Using a questionnaire we investigate whether subjective inequality rankings correspond to the principle of scale-independence of translation-independence, or to some generalised concept of independence which incorporates the other two principles as special cases. Book excerpt: The combination of stagnant growth and high levels of income inequality renewed the debate about whether a more even distribution of income can spur economic activity. This paper tests for cross-country convergence in income inequality and estimates its impact on economic growth with a heterogeneous panel structural vector autoregression model, which addresses some empirical challenges plaguing the literature. We find that income inequality is converging across countries, and that its impact on economic growth is heterogeneous. In particular, while the median response of real per capita GDP growth to shocks in income inequality is negative and significant, the dispersion around the estimates is large, with at least one fourth of the countries in the sample presenting a positive effect. The results suggest that the negative effect is mainly driven by the Middle East and Central Asia and the Western Hemisphere across regions, and emerging markets across income levels. Finally, we find evidence that improved institutional frameworks can reduce the negative effect of income inequality on growth.

Book excerpt: Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote in the Preface to his famous Discourse on Inequality that “I consider the subject of the following discourse as one of the most interesting questions philosophy can propose, and unhappily for us, one of the most thorny that philosophers can have to solve. For how shall we know the source of inequality between men, if we do not begin by knowing mankind?” (Rousseau, 1754). This citation of Rousseau appears in an article in Spanish where Dagum (2001), in the memory of whom this book is published, also cites Socrates who said that the only useful knowledge is that which makes us better and Seneca who wrote that knowing what a straight line is, is not important if we do not know what rectitude is. These references are indeed a good illustration of Dagum’s vast knowledge, which was clearly not limited to the ?eld of Economics. For Camilo the ?rst part of Rousseau’s citation certainly justi?ed his interest in the ?eld of inequality which was at the centre of his scienti?c preoccupations. It should however be stressed that for Camilo the second part of the citation represented a “solid argument in favor of giving macroeconomic foundations to microeconomic behavior” (Dagum, 2001). More precisely, “individualism and methodological holism complete each other in contributing to the explanation of individual and social behavior” (Dagum, 2001).

We have both been interested in income inequality measurement for a considerably longer period of time. One author (Ryu) has a back ground in physics. While he was working on his Ph. D. in Physics at M. I. T. he became acquainted with Robert Solow. Professor Solow introduced Ryu to economics. After finishing his Ph. D. in physics, Ryu went on to the Uni versity of Chicago where Arnold Zellner guided him to a dissertation on using orthonormal basis and maximum entropy as estimation methods in econometric applications. The precise definition and examples of orthonormal basis (ONB) and maximum entropy (ME) methods will be given in the book. As it turns out, a natural application of these methods is the study of income distribution. Professor Zellner suggested that Ryu look at some of my joint work with Robert Basmann on functional forms of Lorenz curves as one starting place to do his own research. Ryu requested some of our data and asked for several of our papers with the express pur pose of introducing functional forms of Lorenz curves that Ryu felt would do a better job of approximating the empirical Lorenz curve. Thus, our first introduction was essentially one of Ryu trying to invent a better mousetrap. The interested reader can review the results given in Basmann et al. (1990) and Chapter Four of this book to see if Ryu succeeded.
