Book excerpt: Our nation's greatest assets - our Soldiers - face a dynamic, competitive, and lethal operational environment (OE) that has evolved in recent years, one in which our adversaries will employ a mix of traditional, unconventional, and hybrid strategies. Our Army's physical readiness program must evolve to keep pace with the demands of modern war - our physical fitness test must evolve as well. Based on results of years of scientific study, the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Army have directed replacement of the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). While the legacy APFT is an acceptable test for measuring general fitness, it does not adequately assess the domains of combat physical fitness. The six-event Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) was developed to better predict a Soldier's readiness for the demands of the modern battlefield. Like combat, the ACFT is both age and gender neutral. The desired end-states of ACFT implementation are an increase in physical readiness...

This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This United States Army manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 7-22.01 Holistic Health and Fitness Testing October 2020, comprises the Army's physical testing doctrine and is a companion to the physical readiness domain described in FM 7-22, Holistic Health and Fitness, and ATP 7-22.02, Holistic Health and Fitness Drills and Exercises. This publication establishes physical fitness test administration and evaluation procedures for the Occupational Physical Assessment Test (OPAT), Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), and Combat Water Survival Test (CWST). The OPAT certifies that Army recruits are physically ready to begin initial entry training. The ACFT measures a Soldier's physical ability to execute combat-related tasks. The ACFT validates the Soldier's and unit's physical readiness training; it demonstrates how effectively that training prepares Soldiers for the physical tasks that every Soldier has to be ready to perform. The CWST certifies that Soldiers have the ability to operate in and around water and maritime environments. The principal audience for this doctrine is leaders at all organizational levels. All leaders are trainers. Leaders include officers, warrant officers, noncommissioned officers, and those Department of the Army (DA) Civilians in leadership positions. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication. Commanders, staffs, and subordinates at all levels ensure that holistic health and fitness (H2F) testing is properly administered in accordance with requirements outlined in this publication. This publication prescribes DA Form 705 (Army Combat Fitness Test Scorecard) and DA Form 7888 (Occupational Physical Assessment Test Scorecard). This doctrine and the regulations that support it apply to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated.

Book excerpt: In this monograph, Dr. Whitfield "Chip" East provides a pragmatic history of physical readiness training in our Army. He tells us we initially mirrored the professional Armies of Europe as they prepared their forces for war on the continent. Then he introduces us to some master trainers, and shows us how they initiated an American brand of physical conditioning when our forces were found lacking in the early wars of the last century. Finally, he shows us how we have and must incorporate science (even when there exists considerable debate!) to contribute to what we do-and how we do it-in shaping today's Army. Dr. East provides the history, the analysis, and the pragmatism, and all of it is geared to understanding how our Army has and must train Soldiers for the physical demands of combat.

Book excerpt: "The Drillmaster of Valley Forge-Baron Von Steuben-correctly noted in his "Blue Book" how physical conditioning and health (which he found woefully missing when he joined Washington's camp) would always be directly linked to individual and unit discipline, courage in the fight, and victory on the battlefield. That remains true today. Even an amateur historian, choosing any study on the performance of units in combat, quickly discovers how the levels of conditioning and physical performance of Soldiers is directly proportional to success or failure in the field. In this monograph, Dr. Our culture is becoming increasingly ''unfit," due to poor nutrition, a lack of adequate and formal exercise, and too much technology. Still, the Soldiers who come to our Army from our society will be asked to fight in increasingly complex and demanding conflicts, and they must be prepared through new, unique, and scientifically based techniques. So while Dr. East's monograph is a fascinating history, it is also a required call for all leaders to better understand the science and the art of physical preparation for the battlefield. It was and is important for us to get this area of training right, because getting it right means a better chance for success in combat.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this publication is to review and analyze the history of physical readiness training and assessment in the United States Army. Although the evolution of US Army physical readiness training (PRT) doctrine begins during the pre-Colonial period in America, in order to fully understand this evolutionary process, we must first understand the development of military physical training in Europe and its role in shaping the philosophy and doctrine of US Army PRT. After a short review of the role of physical training in antiquity, we will review in depth the growth of military "gymnastics" in Europe, especially Prussia, during the 19th century and the pathways of this doctrine and training to the United States and the US Army. A full understanding of the foundations of European military gymnastics is crucial to understanding the evolution of PRT in the US Army since European military gymnastics served as the touchstone for US Army PRT for over 200 years. We will then explore the extrinsic and intrinsic forces that have shaped US Army PRT doctrine since 1700 with particular attention to the influences of a changing economic, social, and political milieu and evolution of warfighter tactics and technology. Lastly, we will explore the transformation of US Army physical readiness training and assessment in the 21st Century with the advent of the Holistic Health and Fitness system and the Army Combat Fitness Test"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The pool of available recruits is reduced because of failure to meet body composition standards for entry into the services and a high percentage of individuals exceeding military weight-for-height standards at the time of entry into the service leave the military before completing their term of enlistment. To aid in developing strategies for prevention and remediation of overweight in military personnel, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command requested the Committee on Military Nutrition Research to review the scientific evidence for: factors that influence body weight, optimal components of a weight loss and weight maintenance program, and the role of gender, age, and ethnicity in weight management.
