Hill: From the Plotting Citizen Confederacies in Worcester County, Mass Mrs. Hill demanded in writing, three different times, to the President and Directors of said railroad organization, for qualified appraisers upon the estate of which she was legally seized, which said surveyed railroad route cut through from north-west to south-east, and the only satisfaction for her prayers was we shall not comply with your request and shall not assess your damage until after all others," &c They evidently determined to locate and build said road in accordance with their own wishes, law or no law, and to suppress at all hazards whoever should dare to vindicate their rights in accordance with the Revised Statutes. Tomboy Tess is the daughter of a drunken handyman, Beany the timid daughter of a runaway slave, and Lucy the ambitious daughter of a wealthy abolitionis. It's no surprise their goals and personalities clash. All three, however, are enamored of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her First Woman's Rights convention, but it's not until Tess rescues Stanton and Amelia Bloomer from town bullies and is rewarded with a job printing Bloomer's temperance and women's rights newspaper that they become friends. When Tess's father delivers Beany's mother to slave catchers, the girls fight to save her. A bloody battle on the towpath leaves two of them broken in body and spirit, adrift on the Rie Canal. Adventurous Tess finally gets her wish: she's leaving home. But at what price? And how will she survive? -- From back cover.

Book excerpt: In May 1989, Dwaine Tinsley stood at the summit of an unlikely career. The product of a broken, trailer-trash marriage, he was a high school dropout who had decided to become a professional cartoonist while serving a six-year sentence in a Maryland prison for burglary. As cartoon editor for Larry Flynt's notorious Hustler magazine, he had assembled a staff of pen-and-Wite-Out-wielding Lenny Bruces whose unprecedentedly offensive socio-sexual cartoons had spearheaded that publication's fight against the forces of censorship and repression that sought to overthrow the political and cultural gains of the 1960s. His primary personal contribution―spawned amidst a national hysteria that saw a plague of child sexual abuse arising everywhere from pre-school staffs to satanic sects―was "Chester the Molester," a hulking middle-aged man who craved pre-pubescent girls. And then Tinsley's teenage daughter accused him of sexually violating her over the course of five years. And the prosecution in his ensuing criminal trial cast several storage boxes full of his cartoons against him. Most Outrageous is the story of the trial of Dwaine Tinsley as well as the story of Tinsley's family life. Bob Levin's writings have established him as one of the most thought-provoking chroniclers of cartoonists today. While focusing upon the work and lives of the most offbeat creators in the field in order to champion the pursuit of individual vision, no matter how unorthodox or inflammatory, he has explored issues common to artists of every medium. Most Outrageous carries his search onto new, unsettling ground.

Book excerpt: The International Criminal Court (ICC) has run into serious problems with its first big case -- the situation in northern Uganda. There is no doubt that appalling crimes have occurred here. Over a million people have been forced to live in overcrowded displacement camps under the control of the Ugandan army. Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army has abducted thousands, many of them children and has systematically tortured, raped, maimed and killed. Nevertheless, the ICC has confronted outright hostility from a wide range of groups, including traditional leaders, representatives of the Christian Churches and non-governmental organizations. Even the Ugandan government, which invited the court to become involved, has been expressing serious reservations. Tim Allen assesses the controversy. While recognizing the difficulties involved, he shows that much of the antipathy towards the ICC's intervention is misplaced. He also draws out important wider implications of what has happened. Criminal justice sets limits to compromise and undermines established procedures of negotiation with perpetrators of violence. Events in Uganda have far reaching implications for other war zones - and not only in Africa. Amnesties and peace talks may never be quite the same again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can early Jewish courtroom narratives tell us about the capacity and limits of human justice? By exploring how judges and the act of judging are depicted in these narratives, Trial Stories in Jewish Antiquity: Counternarratives of Justice challenges the prevailing notion, both then and now, of the ideal impartial judge. As a work of intellectual history, the book also contributes to contemporary debates about the role of legal decision-making in shaping a just society. Chaya T. Halberstam shows that instead of modelling a system in which lofty, inaccessible judges follow objective and rational rules, ancient Jewish trial narratives depict a legal practice dependent upon the individual judge's personal relationships, reactive emotions, and impulse to care. Drawing from affect theory and feminist legal thought, Halberstam offers original readings of some of the most famous trials in ancient Jewish writings alongside minor case stories in Josephus and rabbinic literature. She shows both the consistency of a counter-tradition that sees legal practice as contingent upon relationship and emotion, and the specific ways in which that perspective was manifest in changing times and contexts.
