The project is all about challenges facing the implementation of inclusive education policy in Rarieda sub-county in Siaya Kenya. The Kenyan government has been formulating very good policies on inclusive education but their implementation has not been forth coming. The purpose of this work was therefore to determine some possible factors that hinders the implementation of such policies and what can be done to respond to such challenges. The key respondents were head teachers of public primary schools who I believed were in a better position to understand such challenges. the main data collection instruments was interviews and the approach was purely qualitative. Results indicated that stigmatization and attitude, lack of training to key stakeholders, lack of enough resources, curriculum and policy issues are some of the challenges facing the implementation of inclusive education policy.

Bringing a critical perspective to inclusive schooling and education is imperative. This book adds to current educational debates with an African lens. It engages inclusive education from multiple lenses of curriculum content, classroom pedagogy and instruction, representation, culture, environment and the socio-organization life of schools, the pursuit of equity and social justice and the search for educational relevance. It is opined that Africa cannot be left behind in rethinking educational inclusion in ways that evoke critical questions of power, equity and social difference. The question of leaner’s identity in terms of class, gender, sexuality, (dis)ability, language, ethnicity and race are equally consequential for African schooling and education. When inclusion is understood as wholeness of education, then how schooling and education engage the complete learner – her/his body, mind, soul and spirit, as well as the use of local community and Indigenous knowledges in teaching and learning become relevant. Inclusion stands the risk of liberal educational agendas that simply tinker or toy with schooling and education and hardly embrace the challenge of educational change. What we need is a fundamental structural change that ensures schooling and education embraces difference while grappling with the teaching of Indigeneity, decolonization and resistance.

Book excerpt: Despite legislative protections that have made education available to all Kenyan students at no cost, students with disabilities who are now legally entitled to attend school remain significantly under enrolled. Some explanations for the lagging enrollment of students with disabilities are negative views of disability by the rural communities in Kenya, principals denying these children admission because their management is demanding and strains the already scarce resources, and the incoherent application of legislations supporting the implementation of programs and services for persons with disabilities. A qualitative ethnographic study design was used to explore the perceptions of religious leaders, chiefs, assistant chiefs, parents of students with disabilities, head teachers, and teachers of students with disabilities. Thirty-four participants were selected using a combination of purposeful and snowball sampling techniques. Data was collected through observations, individual interviews, focus group discussions, and document/artifact collection. Data was analyzed qualitatively. Research quality was established by employing the methods that assure credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Findings indicate that the cultural understanding of disability in Ochwoga village has led to discrimination, and segregation of persons with disabilities in schools, community activities, and social life such as marriage. Conclusions highlight negative attitudes towards disability, the prominence of labels and stigma in Ochwoga Village, challenges in the implementation of an all-inclusive education policy, and disabled persons viewed as having flawed personhoods and bodies. Implications propose creating attitudinal change towards disability, implementation of an all-inclusive education policy, and ensuring a transition of persons with disability to higher education and employment.
