Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book excerpt: This entry describes the experimental work conducted in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College in connection with Test Problems 1 and 2 of the "Workshop on Hypersonic Flows for Reentry Problems, Part I". These are defined as follows: Test Problem 1 Flow Over a Slender Cone Test Problem 2 Turbulent Base Flow The main requirement of this text is to present the experimental data for direct comparison with the predictions of CFD codes. We have therefore concentrated mainly on a factual statement of measuring techniques and results, together with an assessment of experimental accuracy. Future publications will be devoted to more extensive physical interpretations and discussions of the results. We have produced a large volume of data, some of which were categorised as "MANDATORY" and some as "OPTIONAL" for the purposes of CFD validation. However, only the "MANDATORY" data are presented here, although the other data are available and will be published separately later. 2. EXPERIMENTAL ARRANGEMENT 2. 1 The Test Facility The experiments were conducted in the Imperial College No. 2 Gun tunnel. This facility is a conventional intermittent blowdown tunnel with a contoured Mach 9 (nominal) axisymmetric nozzle fed by a free piston compression heater. The operating condition under which the data contained in this report were obtained is presented in Table 1. Test 2 T (oK) M b. This book was released on 1961 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Separation caused by the pressure rise induced by flares has been experimentally investigated in the Mach number range of 1.5 to 5.0 and in the Reynolds number range (based on boundary-layer thickness) of 1.5X104 to 12X104. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the model geometry and flow conditions for which separation can be expected for a turbulent boundary layer of zero pressure gradient on the cylinder approaching the flare. Comparisons are made of the boundary-layer-separation characteristics of these three-dimensional flares with two-dimensional separation results from a previous investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic research programs are reported with fundamental applications to supersonic flight. The experimental studies made use of the unique capabilities of the high Reynolds number Mach 3 facility. The experimental programs concentrated on phenomena associated with incipient separation and separation of turbulent boundary layers over a large Reynolds number range. The reattachment phenomena of a shear layer was also studied in great depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer has resulted in many significant ad vances of interest to students, engineers, and scientists. Accordingly, a course entitled "Modern Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer" was given at the University of California to present significant recent theoretical and experimental work. The course consisted of seven parts: I-Introduction; II-Hydraulic Analogy for Gas Dynamics; 111- Turbulence and Unsteady Gas Dynamics; IV-Rarefied and Radiation Gas Dynamics; V-Biological Fluid Mechanics; VI-Hypersonic and Plasma Gas Dynamics; and VII-Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Flows. The material, presented by the undersigned as course instructor and by various guest lecturers, could easily be adapted by other universities for use as a text for a one-semester senior or graduate course on the subject. Due to the extensive notes developed during the University of California course, it was decided to publish the material in three volumes, of which the present is the first. The succeeding volumes will be entitled "Selected Topics in Fluid and Bio-Fluid Mechanics" and "Introduction to Steady and Unsteady Gas Dynamics." Finally, I must express a word of appreciation to my wife Irene and to my children, Wellington Jr. and Victoria, who made it possible for me to write and edit this book in the very quiet atmosphere of our home.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of passive and active flow control in fluid dynamics, with an emphasis on utilizing fluid instabilities for enhancing control performance. Examples are given from a wide range of technologically important flow fields occurring in aerospace applications, from low-subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers. This essential book can be used for both research and teaching on the topics of fluid instabilities, fluid measurement and flow actuator techniques, and problem sets are provided at the end of each chapter to reinforce key concepts and further extend readers' understanding of the field. The solutions manual is available as a online resource for instructors. The text is well suited for both graduate students in fluid dynamics and for practising engineers in the aerodynamics design field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Shock Waves contains a comprehensive, structured coverage of research topics related to shock wave phenomena including shock waves in gases, liquids, solids, and space. Shock waves represent an extremely important physical phenomena which appears to be of special practical importance in three major fields: compressible flow (aerodynamics), materials science, and astrophysics. Shock waves comprise a phenomenon that occurs when pressure builds to force a reaction, i.e. sonic boom that occurs when a jet breaks the speed of sound. This Handbook contains experimental, theoretical, and numerical results which never before appeared under one cover; the first handbook of its kind. The Handbook of Shock Waves is intended for researchers and engineers active in shock wave related fields. Additionally, R&D establishments, applied science & research laboratories and scientific and engineering libraries both in universities and government institutions. As well as, undergraduate and graduate students in fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, and physics. Key Features* Ben-Dor is known as one of the founders of the field of shock waves* Covers a broad spectrum of shock wave research topics* Provides a comprehensive description of various shock wave related subjects* First handbook ever to include under one separate cover: experimental, theoretical, and numerical results

This book was released on 1972 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of wall cooling and nose bluntness on laminar and transitional reattaching flows induced by a 9.5-degree ramp were investigated at Mach numbers from 3 through 6 measuring the longitudinal surface pressure and heat-transfer rate distributions, as well as the flow-field pressures, at several longitudinal stations. Reynolds number based on flat-plate length was varied from 0.25 to 1.0 million. The trend in the change in interaction length with Reynolds number increase indicated laminar reattachment at all test Reynolds numbers at M = 6 and transitional at the two higher Reynolds numbers at M = 3.
