Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Page | 2 I have been the recipient of a treasure chest of family heirlooms. There are old pictures, poems, genealogies, and stories. Because past generations were so faithful to preserve their family history, I felt compelled to preserve their “footprints.” My favorite heirloom is a metal crest that dates back to the 1200s. The stamp reveals a bird with writing in the Welsh language which, when translated, reads, “Faith in God makes all things right.” I have several unique things that the book contains, such as a contract with the Indians for land and a Civil War diary written by my great-grandfather. There are newspapers dated March of 1863 offering a bounty of $20,000 for the head of Lincoln. Poems were written by my grandmother depicting the emotional trauma she went through during World War II that came from my treasure chest. The stories of my uncles who were in that war one in the South Pacific and the other in Germany. There are stories of the French Huguenots, pioneers, Pilgrims, and Scotch Reformers that were imprisoned for their faith as well as stories of the devastation of the bubonic plague, both in England and in Germany. It also includes a piolet that transported the Apollo 13 astronauts. My linage contains, missionaries, preachers, and a preacher’s wife. Because former generations were faithful to preserve their history, I felt compelled to include their stories in the book, making their footprints indelible.

I was tempted to call the stories Footprints in the Sand, but on reflection I realized that footprints in sand do not last very long whereas the "footprints" I wish to describe are embedded in my mind. I hasten to add, however, that the stories are fictional. I probably have met some people like those in the stories and perhaps at some subconscious level they are real but my stories are a work of fiction. I cannot honestly say where they come from. They seem to pop up out of nowhere.

What follows in the absorbing pages, are a deep trauma and a deeper voyage into a quasi- spiritual world of psychological healing aided by modern medicine. It culminates in a beautiful reconciliation in human relationships. For a first novel it is a commendable write by the author Vinod Babu. Is its "life" as a socially significant, presencing thing at an end? Or might the process of destruction work to enhance its symbolic force, mediating work and presencing power? In this book Andrea Connor traces the ‘afterlife’ of two exemplary examples of monumental destruction and their re-investment with cultural value and symbolic significance. In 1993, during the Bosnian war, the Mostar Bridge was completely destroyed. Reconstructed in 2004, as an exact copy of the original, this "new Old Bridge" has assumed an afterlife as an intentional monument to reconciliation. The World Trade Centre, in New York, has also been transformed since its destruction in 2001, as a place of national mourning and remembrance, a symbolic void marking a singular act of terrorism. Using recent work on affect and object agency Connor considers their contested reconfiguration as sites of collective remembering and forgetting in new highly charged political contexts. She argues for a more expansive notion of reconstruction – encompassing not only the material and symbolic afterlife of both things but also their affecting afterlives as they are re-assembled in the present. Provoking a reconsideration of the way monuments and heritage sites, even in their absence, become powerful agents of historical narrativization, this work will be of interest to students and scholars in a range of fields including international relations, cultural studies, critical heritage studies, and material culture studies.

The author's love for nature is reflected in the poem ""Never Ever Cease to Appreciate"". In the section, ""Touching Tributes"", the author pays homage to women in ""An Ode to Women Power"" and Dr Abdul Kalam in ""A Tribute to a Great Soul"". In her medley of poems, ""Poetic Potpourri"", ""Simplicity"" and ""Your Attitude Defines Who You Are,"" are a must read! Book excerpt: Millions of years in the making, sustaining human voyagers and societies for millennia, a couple of centuries of that by Europeans - the Great Barrier Reef - in maybe five or six decades the largest living structure visible from space will have become the largest dead one. Vicarious Dreaming documents a series of personal voyages between Cooktown and the Torres Strait that are interwoven with accounts of exploration, exploitation and escape. The travels and tales coalesce around the works of Ion Idriess and the lives of solitary men at the edge of the world, drawn to the wild by folly and obsession, and to an island in the Howick Group that Idriess knew well and which was the site of his first book - Madman's Island. And as with the slow-motion ecological catastrophe that is the Reef's agonal decline there are players - and bystanders; stories of people and places, of life and death, of arrivals and departures, and of journeys that involve even the most remote, uninhabited spaces - the necklace of islands scattered along more than two thousand kilometres of Queensland's Coral Sea coast. At once a journey into the far north of Australia and into the furthest depths of the human mind. A tale of Cape York's past and a new chapter in the exploration of its present. A dream narrative - maybe; a case study - perhaps; literary art, yes, absolutely, in its purest and most ambitious form. - Nicholas Rothwell

Book excerpt: In this book, I try to explore why one section of the Catholic Community connected with the late Archbishop Chakaipa was overtaken by great remorse when he died, while another went into jubilation. This leads me into the examination of what kind of person Archbishop Chakaipa was. I do this in the context of his family background and his priestly and Episcopal ministries. He was of the Unendoro clan, with a history tracing back to Karanga roots. In his Seminary years, he wrote five Shona novels which became very influential in developing Shona literacy. He earned enduring respect across the entire Zimbabwean nation for this achievement. Within Church circles Archbishop Chakaipas name is synonymous with the policy of self-reliance, which was his signal achievement in the Archdiocese of Harare. He was determined to see the development of indigenous Zimbabwean writers, frustrated that the world of ideas in Zimbabwe was dominated by Eurogenic (of European origin) missionaries. In his view such Eurogenic intellectual domination undermined Zimbabwean and African independence. In the book, I argue that while Archbishop Chakaipa was a hero, indeed one deserving of canonisation as a Catholic saint, true respect for him should also acknowledge his negative qualities.

Book excerpt: "Designing successfully for people in the world's coldest climates demands a broad understanding of site conditions and their unique social context. Until now such knowledge often lay unarticulated in the minds of a few experienced practitioners or in the disappearing traditions of aboriginal peoples. Bare Poles is a guide for the future. A lively text, informed by more than 150 drawings, photographs, tables, and maps, it sets out the information and questions designers must keep in mind when building in high latitudes and remote communities. A key reference for architects, engineers, planners, builders, hamlet managers or building program administrators in the Canadian North - and a one-stop briefing for newcomers - Bare Poles is equally relevant to other polar regions and to cold climate zones at midlatitudes."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
