Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A person endowed with a sense of humor has an inner 'richness' for it often brings incidental smiles on his face. No potion, no beauty aid, no pencils and brushes can embellish a human face as the pleasant mark of an oft- worn smile does. A testy, tetchy, irascible or cantankerous person gets on his face easily discernible, disagreeable telltale clues that give him away even to his casual interlocutor. A person can smile, laugh, cut jokes or find humor only if his mind is somewhat liberated, he is not overly bogged down with every-day-cares, neither is he too self-conscious to be always self-involved. To find humor or even to fully appreciate it, it is imperative to keep some channel of mind 'open' to be ready to catch the subtle strands of others and one's own thoughts and actions. Similar is the case with Harmohan Chhibber who discovers humor where there appears none to a casual eye. Laugh and the world laughs with you. Smile and the world smiles. A smiling face indicates an affinity, a bond, a link and a companionship of the voyage of life on this floating planet. A smiling face is cynosure of all eyes. Friends in office, social circle or wherever they are cluster him or her. One who wears a smile on his face spreads sunshine and reflects a positive attitude. Harmohan Chhibber rightly exhorts his readers; ''you are not dressed for the day unless you wear a smile''. Even a casual perusal of an anecdotal narrative contained in 'incidental smiles' will convince a reader that Harmohan Chhibber can 'smell' or perceive humor instinctively. So hitch you wagon to 'Incidental Smiles' and enjoy its inherent bliss. Smile is an apparel of jovial heart and it can be therapeutic in its effect, it is also spiritual in content, it is mysterious Midas touch, an alchemy that turns every metal into gold. Smile is a 'mantra' for success and bliss. It ensures facial uplift and cheerfulness. Smile is antidote to melancholy. They say 'act young and you feel young' so wear a smile on your face and be happy. A smile can bridge the abyss between tantalizing bless and abject dejection, between friendliness and schizophrenic one-up-man ship. A beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, so dose humor lie in the mind of the humorist. Mark Twain would find humor where none exists for others. When a high dignitary-the next speaker sitting beside him commented rather presumptuously that it appeared he would be talking over the heads of the audience. Twain took the wind out of the dignitary by saying 'feel easy, they don't listen'. in case when in an 'Old boys 'meet in an institution, a dignitary in visitors' book wrote, "I am what I am due to the institution". The person following him scribbled below it, "Why blame the institution?" When a legal luminary was a student, his teacher not being satisfied with his answer in the law class at Mumbai asked him where he had his schooling. On being told that it was at Shimla, the teacher said, "Why go so far to learn so little." It is apparent that in all the above incidents there initially appears to no point of humor but a person endowed with a sense of humor will discover it to the pleasant surprise of his company. Similar is the case with Harmohan Chhibber who discovers humor where there appears none to a causal eye. Prof. P. L. Bhola

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was supposed to be epic. During a late-night poker game, tennis teammates Colin, Ceo, Grahame, and Rhody make a pact to go on a camping trip in Yosemite National Park. And poker vows can't be broken. So the first sign that they should ditch the plan is when Rhody backs out. The next is when Ceo replaces him with Ellie, a girl Grahame and Colin have never even heard of. And then there's the forest fire at their intended campsite. But instead of bailing, they decide to take the treacherous Snow Creek Falls Trail to the top of Yosemite Valley. From there, the bad decisions really pile up. A freak storm is threatening snow, their Craigslist tent is a piece of junk, and Grahame is pretty sure there's a bear on the prowl. On top of that, the guys have some serious baggage (and that's not including the ridiculously heavy ax that Grahame insisted on packing) and Ellie can't figure out what their deal is. And then one of them doesn't make it back to the tent. Desperate to survive while piecing together what happened, the remaining hikers must decide who to trust in this riveting, witty, and truly unforgettable psychological thriller that reveals how one small mistake can have chilling consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From spectacular deaths in a drag musical to competing futures in a call center, Filipino Time examines how contracted service labor performed by Filipinos in the Philippines, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States generates vital affects, multiple networks, and other lifeworlds as much as it disrupts and dislocates human relations. Affective labor and time are re-articulated in a capacious archive of storytelling about the Filipino labor diaspora in fiction, musical performance, ethnography, and documentary film. Exploring these cultural practices, Filipino Time traces other ways of sensing, making sense of, and feeling time with others, by weaving narratives of place and belonging out of the hostile but habitable textures of labortime. Migrant subjects harness time and the imagination in their creative, life making capacities to make communal worlds out of one steeped in the temporalities and logics of capital.