Their hands need upholding and they rightly look to us for support in personnel, in material resources, in spiritual aid. Only by familiarizing ourselves with their needs can we render adequate assistance. This volume is sent forth as one means of bringing home to our fellow Americans what more than three hundred millions of human beings need and to point out to us what we can do to meet that need. While I Mia. And Its Missions does not profess to tell all about either India or its missions, one who has read it cannot but be better informed and more vitally interested in India and its problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our India Missions: A Thirty Year's History of the India Mission of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, Together With Personal Reminiscences Some years ago we made the suggestion to the Rev. Andrew Gordon, D.D., that he should write a history of the India Mission. The suggestion was made because we knew from conversations with him, and from his familiarity with the field and the work from the beginning, that he was in possession of the material necessary, and was in a position to produce an intensely interesting volume. For the reason indicated, and to promote the interests of the mission, the work was undertaken. We have had the privilege of hearing portions of the manuscript read, and of perusing most of the proof-sheets as the pages have been passing through the press; and we do not hesitate to say that our most sanguine expectations have been far more than realized. Dr. Gordon has produced a volume of surpassing interest. We have not been so fascinated by any other book on the subject of Missions that has fallen into our hands. We were asked to read some parts of the work for the purpose of correcting the proof Invariably we would forget the errors in type because enchanted with the story. We might refer to the chapter descriptive of the field, the chapters on the Sepoy rebellion, those relating to certain native laborers, as of the greatest dramatic interest; but we could hardly make a selection, and say that one chapter is more charming than another. We feel sure the reader will agree with us when we say that there is not a dull page in the book. Even the statistics are so introduced as to greatly increase the pleasure of perusal. In pleading the cause of Missions in various parts of England, I was struck with the large number of persons who felt greatly interested in the progress of Christianity in India, who knew comparatively little, in a definite form, of the country as a field for missions, yet who were quite prepared eagerly to accept of all the information that could be given them. It is for such that this volume is designed. It has been my aim, in conjunction with this leading missionary purpose, to give as much information as possible - without seriously digressing from the subject in hand - respecting the character, and the social as well as religious state of the people of India. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of India and of Mission Life The future of India is as bright as prophecy and promise, and as sure as the Father's gift to His Son. But before the perfect day of India's salvation has come, the Church must continue the work of faith, the labour of love, and submit to the patience of hope. Many of her best sons must be sent to India and buried there. Much more wealth must be expended there. The spirit of the Cross must be more deeply felt, and its grand law of self-denial be more fully exercised. We commend this little book to the friends of Missions, and invoke upon its story the blessing of Jesus, the world's great Missionary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Missions to India: With Notices of Some Proceedings of a Deputation From the American Board, and of Reports to It From the Missions On the passage home, by way of England, this little book was composed, as a sort of digest of experience and observation, for nearly thirty-seven years; with the double hope of assisting those who may be considering the question of personal devotement to a mission in India, and of aiding the supporters of such a mission in its intelligent support and direction. It was written without any knowledge of the discussion before the American Board in Utica, and previous, of course, to the special meeting in Albany. Very little has been added since, and no modifications of any importance have been made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This list was compiled in 1871-72, and is now out of print. It was thought that a revised list would be convenient and useful, especially to those in charge of mission presses, periodicals, etc; and of interest to others: hence the appearance of the present volume.
