Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Story County, Iowa, Vol. 1: A Record of Organization, Progress and Achievement Only one serious collision seems to have followed the establishment of this neutral ground. This collision occurred in the eastern part of Kossuth County. Some time in the early fifties, and its story was that a small fishing party of Sioux were there attacked by a large body of Sacs and Foxes. Who had been camping at Clear Lake and who learned of the proximity of the smaller party of the Sioux. The Sacs and Foxes made a night march to the camp of the Sioux. Attacked the camping party in the early morning. And allowed no one to get away to tell the tale. Captain Ingham. Father of the editor of the Register and Leader. Ran upon the scene of this mas sacre a few years later and found there the skeletons of the unfortunate Sioux. Those of the children being huddled and each of them chipped as to the skull. Where the tomahawk had struck. This incident occurred after the settlement of Story County; but the fact that only one incident of this sort is definitely recorded. Illustrates in part why there is no Indian history of Story County. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iowa: A Reprint From the Indian Record, as Originally Published and Edited by Thomas Foster, With Introduction, and Elucidations Through the Text The material forming the greater part of the present monograph is reprinted verbatim et literatim from certain portions of volume 1, Numbers 1, 2, and 3, Washington, N ovem ber 30, 1876, of Foster's indian record and historical data. The complete work so far as carried out consists only of the three parts here mentioned, printed in folio and comprising four numbered pages each. The editor, Dr. Thomas Foster, who termed him self Indian historiographer hoped to be able to publish the sheet weekly should funds permit. Evidently lack of finances or the small amount of interest shown in the venture determined against its continuance as it ceased with the third issue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indians of the Chicago Region It is the wish to present here, especially to young people, a picture of the Indians who lived in the Chicago region in the years gone by. The red man himself left no printed history. His presence here already seems only a tradition. Yet he made an im pression upon early Chicago that must not be forgotten. It is hoped that Indians of the Chicago Region, gathered from various sources, will help to revive the memory of the almost forgotten red man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Chiefs of Pennsylvania, or a Story of the Part Played by the American Indian in the History of Pennsylvania: Based Primarily on the Pennsylvania Archives and Colonial Records, and Built Around the Outstanding Chiefs T affords me much pleasure to write these few words of intro duction to The Indian Wars of Pennsylvania, of which I have read the manuscript. Mr. Sipe has wisely followed the same scientific method in the collection of his data for this work which he did in his Indian Chiefs of Pennsylvania. As a consequence the two books give a thoroughly accurate picture of the thrillingly romantic period of Pennsylvania history from 1755 to 1795, during which the mountains and the valleys of the frontiers of Pennsylvania were literally drenched with blood.
