Book Synopsis Static Compensators (STATCOMs) in Power Systems by : Farhad Shahnia
Download or read book Static Compensators (STATCOMs) in Power Systems written by Farhad Shahnia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A static compensator (STATCOM), also known as static synchronous compensator, is a member of the flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices. It is a power-electronics based regulating device which is composed of a voltage source converter (VSC) and is shunt-connected to alternating current electricity transmission and distribution networks. The voltage source is created from a DC capacitor and the STATCOM can exchange reactive power with the network. It can also supply some active power to the network, if a DC source of power is connected across the capacitor. A STATCOM is usually installed in the electric networks with poor power factor or poor voltage regulation to improve these problems. In addition, it is used to improve the voltage stability of a network. This book covers STATCOMs from different aspects. Different converter topologies, output filters and modulation techniques utilized within STATCOMs are reviewed. Mathematical modeling of STATCOM is presented in detail and different STATCOM control strategies and algorithms are discussed. Modified load flow calculations for a power system in the presence of STATCOMs are presented. Several applications of STATCOMs in transmission and distribution networks are discussed in different examples and optimization techniques for defining the optimal location and ratings of the STATCOMs in power systems are reviewed. Finally, the performance of the network protection scheme in the presence of STATCOMs is described. This book will be an excellent resource for postgraduate students and researchers interested in grasping the knowledge on STATCOMs.
Book Synopsis Power System Dynamics and Stability by : Peter W. Sauer
Download or read book Power System Dynamics and Stability written by Peter W. Sauer and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a one-semester senior or beginning graduate level course in power system dynamics. This text begins with the fundamental laws for basic devices and systems in a mathematical modeling context. It includes systematic derivations of standard synchronous machine models with their fundamental controls. These individual models are interconnected for system analysis and simulation. Singular perturbation is used to derive and explain reduced-order models.

Download or read book Transient Stability of Power Systems written by Mania Pavella and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market liberalization is expected to affect drastically the operation of power systems, which under economical pressure and increasing amount of transactions are being operated much closer to their limits than previously. These changes put the system operators faced with rather different and much more problematic scenarios than in the past. They have now to calculate available transfer capabilities and manage congestion problems in a near on line environment, while operating the transmission system under extremely stressed conditions. This requires highly reliable and efficient software aids, which today are non-existent, or not yet in use. One of the most problematic issues, very much needed but not yet en countered today, is on-line dynamic security assessment and control, enabling the power system to withstand unexpected contingencies without experienc ing voltage or transient instabilities. This monograph is devoted to a unified approach to transient stability assessment and control, called SIngle Machine Equivalent (S1ME).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Today's electric power systems are continually increasing in complexity due to interconnection growth, the use of new technologies, and financial and regulatory constraints. Sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute, this expert engineering guide helps you deal effectively with stability and control problems resulting from these major changes in the industry. Power System Stability and Control contains the hands-on information you need to understand, model, analyze, and solve problems using the latest technical tools. You'll learn about the structure of modern power systems, the different levels of control, and the nature of stability problems you face in your day-to-day work. The book features a complete account of equipment characteristics and modeling techniques. Included is detailed coverage of generators, excitation systems, prime movers, ac and dc transmission, and system loads - plus principles of active and reactive power control, and models for control equipment. Different categories of power system stability are thoroughly covered with descriptions of numerous methods of analysis and control measures for mitigating the full spectrum of stability problems. This comprehensive source book is written from a pragmatic point of view, but without undue compromise in mathematical rigor. Filled with illustrative examples, it give the necessary basic theory and insight into practical aspects"--Back cover.
Book Synopsis Analysis and Damping Control of Power System Low-frequency Oscillations by : Haifeng Wang

This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the research and development results on power systems oscillations in three categories of analytical methods. First is damping torque analysis which was proposed in 1960’s, further developed between 1980-1990, and widely used in industry. Second is modal analysis which developed between the 1980’s and 1990’s as the most powerful method. Finally the linearized equal-area criterion analysis that is proposed and developed recently. The book covers three main types of controllers: Power System Stabilizer (PSS), FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) stabilizer, and ESS (Energy Storage Systems) stabilizer. The book provides a systematic and detailed introduction on the subject as the reference for industry applications and academic research.
