Book excerpt: (from Afterword) 'My interest in this, what can I call him, this Australian psycho, came about because of my efforts at writing and publishing accounts of the cases of the famous Queensland detective, Doctor Watson Holmes Jackamara. Unfortunately my interest in the case from the position of my subject palled, for as Jackamara said: ‘This bloke left a trail that you could follow in a four wheel driver.’ Because of this, I was about to conclude that there was little interest in writing the case up, but when I had my first interview with Dr. Jefferson Davis. I instantly saw that this was where the interest lay. Dr. Jeff Davis at that first interview expressed interest in being the subject of a book. To some extent I agreed with him and continued the interviews. When he was not under the complete control of his medication or his delusions, he was quite, well, charming. I also found a fascination in delving into the perverted mind of this serial killer, a unique but brutal man who, thankfully, for the good of the world, remains incarcerated in a hospital for the criminally insane hopefully for the rest of his life. In my judgment, formed over a hundred and ten interviews, he is too great a danger, to society and to women in general, to be ever released. I found him utterly incorrigible, a psychotic who not only believed his fantasies to be real, but used them to initiate a series of murders which he labeled as acts of vengeance. His deeds shocked Queensland at the time and the Courier Mail headlined it as AN INDECENT OBSESSION.' - Mudrooroo An Indecent Obsession is a new novel from the author of Wild Cat Falling.

Book Synopsis Psychoanalysis and ... by : Richard Feldstein
Download or read book Psychoanalysis and ... written by Richard Feldstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990, Psychoanalysis and... brings together essays by critics whose work demonstrates the lively interpenetration of psychoanalysis and other disciplines. Andrew Ross investigates psychoanalysis and Marxist thought; Joel Fineman reads the "sound of O" in Othello; Jane Gallop asks "Why does Freud giggle when the women leave the room?"; and Ellie Ragland-Sullivan examines Lacan’s seminars on James Joyce. This stimulating collection of work should still be required reading, especially for students of literature. But Psychoanalysis and... demonstrates that psychoanalysis – and theoretical criticism, and feminism, and Lacanian theory, and semiotics, and Marxism, and deconstruction, and literary criticism – was, at the time, a rich and expanding terrain.
Book Synopsis The Most Sublime Hysteric by : Slavoj Zizek
Download or read book The Most Sublime Hysteric written by Slavoj Zizek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we know about Hegel? What do we know about Marx? What do we know about democracy and totalitarianism? Communism and psychoanalysis? What do we know that isn't a platitude that we've heard a thousand times - or a self-satisfied certainty? Through his brilliant reading of Hegel, Slavoj Zizek - one of the most provocative and widely-read thinkers of our time - upends our traditional understanding, dynamites every cliché and undermines every conviction in order to clear the ground for new ways of answering these questions. When Lacan described Hegel as the ‘most sublime hysteric’, he was referring to the way that the hysteric asks questions because he experiences his own desire as if it were the Other's desire. In the dialectical process, the question asked of the Other is resolved through a reflexive turn in which the question begins to function as its own answer. We had made Hegel into the theorist of abstraction and reaction, but by reading Hegel with Lacan, Zizek unveils a Hegel of the concrete and of revolution - his own, and the one to come. This early and dazzlingly original work by Zizek offers a unique insight into the ideas which have since become hallmarks of his mature thought. It will be of great interest to anyone interested in critical theory, philosophy and contemporary social thought.

Yes, it's the female midlife crisis for the generation who were meant to be superwomen, able to run a global empire, raise a family, help a crippled dog give birth and do the ironing while having multiple orgasms! With warmth, wisdom and wicked wit, Gretel seeks advice from old friends ('life sucks and then you die'), new friends ('life is a life-changing experience') and family ('maybe you should rent out your big bum as a kind of mobile advertising space'), taking us on a hilarious yet poignant ride as she stands on top of the hill that she's not only climbed but has also built, looks at the view and wonders, ''Is this all there is?''
