Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi's 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

Book excerpt: Frontiers of Fluid Mechanics documents the proceedings of the Beijing International Conference on Fluid Mechanics, held in Beijing, People's Republic of China, 1-4 July 1987. The aims of the conference were to provide a forum for a cross-sectional review of the state-of-the-art and new advances in various branches of fluid mechanics, and to promote the exchange of ideas by experts from different parts of the world. The contributions made by researchers at the conference are organized into 18 parts. Part 1 presents invited lectures covering topics such as separated flow, porous flow, and turbulence modeling. Part 2 contains papers dealing with turbulence. Parts 3, 4, and 5 include studies on flow stability and transition, transonic flow, and boundary layer flows and shock waves, respectively. Part 6 is devoted to aerodynamics and gas dynamics. Part 7 examines water waves while Part 8 is devoted to hydrodynamics and hydraulics. The papers in Part 9 examine bubbles and drops. Part 10 deals with experiments involving vortices, jets, wakes, and cavities. Part 11 contains studies on geophysical and astrophysical fluid mechanics. Parts 12 and 13 investigate two-phase flow and flow through porous media, and non-Newtonian flow, respectively. Part 14 takes up magneto-hydrodynamics and physic-chemical flow. Part 15 covers biofluid mechanics. Part 16 contains papers on industrial and environmental fluid mechanics while Part 17 deals with heat transfer. Part 18 contains papers that were received after the conference.

Book excerpt: "With the appearance and fast evolution of high performance materials, mechanical, chemical and process engineers cannot perform effectively without fluid processing knowledge. The purpose of this book is to explore the systematic application of basic engineering principles to fluid flows that may occur in fluid processing and related activities. In Viscous Fluid Flow, the authors develop and rationalize the mathematics behind the study of fluid mechanics and examine the flows of Newtonian fluids. Although the material deals with Newtonian fluids, the concepts can be easily generalized to non-Newtonian fluid mechanics. The book contains many examples. Each chapter is accompanied by problems where the chapter theory can be applied to produce characteristic results. Fluid mechanics is a fundamental and essential element of advanced research, even for those working in different areas, because the principles, the equations, the analytical, computational and experimental means, and the purpose are common.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the topics in inviscid fluid dynamics are not only vitally important mechanisms in everyday life but they are also readily observable without any need for instrumentation. It is therefore stimulating when the mathematics that emerges when these phenomena are modelled is novel and suggestive of alternative methodologies. This book provides senior undergraduates who are already familiar with inviscid fluid dynamics with some of the basic facts about the modelling and analysis of viscous flows. It clearly presents the salient physical ideas and the mathematical ramifications with exercises designed to be an integral part of the text. By showing the basic theoretical framework which has developed as a result of the study of viscous flows, the book should be ideal reading for students of applied mathematics who should then be able to delve further into the subject and be well placed to exploit mathematical ideas throughout the whole of applied science.
