Book excerpt: The design of pump and treat systems for groundwater remediation is often aided by numerical groundwater modelling. Model predictions are uncertain, with this uncertainty resulting from unknown parameter values, model structure and future system forcings. Researchers have begun to suggest that uncertainty in groundwater model predictions is largely dominated by structural/conceptual model uncertainty and that multiple conceptual models be developed in order to characterize this uncertainty. As regulatory bodies begin to endorse the more expensive multiple conceptual model approach, it is useful to assess whether a multiple model approach provides a signi cant improvement over a conventional single model approach for pump and treat system design, supplemented with a factor of safety. To investigate this question, a case study located in Tacoma, Washington which was provided by Conestoga-Rovers & Associates (CRA) was used. Twelve conceptual models were developed to represent conceptual model uncertainty at the Tacoma, Washington site and a pump and treat system was optimally designed for each conceptual model. Each design was tested across all 12 conceptual models with no factor of safety applied, and a factor of safety of 1.5 and 2 applied. Adding a factor of safety of 1.5 decreased the risk of containment failure to 15 percent, compared to 21 percent with no factor of safety. Increasing the factor of safety from 1.5 to 2 further reduced the risk of containment failure to 9 percent, indicating that the application of a factor of safety reduces the risk of design failure at a cost directly proportional to the value of the factor of safety. To provide a relatively independent estimate of a factor of safety approach a single "best" model developed by CRA was compared against the multiple model approach. With a factor of safety of 1.5 or greater, adequate capture was demonstrated across all 12 conceptual models. This demonstrated that in this case using the single \best" model developed by CRA with a factor of safety would have been a reasonable surrogate for a multiple model approach. This is of practical importance to engineers as it demonstrates that the a conventional single model approach may be su cient. However, it is essential that the model used is a good model. Furthermore, a multiple model approach will likely be an excessive burden in cases such as pump and treat system design, where the cost of failure is low as the system can be adjusted during operation to respond to new data. This may not be the case for remedial systems with high capital costs such as permeable reactive barriers, which cannot be easily adjusted.

The resulting systems will operate under both gradient and concentration constraints. The design is a least cost design. The element of risk in the remediation design considered in this work is that due to the uncertainty in the hydraulic conductivity of the contaminated aquifer in question. Considerable work has been done in the field of optimal groundwater remediation and management design. Existent design algorithms depend upon the reliability of the groundwater flow and transport models to predict the movement of contamination in a given aquifer. The reliability of these mathematical models is, in turn, dependent upon variables that describe the physical attributes of the aquifer in question. The hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer is the most influential of the state variables that are used to de scribe groundwater flow and transport. Many models assume the hydraulic conductivity is known with certainty. However, field data shows that the hydraulic conductivity is uncertain An immediate goal of this research is to successfully apply a new method of optimization to incorporate uncertainty in hydraulic conductivity into the groundwater remediation design subject to gradient and concentration constraints. In doing this, a new method of sampling uncertainty distributions has been formulated and successfully implemented. A new method of solving nonconvex optimization problems has also been successfully developed and applied. This method, called the tunneling method, is an efficient technique for solving optimization problems where multiple interior local minimum values exist in the feasible region (3). The results of this work provide a tool to create cost-effective design-risk-based groundwater-management systems.

Book excerpt: Solving groundwater problems involves a system of methods in characterization and optimization. However, no matter how theoretically sound a method may be, when it is applied in the field, uncertainty is always an important factor that cannot be neglected. Indeed, a good theory or method has to be validated in field applications, and uncertainty propagates from one stage (e.g. characterization) of the application to the next (e.g. remediation optimization). Thus, it is essential for such methods not only to include uncertainty but also to quantify uncertainty in a practical sense. This dissertation covers three important topics in groundwater remediation: site characterization, remediation optimization, and value of information. First, groundwater contamination site characterization with Monte Carlo methods, specifically, Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, is introduced. Then, another subsurface characterization method, stochastic inverse modeling, is covered with an emphasis on solving large-scale characterization problems, meaning resolving the subsurface heterogeneity with a high-resolution. Both methods provide estimation of the site and uncertainty about the estimation. When these characterization results are used for site management such as remediation management, effects of uncertainty on optimization need to be quantified under the specific context of the remediation problem, and traditional measures of uncertainty such as variance and correlation coefficients cannot handle this job well because they do not necessarily depict the severity of uncertainty. In this dissertation, value of information (VOI), defined as the expected cost with the present state of uncertainty minus the expected cost if uncertainty were fully or partially removed, is proposed as a context-specific measure of uncertainty, i.e., it is dependent on site conditions and remediation strategies as well as specific remediation objectives and unit costs. Several laboratory and numerical applications on hydraulic tomography and DNAPL contamination remediation are included in this dissertation to show the efficacy of the methods proposed.