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No previous work has thoroughly analyzed nonverbal behavior in Homeric epic. Gesture and posture, conscious and unconscious manipulation of space and time, and involuntary "leakage" such as twitching and shivering can intensify and underline - or contradict and ironize - the speech of characters and hexameter narrative. Lateiner explores how the Homeric poems frequently and consistently employ gesture, posture, and vocalics to convey situation and meaning, sometimes instead of speech or instrumental action, sometimes in addition to those signals of meaning. Sardonic Smile has been written for a broad audience including classicists, cultural historians, anthropologists, semioticians, and students of comparative literature. A general introduction to gesture in life and literature, translated Greek, and a glossary of terms make the volume accessible to student and scholar alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Volatility Smile The Black-Scholes-Merton option model was the greatest innovation of 20th century finance, and remains the most widely applied theory in all of finance. Despite this success, the model is fundamentally at odds with the observed behavior of option markets: a graph of implied volatilities against strike will typically display a curve or skew, which practitioners refer to as the smile, and which the model cannot explain. Option valuation is not a solved problem, and the past forty years have witnessed an abundance of new models that try to reconcile theory with markets. The Volatility Smile presents a unified treatment of the Black-Scholes-Merton model and the more advanced models that have replaced it. It is also a book about the principles of financial valuation and how to apply them. Celebrated author and quant Emanuel Derman and Michael B. Miller explain not just the mathematics but the ideas behind the models. By examining the foundations, the implementation, and the pros and cons of various models, and by carefully exploring their derivations and their assumptions, readers will learn not only how to handle the volatility smile but how to evaluate and build their own financial models. Topics covered include: The principles of valuation Static and dynamic replication The Black-Scholes-Merton model Hedging strategies Transaction costs The behavior of the volatility smile Implied distributions Local volatility models Stochastic volatility models Jump-diffusion models The first half of the book, Chapters 1 through 13, can serve as a standalone textbook for a course on option valuation and the Black-Scholes-Merton model, presenting the principles of financial modeling, several derivations of the model, and a detailed discussion of how it is used in practice. The second half focuses on the behavior of the volatility smile, and, in conjunction with the first half, can be used for as the basis for a more advanced course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a multidisciplinary analysis of the context of quantum physics experiments and the function of the human mind that makes it possible to demonstrate that an object-based model of reality formed at the level of the unconscious is the basis of our worldview. The consciousness experiences a ''time flow'' because of the specific features of perception in the form of a model with a sequential fixation of events. Together with the need to relate objects in terms of the model, this generates a space-time representation of the world around us. Acceptance of a mental character of our construct of reality allows for resolution of the problems in quantum physics and its paradoxes, thereby opening the way to an insight into reality. The presented material is organized in a specific order to facilitate the reader's understanding. First, the fact that if there are no objects in the area of quantum mechanics, then they belong to the corresponding model rather than the reality is proved by case studies of the most discussed and relevant paradoxes of quantum physics. The authors consider a topological variant in constructing an object-based space that describes the physical properties of an object that are the most verified in science and describable with mathematical relations. The functionality of the proposed construct is tested by deriving the ''laws'' of conservation of energy and momentum in a relativistic form. The book is oriented towards experts in physics and psychology, advanced students, and readers interested in state-of-the-art science and the philosophy connected to it.
