Book excerpt: We report on a measurement of small angle muon production (2.4[vert-bar][ital y][sup[mu]][vert-bar]3.2) in[ital p][ital[anti p]] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV with the D[null] detector at Fermilab. We have determined the fraction of the inclusive[mu] cross section in this region due to[ital b]-quark production and decay. Combining this measurement with our previously measured cross section in the central region, we calculate[ital d][sigma]/[ital dy] for muons from[ital b] decay with[ital p][sup[mu]][sub T] 5 GeV/c and[ital p][sup[mu]][sub T] 8 GeV/c. These measurements are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations.

Book excerpt: The authors report the latest results on the measurement of inclusive b quark and heavy quarkonium production by the DO collaboration in p{anti p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are from analyses of the 1992--93 data. This report includes measurements of inclusive b quark, J/[psi] and [Upsilon] meson production cross sections. The b quark production cross section, measured in inclusive muon data, is consistent with next to leading order QCD predictions within theoretical and experimental errors. They study J/[psi] and [Upsilon] meson production in dimuon events and perform an investigation of the J/[psi] production mechanisms. Including the latest developments in charmonium phenomenology, the J/[psi] production rates are now almost all accounted for in the transverse momentum range above 8 GeV/c. The observed [Upsilon] production rates, however, are higher than expected by a factor five.

The dataset, corresponding to 85 inverse nanobarns, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC using a low-threshold single-muon trigger. Events are selected by the presence of a muon with transverse momentum greater than 6 GeV with respect to the beam direction and pseudorapidity less than 2.1. The transverse momentum of the muon with respect to the closest jet discriminates events containing b hadrons from background. The inclusive b-hadron production cross section is presented as a function of muon transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The measured total cross section in the kinematic acceptance is sigma(pp to b+X to mu + X') =1.32 +/- 0.01 (stat) +/- 0.30 (syst) +/- 0.15 (lumi) microbarns.

Book excerpt: The inclusive cross section for top quark pair production is measured in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to 5.0 and 19.7 fb-1, respectively, with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The cross sections are measured in the electron-muon channel using a binned likelihood fit to multi-differential final state distributions related to identified b quark jets and other jets in the event. The measured cross section values are 173.6 ± 2.1 (stat)+4.5-4.0 (syst) ± 3.8 (lumi) pb at √s = 7 TeV, and 244.9 ± 1.4 (stat)+6.3-5.5 (syst) ± 6.4 (lumi) pb at √s = 8 TeV, in good agreement with QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy. The ratio of the cross sections measured at 7 and 8 TeV is determined, as well as cross sections in the fiducial regions defined by the acceptance requirements on the two charged leptons in the final state. The cross section results are used to determine the top quark pole mass via the dependence of the theoretically predicted cross section on the mass, giving a best result of 173.8+1.7-1.8 GeV. Furthermore, the data at √s = 8 TeV are also used to set limits, for two neutralino mass values, on the pair production of supersymmetric top squarks with masses close to the top quark mass.
