Excerpt: ...to take the place of the Germans were the Italians and the Russians, each having achieved primacy in 4 cities, although Italy led in but 1 and Russia in but 2 in 1910. Poland, a country which may have been represented by Austrians, Russians, or Germans in the 1910 list, led in three cities and was second in three others in 1920. This analysis has made it clear that there was in progress during the decade 1910 to 1920 a continued and increasing decline of the German and Irish races in urban leadership and a marked increase in the number of Italians, Russians, and Poles. In practically every large city the Irish born and German born, so long dominant, are yielding to the foreign born of southern Europe and depending in part for their influence in the community upon those modifications of national temperaments and beliefs which appear in the partially Americanized natives of German and Irish parentage. The new immigration restrictions will tend to alter conditions, and it remains for the next census to point out the part which these foreign nationalities are to play in the United States. XI. NEGRO POPULATION. The original centers of Negro population within the United States, as determined by the First Census in 1790, were the states of Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas. These four states returned, at that time, nearly 87 per cent of the total number. They were employed almost exclusively in the cultivation of tobacco and as household servants. With the development and expansion of cotton growing in the South and Southwest, and with the embargo of 1808 against the importation of slaves, it was found advantageous to increase the labor resources of the lower South in connection with the increasing cultivation of cotton. From a study of the...
Book Synopsis Lucean Arthur Headen by : Jill D. Snider
Download or read book Lucean Arthur Headen written by Jill D. Snider and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Carthage, North Carolina, Lucean Arthur Headen (1879–1957) grew up amid former slave artisans. Inspired by his grandfather, a wheelwright, and great-uncle, a toolmaker, he dreamed as a child of becoming an inventor. His ambitions suffered the menace of Jim Crow and the reality of a new inventive landscape in which investment was shifting from lone inventors to the new "industrial scientists." But determined and ambitious, Headen left the South, and after toiling for a decade as a Pullman porter, risked everything to pursue his dream. He eventually earned eleven patents, most for innovative engine designs and anti-icing methods for aircraft. An equally capable entrepreneur and sportsman, Headen learned to fly in 1911, manufactured his own "Pace Setter" and "Headen Special" cars in the early 1920s, and founded the first national black auto racing association in 1924, all establishing him as an important authority on transportation technologies among African Americans. Emigrating to England in 1931, Headen also proved a successful manufacturer, operating engineering firms in Surrey that distributed his motor and other products worldwide for twenty-five years. Though Headen left few personal records, Jill D. Snider recreates the life of this extraordinary man through historical detective work in newspapers, business and trade publications, genealogical databases, and scholarly works. Mapping the social networks his family built within the Presbyterian church and other organizations (networks on which Headen often relied), she also reveals the legacy of Carthage's, and the South's, black artisans. Their story shows us that, despite our worship of personal triumph, success is often a communal as well as an individual achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel Laureate Simon Kuznets, famous as the founder of modern empirical economics, pioneered the quantitative study of the economic history of the Jews. Yet, until now, his most important work on the subject was unpublished. This second collection of previously unavailable material issued by Transaction brings to the public, for the first time, the most important economic work written on Jewish migration since that of Werner Sombart a century ago. This volume of Kuznets' work includes three main essays. The first, titled "Immigration and the Foreign Born," was Kuznets' first work on immigration and discusses the impact of the general foreign born on the U.S. Kuznets and his co-author, Ernest Rubin, offer the essay as a quantitative antidote to the misinformation that led many Jews to support the restrictions ending Jewish migration in the 1920s. The second, "Israel's Economic Development," discusses the impact of mass immigration and other factors on Israeli productivity, providing in English for the first time one of the first detailed studies of the economic development of the state of Israel. The final essay, on "Immigration of Russian Jews to the United States," is the most famous of Kuznets' writings and provides a clear view, backed by a seminal paper that launched the contemporary social scientific study of Jewry. It discusses the details of the labor force, skills, and general structure of Eastern European Jewish immigrants to the U.S.
