they have developed in India. A full chapter is devoted to the studies of the village. The book also contains two articles on research methodology. One is a detailed account of the research carried out by the author on which is based his well-known book, Local Communities and National Politics (1971). The other essay is on the evolution of content analysis as a research technique. The essays do not merely narrate the history of the growth of social science enterprise in India. The author has frankly discussed the problems facing the profession, and has critically evaluated its past performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. N. Srinivas is acclaimed as a doyen of modern sociology and social anthropology in India. In this book, A. M. Shah, a distinguished Indian sociologist and a close associate of Srinivas’s, reflects on his legacy as a scholar, teacher, and institution builder. The book is a collection of Shah’s five chapters on and an interview with Srinivas, with a comprehensive introduction. He narrates Srinivas’s life and work in different phases; discusses his theoretical ideas, especially functionalism, compared with Max Weber’s ideas; deliberates on his concept of Sanskritisation and its contemporary relevance; and reflects on his role in the history of sociology and social anthropology in India. In the interview, Srinivas responds to a large number of questions from the style of writing to the dynamics of politics. It shows that while his scholarship was firmly rooted in India, it was sensitive to global ideas and institutions. This book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers in sociology, social anthropology, history, and political science. The general reader interested in these subjects will also find it useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol I: This is the first of a three-volume survey of research and developments in the field of sociology and its practice in India in the last decade, undertaken by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The essays included in this volume scrutinize a gamut of contemporary and critical themes and concepts in Indian sociology. They contextualize sociological knowledge-building and theorization of both, the key structural elements of Indian society, such as, caste, class, community, and the processual changes of the rural-urban divide. This survey marks the emergence of new conceptual tools, and outlines and reviews the growth of literature capturing India's social, economic, and cultural transition in the last decade. Vol II: This volume brings together in-depth explorations in the key areas of sociological and social anthropological research in India from 2000 to 2010. The researches in this volume discuss sociology of development, of education, and law. The contributions use new conceptual and theoretical paradigms, leading to a comprehensive analysis of the themes they have undertaken for the review. This volume includes a paper that discusses the themes of sociology and economics-the interrelationship of economy and society as an important approach of developmental analysis. Another paper talks about the sociological research on school education in India, emphasizing the need for a sociological study of education to understand the complexity of this sphere of society and social reality in India. Other contributions discuss industrial sociology, sociology and law, and an assessment of the development of the sociology of health and medicine in India. The sociological ideas of justice and equality, distributive justice, diversity, and inclusive growth are also analysed. Vol III: The third volume includes researches focusing primarily on the nature of marginalization and demand for empowerment by the Dalits, tribes, religious minorities, women, and the displaced communities. One of the contributions offers a historical review of ideologies and commitments to policies on social justice and equality since Independence. Another paper presents a conceptual analysis of the place of the Dalits in the Hindu social order, making a distinction between the 'book view' and 'field view' of the social realities on this issue. Another paper offers a comprehensive survey of researches on tribal studies, dealing with family systems and institutions of marriage and kinship. There is a discussion on communication research in India-the predominant role of the state on media policies, its developmental objectives after independence, and the contemporary transitions. This volume also covers researches on religion and cultural pluralism, concepts of gender and its interface with social structure from a feminist point of view, and globalization and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the five major sociologists whose views on Indian society are assessed in this work, originally published in 1979, Marx and Weber made a special study of the subject and had something definite to say about the future of Indian society. Herbert Spencer was primarily concerned with the effects of colonial rule on India’s progress, while Durkheim and Pareto tended to observe Indian society from a comparative point of view. However, as this study shows, all five sociologists touched on two special aspects of Indian society – Indian religion and the caste system. The other features of Indian society which they discussed in their various writings range widely from marriage and family structure, through village communities and the social structure of cities, to political organization, the educational system, economic conditions, and the future progress of Indian society. Dr Madan demonstrates the correctness of Marx’s contention that the political subordination of India was the one great hindrance to the future progress of Indian Society. He points out, though, that Marx failed to see clearly the effects of the caste system on economic development, and shows that this aspect was more correctly assessed by Max Weber. On the other hand, in Dr Madan’s view, Weber’s observation that Indian religion was ‘other-worldly’ and therefore a great obstacle to progress in Indian society lacked incisiveness. By focusing on a neglected aspect of the writings of five of the great figures in sociology, the book gives a new insight into their work, and at the same time highlights many hitherto unrecognized facets of India’s complex social structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the country’s most eminent sociologists, J.P.S. Uberoi inaugurated a unique approach in the study of Indian sociology and social anthropology. He makes a case for a form of independent Indian sociology in relation to the principal philosophies and sociological theories of the Western world, by adopting Gandhi’s plea for swaraj in thought. This volume brings together eighteen papers by Uberoi which highlight his pioneering thought. Originally written between 1968 and 2013, these papers are divided thematically into three groups. The first examines the eternal political war of imperialism versus nationalism as it related to the academic pursuit of knowledge in the university. The second group begins with questions of social science and philosophy and concludes by discussing the working lives of the industrial worker (in the West) and the household farmer (in the East). The third group explores the project of finding grounds for a concept of a plural vernacular Indian modernity. The volume represents an emphatic statement by the author that the time has come for India to bid for its place in the universal free world of the intellect.
