Book Synopsis Changing Patrons: Social Identity and the Visual Arts in Renaissance Florence by :
Download or read book Changing Patrons: Social Identity and the Visual Arts in Renaissance Florence written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To whom should we ascribe the great flowering of the arts in Renaissance Italy? Artists like Botticelli and Michelangelo? Or wealthy, discerning patrons like Cosimo de' Medici? In recent years, scholars have attributed great importance to the role played by patrons, arguing that some should even be regarded as artists in their own right. This approach receives sharp challenge in Jill Burke's Changing Patrons, a book that draws heavily upon the author's discoveries in Florentine archives, tracing the many profound transformations in patrons' relations to the visual world of fifteenth-century Florence. Looking closely at two of the city's upwardly mobile families, Burke demonstrates that they approached the visual arts from within a grid of social, political, and religious concerns. Art for them often served as a mediator of social difference and a potent means of signifying status and identity. Changing Patrons combines visual analysis with history and anthropology to propose new interpretations of the art created by, among others, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi, and Raphael. Genuinely interdisciplinary, the book also casts light on broad issues of identity, power relations, and the visual arts in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance.

Book Synopsis Crash Course in Basic Cataloging with RDA by : Heather Lea Moulaison
Download or read book Crash Course in Basic Cataloging with RDA written by Heather Lea Moulaison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering tools, terminology, and the FRBR-based RDA approach to description, this book explains the current principles of organization of information and basic cataloging practices for non-catalogers, enabling readers to understand elements of the cataloging process and interact with records in a basic manner. Organization of information and cataloging is often the most daunting task for library technicians and non-catalogers working in the library. New RDA cataloging rules can be baffling for even the more seasoned catalogers. Written by two authors with 20 years' combined experience in cataloging instruction, Crash Course in Basic Cataloging with RDA approaches current principles of organization of information and cataloging practices from a basic standpoint for non-catalogers. It makes a complex topic easy to understand and a complicated practice doable for those without the proper training and necessary experience. The book gives readers a basic understanding of organization of information and cataloging practice, explaining how records are created and the approaches to different formats of information in libraries, including MARC records and encoding RDA cataloging records; offering assistance in applying RDA; identifying the cataloger's tools; and providing non-technical explanations for the tasks that today's catalogers do. It contains an introduction, a bibliography/webliography, and three appendices of additional resources (Cataloging Tools, Resources for Catalogers, and Sample Catalog Records).
Book Synopsis Politics and Policies in Upper Guinea Coast Societies by : Christian K. Højbjerg
Download or read book Politics and Policies in Upper Guinea Coast Societies written by Christian K. Højbjerg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the radical changes in social and political landscape of the Upper Guinea Coast region over the past 30 years as a result of civil wars, post-war interventions by international, humanitarian agencies and peacekeeping missions, as well as a regional public health crisis (Ebola epidemic). The emphasis on ‘crises’ in this book draws attention to the intense socio-transformations in the region over the last three decades. Contemporary crises and changes in the region provoke a challenge to accepted ways of understanding and imagining socio-political life in the region – whether at the level of subnational and national communities, or international and regional structures of interest, such as refugees, weapon trafficking, cross-border military incursions, regional security, and transnational epidemics. This book explores and transcends the central explanatory tropes that have oriented research on the region and re-evaluates them in the light of the contemporary structural dynamics of crises, changes and continuities.

Book Synopsis Corruptive Patterns of Patronage in South East Europe by : Plamen K. Georgiev
Download or read book Corruptive Patterns of Patronage in South East Europe written by Plamen K. Georgiev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the author’s response to the initial wave of democracy euphoria in South-East Europe, and the obvious regress of it after the “last catch” accession of Bulgaria and Romania (2007) into the European Union family. A core deficit in this respect is the lack of sustainable patronage, relevant to modern societal existence. 1 The bitter fruits of some “dilemma of simultaneity” (Elster 1990), which might have failed to precisely predict the impossibility of transformation in Eastern - rope, has hit the target, as related to the breeds of “impatient capitalisms” that - vour the region. Rising institutional asymmetries, the neglected “rule of law”, the lack of procurement procedures and public control over governmental expenditures as well as illegal schemes of privatisation, tax collecting and the unfair allocation of public funds have shaped mimicries of reforms in crucial spheres of social life. Corruptive patterns of patronages have very much spoiled the outputs of a most p- truded and teasing transition. This undermines significant societal progress. System abuse of civic rights, conflict of interests, nepotisms, political partisanship, int- weaving of institutions with organized criminality threaten to deviate the region from the general aims of democratic existence and modern societal advance.
