Book excerpt: The authors report the latest results on the measurement of inclusive b quark and heavy quarkonium production by the DO collaboration in p[anti p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are from analyses of the 1992--93 data. This report includes measurements of inclusive b quark, J/[psi] and[Upsilon] meson production cross sections. The b quark production cross section, measured in inclusive muon data, is consistent with next to leading order QCD predictions within theoretical and experimental errors. They study J/[psi] and[Upsilon] meson production in dimuon events and perform an investigation of the J/[psi] production mechanisms. Including the latest developments in charmonium phenomenology, the J/[psi] production rates are now almost all accounted for in the transverse momentum range above 8 GeV/c. The observed[Upsilon] production rates, however, are higher than expected by a factor five.

Book excerpt: We calculate the O([alpha]3s) short-distance, QCD collinear-factorized coefficient functions for all partonic channels that include the production of a heavy quark pair at short distances. Thus, this provides the first power correction to the collinear-factorized inclusive hadronic production of heavy quarkonia at large transverse momentum, pT, including the full leading-order perturbative contributions to the production of heavy quark pairs in all color and spin states employed in NRQCD treatments of this process. We discuss the role of the first power correction in the production rates and the polarizations of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The consistency of QCD collinear factorization and nonrelativistic QCD factorization applied to heavy quarkonium production is also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of the heavy (c{bar c})-quarkonium, (c{bar b})-quarkonium, and (b{bar b})-quarkonium states [({bar Q}') quarkonium for short], via the W semi-inclusive decays, has been systematically studied within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD. In addition to the two color-singlet S-wave states, we also discuss the production of the four color-singlet P-wave states.

This book was released on 2016-07-09 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the study of heavy quarkonium production at high-energy colliders as a useful tool to explain both the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of quantum choromodynamics. It provides the first comprehensive comparison between the theory and recent experiments and clarifies some longstanding puzzles in the heavy quarkonium production mechanism. In addition, it describes in detail a new framework for implementing precise computations of the physical observables in quantum field theories based on recently developed techniques. It can be used to simulate the complicated collider environment of the Large Hadron Collider at the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN). Its accomplishment implies that the Monte Carlo simulations for high-energy physics experiments have reached the limits of precision. It offers readers a wealth of valuable information on the relevant techniques.
Book Synopsis Recent Developments in Heavy Quark and Quarkonium Production by : Thomas Mehen
Download or read book Recent Developments in Heavy Quark and Quarkonium Production written by Thomas Mehen and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent measurements of J/{psi} production in e{sup +}e{sup -} colliders pose a challenge to the NRQCD factorization theorem for quarkonium production. Discrepancies between leading order calculations of color-octet contributions and the momentum distribution of J/{psi} observed by Belle and BaBar are resolved by resumming large perturbative and nonperturbative corrections that are enhanced near the kinematic endpoint. The large cross sections for J/{psi} + c + {bar c} and double quarkonium production remain poorly understood. Nonperturbative effects in fixed-target hadroproduction of open charm are also discussed. Large asymmetries in the production of charm mesons and baryons probe nonperturbative corrections to the QCD factorization theorem. A power correction called heavy-quark recombination can economically explain these asymmetries with a few universal parameters.
Book Synopsis Measurement of Quarkonium Polarization to Probe QCD at the LHC by : Valentin Knünz
Download or read book Measurement of Quarkonium Polarization to Probe QCD at the LHC written by Valentin Knünz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-07 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses in detail the measurement of the polarizations of all S-wave vector quarkonium states in LHC proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector. Heavy quarkonium states constitute an ideal laboratory to study non-perturbative effects of quantum chromodynamics and to understand how quarks bind into hadrons. The experimental results are interpreted through an original phenomenological approach, which leads to a coherent picture of quarkonium production cross sections and polarizations within a simple model, dominated by one single color-octet production mechanism. These findings provide new insights into the dynamics of heavy quarkonium production at the LHC, an important step towards a satisfactory understanding of hadron formation within the standard model of particle physics.

Book Synopsis Heavy Quark Physics by : Aneesh V. Manohar
Download or read book Heavy Quark Physics written by Aneesh V. Manohar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the physics of heavy quarks gives physicists the unique opportunity to test the predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model. Heavy Quark Physics provides an exciting introduction to this new area of high energy physics. Two leading experts in the field review the standard model, the basics of heavy quark spin-flavor symmetry, and detail how it can be applied to the classification of states, decays and fragmentation. The heavy quark effective theory is developed, including the radiative and 1/mQ corrections, and applied to the study of hadron masses, form factors, and inclusive decay rates. The authors also discuss the application of chiral perturbation theory to heavy hadrons. To aid the reader, many of the key calculations are performed step by step, and problems are provided at the end of each chapter. This lucid volume provides graduate students with an ideal introduction to the physics of heavy quarks, and more experienced researchers with an authoritative reference to the subject.
