India means the greatest customer of England; India means the greatest employer of the best of English intellect and manhood; India means the noblest achievement of England. Again, what would India be without England? Who would protect her from the Central Asian free hooters? Who would guarantee the internal peace? Who would bring her deserts and jungles under cultivation? Who would give her the benefits of modern science and modern civilization? The unity of England with India is therefore a Divine dispensation for the good of both the countries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The fertility of a country may prove its ruin, if accompanied by a soft and languid climate which saps the energies and weakens the combative instincts of the inhabitants. Of this Egypt is an instructive example. It has passed from one conqueror to another until it has lost the consciousness of national life. India, like Egypt, has been the coveted prize of the strong. But unlike Egypt it has in the long run absorbed its invaders and maintained its own civilisation. It has been able to do this because its natural frontiers have protected it from invasion except at one or two points. These points are so distant from the centre that invasions of India always lost something of their first impetus before they could be pressed home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reflections on the Problems of India You will remember on a certain occasion when Boswell was indulging in one of his heroics, Johnson turned round and said, My dear friend, clear your mind of cant. I believe at the present moment no sounder advice could be given to the Educated Classes in India than in those memorable words of the bluff old Doctor, and my efforts in the following pages are solely or mainly directed towards assisting my Countrymen in clearing their minds of cant. One thing I wish you to bear in mind is that I do not pretend to solve the Problems of India as most other writers have attempted to do before me; I only venture to give my reflections on them, or rather, the thoughts that have crossed my mind while reading all the wit and wisdom that the leaders of Indian thought have so lavished upon them. Their hands need upholding and they rightly look to us for support in personnel, in material resources, in spiritual aid. Only by familiarizing ourselves with their needs can we render adequate assistance. This volume is sent forth as one means of bringing home to our fellow Americans what more than three hundred millions of human beings need and to point out to us what we can do to meet that need. While I Mia. And Its Missions does not profess to tell all about either India or its missions, one who has read it cannot but be better informed and more vitally interested in India and its problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Great Indian Problem and a Suggested Solution What is the Indian Problem? It has two aspects. (1) In Great Britain it appears to be a spirit of "unrest" and "discontent." Now and again, one sees in the London and Provincial newspapers, the ugly words "Sedition in India." (2) In India, the problem is one that daily presses upon the millions of its people, the problem of making two ends meet; of the food supplies for the ever growing population, and wherewithal to buy the needs of life? Where there is smoke, there is fire, and there is a cause for "unrest" and "discontent," but it is Economical and not Political. A great solution lies, in my opinion, as I will attempt to show in this pamphlet, in the development of the produce of land, and in freeing the cultivator from the harassment and hardship of the present system of cash fixed payment, according to a periodical or any kind of assessment. Before proceeding to outline my scheme in somewhat greater detail, I will here just say that from the knowledge of my own countrymen, I firmly believe that a revision of the Government of India's Land Revenue Policy in some accordance with my proposed solution of the problem will speedily lead to a development of land produce which will tend to alleviate, if not terminate, the "unrest" and "discontent," the evidences of dissatisfaction with the outward conditions of life.
