Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noam Chomsky is Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. David W. Lightfoot is Professor at Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA. 'Chomsky's book on syntactic structures is one of the first serious attempts on the part of a linguist to construct within the tradition of scientific theory-construction a comprehensive theory of language which may be understood in the same sense that a chemical, biological theory is ordinarily understood by experts in those fields. It is not a mere reorganization of the data into a new kind of library catalog, nor another speculative philosophy about the nature of Man and Language, but rather a rigorous explication of our intuitions about our language in terms of an overt axiom system, the theorems derivable from it, explicit results which may be compared with new data and other intuitions, all based plainly on an overt theory of the internal structure of languages; and it may well provide an opportunity for the application of explicit measures of simplicity to decide preference of one form over another form of grammar. 'Robert B. Lees in : 'Language' 'I had already decided I wanted to be a linguist when I discovered this book. But it is unlikely that I would have stayed in the field without it. It has been the single most inspiring book on linguistics in my whole career.' HenkvanRiemsdijk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chomsky proposes a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes recent developments in the descriptive analysis of particular languages into account. Beginning in the mid-fifties and emanating largely form MIT, an approach was developed to linguistic theory and to the study of the structure of particular languages that diverges in many respects from modern linguistics. Although this approach is connected to the traditional study of languages, it differs enough in its specific conclusions about the structure and in its specific conclusions about the structure of language to warrant a name, "generative grammar." Various deficiencies have been discovered in the first attempts to formulate a theory of transformational generative grammar and in the descriptive analysis of particular languages that motivated these formulations. At the same time, it has become apparent that these formulations can be extended and deepened. The major purpose of this book is to review these developments and to propose a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes them into account. The emphasis in this study is syntax; semantic and phonological aspects of the language structure are discussed only insofar as they bear on syntactic theory.

Book excerpt: In this paper,(1) I will restrict the term ""linguistic theory"" to systems of hypotheses concerning the general features of human language put forth in an attempt to account for a certain range of linguistic phenomena. I will not be concerned with systems of terminology or methods of investigation (analytic procedures). The central fact to which any significant linguistic theory must address itself is this: a mature speaker can produce a new sentence of his language on the appropriate occasion, and other speakers can understand it immediately, though it is equally new to them. Sample Book Insights: #1 The American linguist Noam Chomsky has a very difficult time explaining how his linguistic theories are connected to his political criticisms of American imperialism. His approach is straightforward, and anyone can do it. #2 The elitist claim that only intellectuals can produce insightful analyses of social issues is false. In fact, the social sciences are accessible to anyone who wants to take an interest in them. #3 In American politics, the elitist claim that only intellectuals can produce insightful analyses of social issues is false. In fact, the social sciences are accessible to anyone who wants to take an interest in them. #4 There is a clear distinction between the scientific fields of mathematics and the ideological disciplines of sociology, political science, and economics. The former do not require special credentials to enter, and their content is simply explained and demonstrated. The latter, however, require special credentials to enter and contribute to the illusion that their content is difficult to understand.

Book excerpt: In this extraordinarily original and profound work, Noam Chomsky discusses themes in the study of language and mind since the end of the sixteenth century in order to explain the motivations and methods that underlie his work in linguistics, the science of mind, and even politics. This edition includes a new and specially written introduction by James McGilvray, contextualising the work for the twenty-first century. It has been made more accessible to a larger audience; all the French and German in the original edition has been translated, and the notes and bibliography have been brought up to date. The relationship between the original edition (published in 1966) and contemporary biolinguistic work is also explained. This challenging volume is an important contribution to the study of language and mind, and to the history of these studies since the end of the sixteenth century.

For customers in Japan: please contact Yushodo Co.The general aim of the Senshu University Project "The Development of the Anglo-Saxon Language and Linguistic Universals" is investigation of structural characteristics common to the Germanic languages, such as English, German and Norwegian, and of works on and in the tradition of Generative Grammar founded by Noam Chomsky in the 1950s. The central idea of Generative Grammar, that the nature of natural-language syntax can be captured by a finite set of rules which are able to produce an infinite set of well-formed structures has been highly evaluated and influential even in related fields such as biolinguistics, philosophy, psychology and computer science." Noam Chomsky and Language Descriptions" is a collection of articles that focus on the earliest but essential linguistic theory proposed by Noam Chomsky and articles that discuss specific topics pertaining to the study Germanic languages, in particular English and German. It is divided into two parts: Part 1. Genesis of Generative Grammar; and Part 2. Current Issues in Language Descriptions. The present book will be of general interest to linguists who seek to understand the original idea of Generative Grammar and nature of the Germanic languages.

Book excerpt: The two most popular titles by the noted linguist and critic in one volume—an ideal introduction to his work. On Language features some of Noam Chomsky’s most informal and highly accessible work. In Part I, Language and Responsibility, Chomsky presents a fascinating self-portrait of his political, moral, and linguistic thinking. In Part II, Reflections on Language, Chomsky explores the more general implications of the study of language and offers incisive analyses of the controversies among psychologists, philosophers, and linguists over fundamental questions of language. “Language and Responsibility is a well-organized, clearly written and comprehensive introduction to Chomsky’s thought.” —The New York Times Book Review “Language and Responsibility brings together in one readable volume Chomsky’s positions on issues ranging from politics and philosophy of science to recent advances in linguistic theory. . . . The clarity of presentation at times approaches that of Bertrand Russell in his political and more popular philosophical essays.” —Contemporary Psychology “Reflections on Language is profoundly satisfying and impressive. It is the clearest and most developed account of the case of universal grammar and of the relations between his theory of language and the innate faculties of mind responsible for language acquisition and use.” —Patrick Flanagan

Book excerpt: The essays collected in this book result from recent work in trace theory, the starting point being Chomsky's proposals to permit syntax to over-generate profusely and then to provide most of the significant reduction in the form of a system of filters and constraints on logical form. They all address various aspects and implications of his article, On Binding, which is reprinted here. Equally important, the essays demonstrate the applicability of Chomsky's proposals to a number of different languages. Heny writes that "editorial work on the volume brought me to a realization of the far-reaching implications of the approach to linguistic analysis underlying Chomsky's On Binding. It constitutes a radical break with his previous work, of a very exciting and promising kind." Heny's Introduction goes on to describe the shift in Chomsky's position over the last ten years in lucid and straightforward fashion, identifying the striking new properties of this framework and making the collection generally more accessible to a wider audience. Contents:Introduction; On Binding, Noam Chomsky; Finiteness and Boundedness in Turkish, Lelan George and Jaklin Kornfilt; Nominative Marking in Italian Infinitives and the Nominative Island Constraint, Luigi Rizzi; Empty Subjects, Case and Agreement and the Grammar of Dutch, Eric J.
